For me it was good to read it because I did not realized some important facts in anime (some fighting scenes were too fast to understand for my poor woman brain ;-D ).. and what I really liked was description of inner feelings of Rei a and his "realationship" with Yukikaze.. The book was translated into English in 2009 (FINALLY).

@mindsoulbody Not necessarily. As long as the computer(s) calculate the nozzle positions accurately enough it can do this. Mig 35's and Su-35's can do similar moves. Acceleration at the end though... Thats up to this sci-fi universes power plants.

@suraxis Well, the nozzle position WHILE it is holding itself in a high angle of attack position+going along w/ the ship+maintaining balance against vectored wind have to be calculated. AND w/o any way to provide lateral directional thrusters those nozzle won't do much when in side way moves. Remember it isn't just staying relativelye upright...it is moving forward against wind too.

@mindsoulbody Hight alpha flight doesn't require huge amounts of data processing. Search up videos on the F/A 18 HARV High Alpha Research Vehicle. Design upgrades and power plant improvements have helped reduce the "dancing on the head of a pin" effect you're probably thinking of, especially for the f/a18.

But I'm talking about the fact that in THIS case, yukikage fell off of the deck then (look carefully) rotated itself at least 45-60deg, to face itself along the side of ship. THEN it wasn't moving nearly at the speed of the ship. AT THAT SPEED, you will need something to keep the upper portion of the plane tilted up.

Theres a set of cannards built into the forebody on the LEX, and as long as you have minimal airflow over a large enough wing area high AOA flight is still sustainable. Don't forget about wind and gust speed as well. You've never seen a sustained Pugachev Cobra from the F-22 or Su-33?
