  • Perhaps they were just lip syncing at the beach.

This group actually came and played at Glendora High School(Where I was going). Mark Volman totally upstaged the others. They knew how to write powerful melodies. To this day, you will hear the song Happy Together in commercials, so Bonner and Gordon are still making money.

  • Was this performance a special television appearance for them, or was this on a regular t.v. series? Does anybody know? Just curious.

  • I believe this was December 1966, just before they hit it huge with "Happy Together".

I'm wondering why Mark Volman is "playing" drums- was this before Johny Barbata joined the group?

Chip Douglas (on bass) was such a cutie!

  • Where's the rest of the drum kit? Lost in the sand dunes? or Tide came in and washed it away haha.

  • hahahah 1;34 mark volman with the drum hahaha is funny

  • thums up if QUINN FABARY BROUGHT U HERE

  • @poohmuffy14 hahahaha that fic

  • I love the Turtles even more now, and I had just about every record they ever made even back then!! They are just the coolest, most fun guys and they make incredible music together.....I think their music had more sex appeal than anything they have out there nowadays and they didn't have to say one wrong thing to be that way...they just had 'it'. I've seen them 7 times and can't wait for the 8th. If you get a chance, go see them...they ROCK!!

  • Is that Pacific Ocean Park in the Background?

    Thank You

  • Until now, the only version of this song I ever heard was the remake by It's My Party. Shows you what I sheltered life I had in the '60s. : ((

  • Geez, do I ever miss the 60's. I absolutely hate today's music. These were the best of musical times, such wonderful music from that era.

  • Nice song written by Steve Barri & P.F. Sloan. Wish I could find Betty Everett's version, though. Her version is steamy!

  • Welcome back...we all missed you!

  • I saw these guys in the late 60's at Villanova University. They opened with this song and it was amazing. This was always my favorite of theirs.

  • I agree! An excellent song by a group that was mostly known for Happy Together. Satellite radio does play many of their hits. Especially like how the camera moves over the girl's shoulders for the closeup! Excellent!

  • A great early "Turtles" hit. It's too bad most people only know them for "Happy Together." While that's a great song, they had so many other good ones that most people have never heard of. This song epitomizes mid-1960's California.

As to whether it's 1965 or 1966, I agree with whoever said that based on Howard's sideburns, it's 1966.

  • It's actually Dec 21, 66. I have the full episode of Where The Action Is that it appeared on (with the original Lays potato chip commercial)!

  • I think it's a toy though cus it doesn't move and it's too small. It may be a small toy dog.

  • Wow, to have the cool ocean breeze flowing through your hair while listening to the Turtles, priceless. California 60's music scene at its best!

  • [2]

  • yes it seems one lol

  • Dead mouse, yes. Check out the line "You don't know how friendly I can be". This was a battle against the censors time

  • it's amazing how things have changed.....now songs consist solely of four letter words...

man i can't get enough of howard's voice!!!

  • Wow, haven't heard this one in so long it's like the first time -- but I know the words!

  • I can remember I was only 10yo living in a boring suburb of a small town in Holland Then one evening in my bedroom while laying on my bed, being bored they suddenly played music from an american band named: The Turtles, on Radio Luxembourg...then the most progressive music station in Europe...I fell in love with the voices of Howard Kaylan & Mark Volman ever since. Right on to their Zappa years and Flo & Eddie...:-)

  • They also performed this on Hollywood Palace with Jimmy Durante hosting. Johnny Barbatta was on drums twirling away on his sticks. The best drummer they ever had.

  • chief seiter was also good

  • wow that back ground singer touched my soul what a voice

  • I would like to dedicate this song to you Jenny!

  • What ever Year Its Was...It Was CARL WILSONS Birthday That Day! he either turned 19 or 20 on this day! being born in 1946! Miss Him! I LOVE this Video..Oh BTW...Carl Wilson..Is The Lead Guitar Player Of The Beach Boys! :-) And He Is Very Much Missed! <3

  • Oh no doubt "Justa" Carl was a big part of the Beach Boys. He would have turned 20 that Day. I was only 3 months old that month lol. Now I'm middle aged! My how time flies.

  • i just ADORE CARL! i think of him when i hear this song! haha! too bad i was born in '77 and he's been gone since 1998! :-(

I KNOW i was BORN in the WRONG TIME! :-( ah well! <3 Carl Is AMAZING! and So Are The Turtle! :-D

  • Warren also penned "Like The Seasons" for them in 1970

  • Actually, Like The Seasons was penned back in 1967, right around the time of Happy Together, but you're right that it was written by Warron Zevon. That was the days before he became big with tunes like Werewolves Of London and Exciteable Boy.

  • Didn't know that , thanks. Any idea where this was filmed? North of Santa Monica maybe?

