  • This song was written for Anne Boleyn by the entertainers in king Henry VIII,s court.

Someone asked who cares? History cares. Henry later had her be-headed for her opinions on religion.

  • @Memnoch67 Not for her opinions on religion but he had put charges of Witchcraft and some other things. I don't remember them but if it will be needed to prove my point, then I will find them.

  • @MatthewJWWilliams sorry my friend I consider witch craft a religion, not that I study it but it is a way of life.

  • @Memnoch67 And thats how we settle an argument in England to this day.

  • Justin Bieber can go fuck himself

    this

this is what music is at heart

  • I'm sick of hearing about who wrote this piece of music, I wrote this song okay, now can we all just shut up sit down and enjoy this beautiful majestic tone.

  • Who cares who wrote and performed it... its Epic.

  • @Riseofshano Thank you very much for the comment ! i agree with you totally !!

  • I need the picture of the ldy at 0.26 on horse. Can you send it plz, plz plz plz plz.

  • @Madmachine73 I'm sure if you googled Lady Godiva you'd find something very similar.

  • so henry wrote this song for a girl and then he cut her head off right?

  • @jffryh I don't think so; if anything, a poet, a bard, a trubadour etc at the court could have composed it for the King. I don't think that any monarch would bother himself with creating such a beautiful poetry and not leaving a credit for himself...

  • @OldWaysFollower aye, although then again it is possible that if he had heard it he would of most likely wanted credit for it anyway... like Pythagoras.. some people think he may not of even existed or may of been a man who took credit for other people's inventions... hmm? who knows...

  • @jffryh No one is sure, Henry spoke several languages and played several intruments... he enjoyed music... It is possible he may of written this song but it is also possible that he may have not... It could of been for any of his six wives, perhaps Anne Boleyn... or their daughter Elizabeth. But not mary.. gosh no, not mary. :D

  • echo of magic dreams, echo of an ancient past........I like it so much

  • I know a somewhat ruder version of this song....not a patch on the original though*

  • this is fantastic, thanks Phaidra69 for the history too, i had no idea that Henry VIII had anything to do with this tune. Fantastic singer too! Again, thanks a lot!

You lady excellently hits those high notes througout the song with lots of energy. The accompanian music beautifully used. The Tudor feeling is brought out when coupled with colourful clips. I enjoy listening and watching so much and want to wholeheartedly applaud.

  • Some french lyrics for "greensleeves" (done by Ghavami s.r.)

Titre: un rêve pure. Music: "greensleeves".

  • Beautiful!

Where did you find the picture at 1:18?

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE

  • check my video for the epic beowulf remix

  • I want to know why there seem to be so many different lyrics to this song. Is it just part of its tradition as a folk piece or what? Is there an 'official' version of the lyrics?

  • omg...... her voice...... omg

  • .. I agree with MEORSO comment below a part for just one detail , this song is Italian in origin and the composer is unknown, it is Italian not only in the style , this song has been imported rapidly in England in all the courts and churches during the medieval period..

  • this song is older than the discovery of America!

  • This song was written by the English King Henry VIII

  • @adamb0000 false it wasnt

  • @Phaidra69Do you know where I could get the picture at 0:43 (with Lancelot giving Guinevere the crown of diamonds)? I know this is an odd request but I swear I've seen him before and I just can't find the picture anywhere! Thanks.

  • @Phaidra69 Do you recall where you got the picture at 00:43 - the one where Lancelot is giving Guinevere the crown of diamonds? I swear I know the guy, or have seen him somewhere - a lot like your last request. Where could I find it? I know this could be construed as an odd request but please consider it serious.

  • Did they have ice cream vans in Tudor England?

  • Speechless.

  • To much over the top.

  • Dont care who wrote it, want this to be played on my funeral. End of..

    Just... Magical.. and im 16.

  • This is the best amazing version when i heard ever!!!

  • i notice all the irish people are desperate for this song to be anything other than English its quite entertaining. god bless

  • @Shropshireladdie On the contrary, I am Irish and I don't wish it to be anything other than what it is. It is most likely English but it has never been historically proven who wrote it. This song was being sung around Italy before Henry VIII was even born and there are writings of this song in many cultures. Don't steryotype the Irish. We put up with a lot of it.

  • @GracelessDementor

Dont steryotype you? How do you think i feel? I get told my people massacred raped and enslaved the whole world and you get steryotyped???? we didnt btw i blame the British......

  • beautiful performance!

  • Dream World reminds me of a game in a Medieval Setting, much like this.

But enough of the game. This- this is what people need to hear! All you hear are people covering this song, but there is yet anything else worthy of this sound. You can feel your heart singing to this song! Magnificent!

  • It´s a beautiful melody...I would like to have the lyrics of this song....I really do not know much about it.....I have heard other lyrics with the same melody in a christmas song (what child is this)....thanks!

  • really like the history lesson you gave in your discription...and the photoes were really beauitful and/or stunning...

