  • I always thought ju-on was scarier than ringu

  • Thank you Swan for introducing me to so many j-horror movies.

  • R.I.P rodger if it wasn't for you I would've never discoverd many Japanese movies

  • Rodger...we love you!

  • My 3 favorites are Marebito, Noroi, and Audition ... check them out!

  • the usa ver of ringu is funny as fuck

  • Top J-horror I would like to see: Sadako from Ringu VS Kayako from Juon (a la Jason VS Freddy...or was that Predator?)

  • That's your J-horror collection?! Wow....

    Can I room with you?

  • My Top 5: Cure, Kairo, Noroi, Ju On 2, Audition

My Low 5: Id, Kichiku Dai Enkai, Demon Hunting, 964 Pinocchio, 9+1

Nice reviews. I hope you're still watching Asian Horror because there are lots of good ones out there.

  • I just read some comments and noticed that this guy passed away some time ago. In any case, I'll honor his efforts and watch all of his J-horror reviews over time.

  • Awesome review Swan!

  • the fuck was wrong with billy drago?

  • My Top 5 Best horror films

    5 A Clockwork Orange

    4 Blue Velvet

    3 Suspiria

    2 Audition

    1 Salo

  • @FriedAbortions i wouldnt call clockwork orange a horror, more of a psychological movie. i'm not even sure what genre you'd class it as tbh, good list though, although i felt that salo was just overly grotesque instead of focusing on horror. the shit eating scene made me gag. though the last scene where they were dancing was an awesome ending.

  • i still go back to his reviews for reference on what i wanna watch next!

  • great job dude. Your reviews are awesome. I have a few asian horror films here and there but your reviews always inspire me to go out and buy more.

  • I haven't watched any jhorror movies yet, but I was looking around at trailers, and I can't sleep even by just watching clips and trailers, can't wait till I watch a movie!! ^_^

  • I was buying some Jhorror, and i remembered Rodger's videos. Man I miss him so much. We all still remember you dude.

  • I wonder what he thought of Ichi the Killer. I guess I'll have to search his channel and see if he reviewed it. Even though I just found his channel today, RIP Rodger.

  • watch,dont fish and drive!

  • For the Ringu, I've watched the American version. Shockingly it was good O.O....

I haven't watched the Japanese verson but I would not be shocked at all if it beats the American version XD

  • Painted Skin (another asian film) is something I think you might enjoy based on your choices...

  • Thanks Hollywood for spoiling all these first three "classic" j-horror movies by fucking them up the way you did. Not to mention casting that dumb ass buffer bitch.

    PS

Fuck you hollywood (and alike) moviemakers.

  • swan-san i llove all your rewievs you are the best

i cant believe it that this is the last video from you

    YOU ARE THE BEST

    R.I.P.

  • noooo. Rodger I can't believe you're gone. I wanna cry.

  • see entire edition with the following film right here at a v a t z . n e t remove spaces

  • hey swan love your reviews man!! Thanks for the recommendations of scary J-horror films!! Also I think you should watch other asian horror films like Shutter. Shutter to me was a really great and scary movie. Its one of my top fives!! lol. Although the remake in the U.S. Sucked!! I recommend the original to watch.

  • @xiong532 dude, he's dead. i dont think he can review anything at the moment.

    RIP. SWAN

  • Hey me again I have shown my friend your reviews and she thinks they are awesome, she suggested that you review J-horror called hair extenshions.

  • Roger you were a Nice Dude. It's sad that your gone and we get no more Awesome Reviews.

    R.I.P.

  • Nice Review

    R.I.P SWAN

  • Swan's reviews about these Japanese horror movies are top-notch. Why must god always take the good people R.I.P. Swan

  • OMG I love your reviews, although most of the films I have not seen I know want to watch them because of your vids. If you do make more review videos can I ask you to review Battle Royale as it was the first J-Horror that I had ever watched when I was 13.

  • your taste is so cliche'

the ring? ju-on? gimme a break man, haha. you redeemed yourself a little though with your collection.

i dont agree with you about audition. It was good, but it wasnt one of takashi's best. I honestly dont think anything ive seen tops ichi the killer. Im surprised battle royale didnt make it in your review, thats an awesome movie. May not do due justice to the manga, but still good.

rampo noir is pretty fucked up, so i agree with you on that.

    interesting video.

  • Wow, I read on his channel that he died. Aww man that's so sad, I was hoping he'd release more Japanese horror reviews but that's sad.. Well, R.I.P man, you sure will be missed! It's thanks to you that I began watching Japanese horror movies.

  • Oh god Tokyo Gore Police haha I watched that with my friend. We couldn't get through it because we didn't know what was going on. Definitely the goriest film.