  • It was "(You Don't Stand) An Outside Chance"..I first saw this one here and I hope youll find it too cause its sooooo good!!!

    Take care!

  • I heard outside chance on fm the djs were on strike so they didnt say the group my guess was the leaves not a bad guess since jim pons was in the leaves.

  • Is that a mouse that Howard is holding? He dangles it in front of Chip Douglas? LMAO! Wait... I may be wrong, this may just be 1966 going into 1967 because Chip is there and not Jim Pons. Plus Kaylans side burns weren't that big in 1965. This was a 1966 hit not 1965. Being shot in B&W threw me off, It would be just before the Happy Together time period so yes it was aired on Dec. 21 1966.

  • Yes! It Is A Mouse! :-| WTF?! hahahahaha! i hope it was not a real one! that would of been cruel! Love This Song! <3 Wish i was around then! :-(

  • Yes Dick Clark mentions the Christmas reference it would be 1965 going into 1966. I do believe they were in transition of drummers at that point. Right before they hired Johnny. You can blame Oldies radio for killing off many of these groups other hits like this one. No The Turtles were far from 1 hit wonder status, although you wouldn't know it today.

  • Thank U

  • this was before the " music video" was invented. This happened alot in the 60 and doing outside broadcast and overdubsing the track ( whoever they did it) sometimes it worked, sometimes it didnt, lol, suprised this worked half the time

  • LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <3

  • Why is Volman drumming? Was this after Don Murray quit and before they hired Jon Barbarta?

  • Must've been, although from what I read on Wikipedia, they briefly hired Joel Larson before settling on John Barbata.

  • They had several top 40 hits...starting in late 65 and their last chart entry was in 1970....

  • Love it - Two years earlier and they would all have had crew-cuts.

  • the turtle sound it,s great

  • Hahahah, Mark Volman is a weird man. :) I love the Turtles. Flo & Eddie forever. :D

  • attention whore. the other band menbers had to have gotten tired of that crap.

  • Man, nobody could harmonize like Flo & Eddie

  • bandcouver, I am going to try to find another collection of the Turtle's music. Hopefully I will get this one and some other gems. Thanks for commenting on what I said. In my opinion, the Turtles were one of the great bands to come out of the sixties.

  • Amazing harmony, one of the greatest vocal bands ever- I'll take the Turtles over the Beach Boys any day. LOL @ Mark! What a nut! :)

  • you joking dude, good but not a patch on the Beach Boys

  • Oh,I'm not saying they were better,I just prefer their vocals over the Beach Boys, whose higher pitched harmony tends to grate on my nerves pretty quickly. I can listen to about 3 BB songs and that's enough, I can listen to the Turtles all day long.

  • plenty of their songs are not high pitched

  • Too bad this is not on the cd, Best Of The Turtles. Thanks for this video.

  • Unfortunately this song didn't chart very high on the national charts back then ,but, it should have been included on the collection you have as it was released as a single. I have a Turtles collection from Holland which includes this very overlooked classic.

  • Sorry for the error in my post about the death of Alan Bonner: his last name was Gordon. His writing partner was Garry Bonner.

  • I just read in the paper (11-29-08) that Alan Bonner, a co-writer of this and so many other Turtles songs just died of cancer, at age 64. Damn!!!

Thanks for everything, Alan...you will be missed!

  • Um, actually, this song was written by P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri, not Alan Gordon and Garry Bonner.

  • Right you are...I was just repeating what the obit said.

  • I dIG mARK wYNTER'S 1964 VERsion.

  • I guess Don Murray had just quit the band, and they hadn't hired Johnny Barbata to replace him yet, and that's why you've got Volman pretending to play the drums.

  • IIRC, Murray had quit and Barbata joined the band before Chuck Portz left (early 1966?). Chip Douglas plays bass in this video. For some reason, Barbata wasn't with the band for this appearance for some reason, but he was a member at the time.

Video with Barbata and Portz in the Turtles at the same time exists on YouTube.

  • Thank u

  • its cool you see alotta sixties clothing

    nowadays

  • I like this song..

  • one of the best of the American bands coming out of the 1960s.....

  • Send this to a child, grandchild or anyone who asks: "What were the 60s really like?"

  • Isn't that a Stridex Medicated Pad in his hand? I hope so anyways ;-)

  • I like Mark Wynter's version. It had the great '60s British beat.

  • I don't understand the sudden ending...people start cheering before there done.

  • What could be better, The Turtles on Malibu Beach doing an instant classic. These guys were an unstopable hit machine.

  • Yeah! Chip Douglas on bass! Volman on drums?

Hey Vidiot... I'm sorry KING Vidiot- I knew some kat that discussed the cons of psychedelic psilocybin with Chip. :^/