  • @nicamarisol Thanks for your kind comment and i am very happy you like this more classical version of the famous " Greensleeves " . The singer is me, Phaidra69, from Greece , who have uploaded the song ! if you are interested in more songs with my voice, visit my channel . In what concerns a CD , unfortunately i haven' t yet made it but it is for sure in my plan for this year . Have a nice listening !

  • @Phaidra69 you are so very talented!! this song touches me and has been with me since childhood and i cry tears of joy each time this wonder touches my ears. thank you, god bless.

  • @maryhirsch1 HA!

  • @maryhirsch1 no such thing of former lifes

  • @maryhirsch1 try to collect a lot of things from the net on Joan d aRc you are a soul of good feelings so keep it like that,Collect a lot,and meditate sing Pays to h soul,

  • @maryhirsch1 Eh, maybe you were and maybe you were not:) Maybe I was a composer of this song whom you, the girl I courted then, have disdained and who later died from grief, how can you be sure? :) Seriously, I do believe in reincarnation but I don't think we should look into the past lives; not in vein we are made to forget them; once the Drink of Forgetfulness is given to the soul, he/she loses all memories to be able to start a new life.

  • @OldWaysFollower I think there is something that is kept through the next lives, though. The character, the desires and favours for the musical tunes for example. Once you attained such a thing, it becomes an unremovable part of your soul and thrives with it, enriching your feelings and mind :)

  • @maryhirsch1 Besides, there *IS* something in this tune that brings about such feelings... You and I are not the only people to feel that way. I think it's quite good for spiritual travels. Greetings from Poland :)

  • this is strong

  • awesome..

  • i love this song.

  • Wunderschön

  • Really nice job! I personally would prefer a smoother transition between the images...

  • @seawords just do it

  • the castle at 0:09 stands in Austria!

  • Musica medieval muito bela.

Amei as imagens da epoca de Henrique VIII.

Dizem que foi ele que compos essa cancao para sua amada.

  • Beautiful video.Loved the images.

  • In your dreams Mosher. But thanks for the offer. We've already been fucked by Gordon Brown so you're too late..

  • Your English is excellent, nice to know you went out your way to type in something English related and attempt at being what you make think is being clever.

England is a country that has a rich history and this song shows it. England shares its history with Britain, unfortunately it does not share it with Ireland.

  • what the hell is your problem?

  • Well im sorry im not an expert about the 1800s it was something i read somewhere idk where and it was just the sleeves i had said not all green. Im only a kid cut some slack please. And whats pophistory anyway? lol ive never heard of tht before.

  • Pophistroy is a portmanteu of "pop" and "history." It refers to a sort of history that is characterized by modern illusions and stories, not unlike urban legends, only in a historical setting.

  • hi people, I from Croatian and I lerned that song iz music class.... and do you now wath? I realy liked that song!

  • I lovelovelove this song <3

  • Greensleeves back then was actually a term or a symbolization for a whore. Not our modern day whores but an ACTUAL one that was a sign that a woman was a prositute and that she could be bought.

  • oh hardly. green was a colour that was linked with sexuality, sure, and later came to be a shorthand for promiscuity. but wearing green did not necessarily equal being a prostitute. stop reading pophistory.

  • Wonderful old song with perfect video!!!

  • increible¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • Greensleeves was originally composed by a commonfolk in England. His name is unknown. He wrote for a woman who was wearing sleeves of the colour green and he had some affection for her. He did not know her name so he called the song "Greensleeves". This song became very popular even in churches. It is a common myth that the song was composed for Anne Bolyen by Henry VIII. This is untrue because the song was composed in an Italian style that reached England after Henry's death (around 1580).

  • Actually, the tune has changed around quite a bit. Not only that, but in one of Shakespeare's plays they mentioned the tune in a rather familiar way.

Now, I am not saying that Henry VIII wrote this song to the Lady Anne Boleyn, what I am saying is that it is possible.

You should say that an English peasant wrote this song when you are not 100% sure.

And no one is 100% sure, because know one knows for sure.

    ^_^

  • @lovesjustlust It is not possible that Henry VIII wrote it. If he did he and his sychophants would make sure we all knew about it. The earliest record of the song, the lyrics of which are a kind of "paper of pins", was in a songbook. If Henry VIII had written it, no one would dare publish it.

  • @me0rs0 thats true?

  • @me0rs0 Quite so - I do believe that you're perfectly right. Strange, however, that a song that old could make it to our times without loosing it's fascination. At least for me - and I am German. But this song still makes me feel all right and I can't even explain why...

  • @me0rs0 It's actually an Italian composition, did not reach England until the early Elizabethian era. No one truly knows who originally composed the song. Although it is rumored the lyrics are in reference to Ann Boelin.

  • @me0rs0 Agree with you except for the commonfolk point, this piece was not written by a commonfolk but for a very talented musician, very probably a famous musician from that era. It's jsut the song stands anonymous by random reason.

  • @WiltatKansas These kinds of songs were by nature anonymous that was sort of the point.

And don't think commonfolk means untalented in writing music.