  • o yea i still dont class sadako as a villian, more a destressed spirit, i mean how unlucky can ya get, shit life every1 thinks shes a freak, people dying near her all time, the man she loves dies her dad kills her, and when she dies shes got more problems, give her a chance lol, (am only joking mate am drunk lmao)

  • haha Ring was my 1st japanese film i watched. yea do ya self a favour stay away from american remakes. they add loads of pants scenes in, same with the grudge

  • It's hard to believe that RodgerSwan died. He was so cute. I love his review videos. RIP!

  • These reviews will be missed dearly!!

  • hey swan, do u actually like to fatal frame series for ps2 (1-3), xbox(1-2) and wii(4) ?

  • @WuschelofDespair In case you haven't learned yet, Swan passed away 6 months ago....

  • @secretasian07

oh im sorry to hear that... I didnt know that... I thought the RIP was because he does not make any new videos anymore, reviews like this one... would u be so kind and tell me how it happend? my grandfather passed away on tuesday and his funeral was on friday

  • @WuschelofDespair Swan died from internal bleeding in his abdominal cavity caused by pancreatitis. If you go to his channel, you'll see his last video (which should be featured) was on Jan. 25th. He died 2 days later on the 27th. It is a huge shame that he died. I'm sorry to hear that your grandfather passed away also.

  • Really glad I found this - thanks Roger! He is bang on right about Audition and Strange Circus. Thanks for opening up a new genre of movie for me!

  • Oh no!!!! Why all knowledgeable, bright, unique human beings need to pass away so quickly. T.T.

  • Wow audition was a boring, WAY over hyped movie. I watched expecting to be mentally disturbed and scared but no. It is so drawn out. I kept asking "well maybe the horror is in the next see" but time after time i just got boring, confusing dialog. When the end came along and I got to see the "terribly horrorfying and gross" ending I sat, watching in amazment that so many ppl could get so worked up over someone with needles in their eyes. VERY dissapionting....

  • i agree with you soooooooooooooo much with MAREBITO it was such an amazing film, but i remember when it was released it was overshadowded soo heavily by one of his other films

  • I`m Agree, Audition is the scariest fucking shit ever made... We miss you Rodger...

  • I'd like a review of Evil Dead Trap 2, if you can land your hands on a copy.

And as far as watching online, I only did that with a Thai film called 'Scared', for which no American release is planned, nor is there a version with English subs.

  • @Nyarlathotep9 dude he passed away he cant review any more films sadly I belive this was his last review

  • @thefatman69dude Oh my god I had no idea.

  • @Nyarlathotep9 yeah It came as quite a shock it was very unexpected since he was so young. I miss his reviews and I miss his other series. I never met him but I had a chance to experience japan through his eyes and it was indeed a great experience. most of my j horror I own because of his reviews. he was a fantastic guy who's life was ended way to early.

  • @thefatman69dude I agree completely. It is a real shame. I never even spoke to the guy, but he seemed genuine, and just a really sweet guy.

    Rodger Swan - RIP

  • Rest in peace, Swan... I just found these videos and it makes me sad to know that there won't be any more. Again, my condolences go out to Rodger's loved ones...

  • swan you rocks ;D

  • I've probably watched this video about 50 times alone ha ha. Great video as always! I always enjoy your videos =)

  • You kinda look like somebody famous, i don't know the guys name right off the bat but you do look like him.

  • Whyyy is he dead?? oO

  • @vampiresweety yes hes dead check his channel in the info

  • @vampiresweety He died at the end of January.the 26th I believe.

  • I will totally hunt down Audition here in Denmark to honor Swan!

  • this where exactly the movies a started whit. you have a good taste =p

  • I miss u swan.... great person u will be missed

  • what? is he dead? or did he just leave youtube ? oO now im shocked!!

  • He died a few months ago.

  • It's sad to know this is the last review Rodger will ever make :( Rodger I will miss you. And so does thousands of other people here.

  • I love J-horror.. Keep up the good work ^^

  • @stovnergutt

I wish he could keep up the good work. This very cute & Very sweet young man passed away.

  • youre totally right i looooved strange circus soo much and audition is just perfect ^^ you totally have to read some books of the author of audition ´*ryu murakami* ´Read * in the misosoup* its such a creepy but awesome story ^^ by the way did youve seen burakku kisu (black kiss) ?? also one of my favorites ^^

  • @vampiresweety Ehm, he can't read it and won't be seeing your comment.

    He passed away in January..

  • In Tokyo Gore Police when body parts are flying, if you look carefully you can actually see some logos on the body part props XD

  • You didn't mention one of the famous japanese horror movies "Ai no borei"(Empire of Passion). You have well in it, like in "Ringu". You ever saw this movie?

  • SWan you will be missed...RIP

  • @sanatayesse seems like he was a really cool and nice person... rip swan

  • @sanatayesse you mr. swan was the best j-horror film critic i've ever saw! you will be truely missed! LONG LIVE THE SWAN!!!!

  • I don't want this to be your last one, Swan. :(

  • now when you mention sex is it like tokyo gore police's sex club scene with the chair woman or tetsuo the iron man

  • wat about blind beast vs killer midget or uzumaki for the worst and sodom the killer

  • Uzumaki is cool. I liked it.

  • Man, when will you be reviewing the new "Ju-On" series (released in '09, i guess)?!

  • Good review Swan. I saw the Audition movie on the "Starz cable channel" before the Asian horror movies were being redone in Hollywood.

  • audition sucks, love ringu, suicide club is one of my top faves.

  • Pretty awsome list.

Audition was the first J-horror i saw.

The story up until the ending just got creepier and creepier. The part where she is saying "deeper deeper deeper" had me cringing.

Also Billy Drago's performance in Imprint pretty much ruined it for me.

  • Agreed. Billy Drago KILLED Imprint. And not in the good way. It definitely wasn't a stellar movie to begin with, but he was awful.

  • You should do korean horror now xD Or thai (*cough* meat grinder *cough*)

  • you should view some of the tomie films

  • I think id put it this way

    1.- Audition

    2.-Ichi the Killer

    3.-Dark Water

    4.-Ringu

    5.- Boogiepop and others xDD

  • is marebito the same thing as paranormal activity?

  • wish there were more than 50 episodes

  • I loved Strange Circus. Audition was the first J horror I've ever seen, and that was my fav for a long time, but I think Strange Circus might just top it, or Tale of Two Sisters.

  • tale of two sisters is a korean movie.. :)

  • Man your reviews are great and I have watched them all but I have to place these in what I think to be the best top 5.

    1. Juon

    2. Dark Water

    3. Marebito

    4. The Booth

    5. Reincarnation

then One Missed Call 1&2 and somewhere down the line Audition.

Hey thanks for all the reviews you have done, amazon loves you for it.

  • I have to disagree on Audition. While it's one of the only J-Horrors I've seen, I thought it had the fatal problem of just being too paradoxical. It's so relaxing, so interesting, and then the ending comes in and pulls you out of that mood... Not to mention the plot twists were easily deciphered, the easiest coming from the fact that it's on the front cover... Maybe I just didn't get it.

  • You know, I enjoyed this video.

  • Ring, Dark Water, Pulse, The Grudge... all those american knockoffs (not gonna call'em remakes) are just, just terrible....

    J-horror rule though.

  • I love J-horror, but most stores near me dont sell then (N)

The only original Japanese one i watched was Slash-cut, which was just american using japanese actors. Too much blood an a horrible storyline.

    Your reviews are aweosme!

  • wish you had a list of top 50, so i could read it :D

  • Hi Rodger. I love your reviews a lot. Congrats on fifty! I've seen some of the movies you're reviewed and loved them. Have you ever seen "Resurrection"? You should check it out. I've never seen any of your top five. I have been thinking about "Audition" and will have to check it out. No "One Missed Call"? *sniff* I hope you make some more. I love your reviews. :)

  • thx Swan!!! now i know which movies to avoid. u should make more awards for many others u reviewed. i think "the most weirdest" goes to "Uzumaki". and "the most twisted" should go to "Suicide Club".

  • shutter WAS NOT SCARY .

it's just made me jump , but never scared me . but still it's a good flick .

  • You should do a special on the femme fatales of J-horror: Sadako, Kayako, Asami, Tomie, Mitsuko (Dark Water), Nagisa, etc.

  • lol u funy. give shutter a shot

  • Oh yeah, Shutter is some scary shit.

  • haha^^ well i'm amazed with your top5 selection.. i mean, none of the 5 is scary with the strict definition of the word(well maybe except audition xD).. though all 5 create a very dark and scary mood.. i still think kairo is the most moody j-horror ever made :p

  • I think a movie is more than just scaring your pants off. Sure, sometimes those are fun to watch but I know I also like to have a good psychological movie that leaves me thinking for days. Oh and I agree with the most twisted is "Suicide Club."

  • Oh and I also think it has to do with the actors, story line and things like that too.

  • Comment removed

  • i agree. i love audition

  • I don't know if you know already, I did some research on Marebito a while back, the whole movie was shot in 8 days!Pretty amazing for the conclusion I think.

  • Hey Swan, do you ever watch other Asian horror flicks like the Hong Kong version of 'The Eye', the Thai horror film 'Shutter' or the Korean movie 'A Tale of Two Sisters'? All had crappy US remakes, but the originals are the only ones worth watching. Btw, I teach in Korea.

  • hey there, sadly i haven't had much experience with other asian films. a tale of two sisters is great though, I have seen that one. Hope you're doing well in korea!

  • Give 'Shutter' a shot. I would rank it up there with 'Ju on' and 'Ringu' in terms of heart-stopping scares. It gave me nightmares when I first saw it.

  • but dude the video was about japanese horror not thai horror but the shutter was pretty scary

  • @rodgerswan I hope you'll have a chance to watch other Asian films.

Like you I was more into the J-horror. But, after I expanded a bit, I found other Asian films to be a favorite.

    1) Shutter (the original Thai movie. Much better than the American re-make.)

    2) Yoga (Korean.....makes you rethink about Yoga)

    3) Coming Soon (Thai.....actually creeped me out)

    4) Phobia 1 and 2 (Thai....collection of stories. I'll leave you to be the judge)

Please let us know if watch other films.

  • wuts a good site to watch these movies?

  • AUDITION! First Asian horror movie I have ever seen, got me loving Asian Horror and a huge fan of Takashi Miike!!!!

  • i don't see what's so great about that movie. Watch Noroi the Curse. Now that, is a creepy, disturbing film.

  • I rate horror films purely on how much they ingrain themselves in my mind. My ultimate test for a horror film is if I can make my skin crawl by thinking back to a particular scene, character, piece of music etc weeks or even months after seeing it.

Based on that criteria, my top 5 are:

    5. Audition

    4. Dark Water

    3. Kairo

    2. Ju-on: The Grudge

    1. Ringu

I cannot overstate how much Ringu affected me. Even now when I wikipedia it I have to cover the picture of the eye. It's just so powerful.

  • Just curious, how should pacing be done in a story of any genre?

  • well.. it's difficult to say; especially if we're not talking just horror.

personally I find Peter Medak's "the changeling" the most perfect example of how to make a horrormovie to date. one of the very very few american horrormovies that I think would be able to compete with some of the scariest japanese movies out there. imo it dethroned "the exorcist."

  • I think the slowness of Audition was intentional. Why? - So that you gain deep rapport with the character; and then ......BAM! you get an in depth sense of the devistation and betrayal.

I would call it a "soap / horror"

I thought it was a great movie.

  • Wahhh You don't know how much I love you for this~!!!

I was just wondering what movies to play on my horror-themed party!

    THANKYOU!!!! *bows 9000000 times*

And the santa claus thing just sorta made me laugh but I really wanna watch that one XD

I wish I had your DVD collection =P

But I'm really tempted to watch some of the top five worst so I will look for 'Shadow of the Wraith' now XD hahaha

  • thanks for all of your reviews. I really enjoyed watching them all.

  • I really appreciate you rating these films.

  • 1. MPD Psycho

    I love Gore XD

  • Congrats on reaching your 50th video!! I'm really glad you made these movies. It actually inspired me to review Japanese horror movies myself. I link your playlist in all of my reviews. Thank you so much!!! :D

  • What about Tomie?? She's a bad ass villiain also. But I agree with Sadako.

  • Yes Dead Waves was horrible. Very Low budget. You should check out Jun Rei....that was bad too!!

  • Very nice video! You're quite a silly fellow. Hahaha! I will look into some of those films. Thank you. =) One movie I can't get my hands on is Vital. I can't find that movie anywhere... So I don't know what to do. xD

On that one film, my guess at the name pronunciation would be Synes-thee-sia. 'Thee' as in the name Theodore. I include an extra 'e' to stress the long 'e' sound. But you had close enough pronunciation. I'm not usually good with medical terms, myself.

  • why does no one mention 'Alone' even though it is not the best it is still very very good :)

  • Top 5 Worst J-Horror

1.(Otogirisu) St. John's Wort. Terrible. Check it out Swan: has megumi Okina from Ju-on.

    2.Tomie: Beginning

    3.Gakko no Kaidan, 1995

    4.(Karisuma) Charisma

    5.Tomie: Another Face

  • Top 5 Best J-Horror films

    1.Audition

    2.Cure

    3.Marebito

    4.Jigoku (1960)

    5.Joshuu 701-gô: Sasori(Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion

Best Villian: Kakihara tied with Mamiya (Cure), Alligator Vagina Woman and The Pop girl group Dessert (Sucide Club)

    Goriest Film: TGP

Worst Performance: Definitely Minoru Terada In "St. John's Wort" (otogirisou)

Scariest Film:"Rampo Noir", tied with "Box".

  • The 'Vital' front cover reminds me of the F.E.A.R 2 front cover. :P

  • why dont you review the host?

  • i totally agree with Audition

but you really need to watch The Great Horror Family its a horror comedy and you will nearly die laughing

  • your great man

i dont understand why youtube hasnt hired you to make movie reviews for

  • Best Villian: Ichi!

    Goriest Film:Tokyo Gore Police

Best Appearance by Santa Claus: Present

Worst Performance: Ah man.....the main girl in suicide club

    Scariest Film: Stacy, hands down

I think the best are Marebito and Audition

but I can't stand dark water, 1303, ringu, juon, and dead waves

  • rodgerswan.......You rule dude! Your Vids are interesting to watch.

It is cool to see someone on youtube who loves Japanese culture like me.

  • dude, i live in australia, we never get japanese films here, only anime. So basically I hav no choice but the internet!

LOL! Australia, you've done it again!

  • Yeah, i also live in aus, and it's you pretty hard to find anything other then the really popular/mainstream j-horror films. I sometimes have to resort to rapidshare to watch certain j-horror flicks.

  • Don't stop reviewing!!!

    It's fun watching your videos.

  • Dark Water rules!

  • Thanks for these videos, I've really been wanting to see some good J-Horror.

  • Wait...how do you feel creepy in a good way?

  • OMG!!, Ringu 1 and 2 were the first J horros I watched. They scared me more than any other movie to date. Last time I watched them was when I was 10 tho. lol.

  • Nice! Will definetly give Audition a try.

You should do a special review of the Thai movie Shutter, its a extremely scary movie.

  • Yaay for 50 reviews and yaaay for (hopefully) more in the future!

  • I agree with you audition is the scariest movie

  • Great review Swan! I'm suprised you don't have Ichi the Killer and Machine Girl on the list.

    P.S.

Wondering if you know of a Japanese movie where it starts off with a chase scene with the Yakuza into a forest that is cursed - they make them as zombies.

    P.P.S.

Wondering if you will do a future review of Tokyo Zombie and Exte

  • Versus is the zombie film i think your referring to

  • thanks man.

  • Kudos to you on seeing the original Ringu before the remake. More people should see the originals before they see the American remakes. Especially Ringu!!!

  • wow dude, I didn't discover your vids until not long ago but I've really enjoyed them. Congratulations on reaching 50 episodes. Hope to see more but, if not, you've educated me and inspired me to delve deeper into the genre. Best to you, Bro....and many thanks!

  • nice reviews Swan

  • So I should avoid the worst? I have not seen any of the worst yet...so I guess thats good?! I really enjoy Audition but Ithe supernatural horror is more scary in my opinion. Keep up the good work Swan!

  • Strange Circus was awesome. =o

    Marebito is awesome!!

    Audition is amazing. =o

I agree with you on a lot of your views.

    Nice video.

  • PS goriest film should go to GUINEA PIG EXPERIMENTS 2 FLOWER OF FLESH AND BLOOD!!

ALSO CHECK OUT MEATBALL MACHINE AND MACHINE GIRL

  • mail was supposed to have bad cg it was made for t.v. i was a fun mini series

  • do u really only have that many dvd's i got over a 120+ dvds haha

  • that's just my japanese movie shelf. I think I have over 250 dvds total

  • I agreed with Audition being the scariest as well as the other movies except Strange Circus. I watched it, but never fully understood what was going on. Especially the end. It was creepy, but that was it for me. Great picks by the way ^^

  • I cant believe that you didnt say anything about Sodom the Killer. That was the best movie I have ever seen!

  • Not digging the clean cut look. Last time you looked like you could smelt Iron in your mouth and forge an axe head on your chest. What gives?

  • haha well, it's a look I have to get used to as when I'm teaching in Japanese schools they don't really like teachers with facial hair (it's not enforced from what I hear but it's look down upon). So I guess I am psyching myself up for that hah.

  • do you teach english ? obviously most gaijins do this at first

sry if the question is silly because it is already mentioned in 20 of yur videos, but I just began to watch some of them =D

  • just got a job as an english teacher, will be starting in japan in august.

  • oh wow! really? good luck with that! And I agree with your thoughts on Audition. It was really good.

  • UR so awesome Swan.........Dont ever stop doing these shows.plzzz

  • Yaay~

    It's here :]

  • Thankyou Jason I really enjoy your reviews, congrats on 50 <3

  • Ringu and Ju-on were mine first two, as well.
