I really enjoyed Star Hustler on my local PBS station before it went off the air for the night.
I wonder if an episode exists for the Jovian impact of Shoemaker-Levy 9... I took an astronomy class in '94. My team did our final presentation on said comet. We were allowed to use the college planetarium. :)
yep miss him too...went with him once on a meteor shower trip out in the glades in early eighties...grew up in miaimi and the space transit planitarium was one of my fav places...great shows :)
RIP Mr Horkheimer, thanks for your contribution in astronomy and a better understanding of the universe. This doesn't only require knowledge but feeling also, your show provided both, Keep looking up!
Jack Horkheimer is the one that first got me into the stars and the 9 planets as a kid with star hustler I would watch him every night at midnight on wqed 13 just before they would sign off I learned alot from him his instructions were so easy to follow I was verry verry sad to find out he is no longer with us he was a great astronomer and will be missed RIP Jack Horkheimer and I will always KEEP LOOKING UP
This is quite fine tribute to Jack. It's really interesting because now Jack is getting a whole new crop of fans...posthumously. Though, in the name of astronomy, I'm sure he would be flattered.
I worked for Jack from 1976-1982 in the Planetarium & have had the wonderful experiences of chasing Solar Eclipses & Comets with him as well as those wonderful Star Parties he hosted...My birthday falls during the Perseid meteor shower - every year I have spent my birthday with Jack gazing at the wonder of the event. This year was the first year since 1976 I didn't have the pleasure of Jack & his humor to celebrate with. He was a good friend who will always have a special place in my heart.
Oh my gosh I didn't know that up until now. He will be missed. I have been watching him since I was very small, in fact I didn't know a time without his show. Remember I use to talk to my friends about him back in 2nd grade.
My late grandfather and I watched that show religiously. Although I've never had the pleasure of meeting him, the news of his death profoundly affected me. He will be missed.
Thanks Tony I had not seen Jacks show in some time and had wonder what had happen to him .. .. Maybe you could pick up where he left off? Very good tribute I know Jack smiling back at your work.
I'm saddened to see Jack Horkheimer go, even though I have never heard of him before, you are the one who has inspired me to "keep looking up", so keep putting videos out there and maybe someday you will fill his shoes.
Tony, you and Rob Bryanton of YouTube both have VERY distinct, captivating voices. I can easily see either of you being approached to voice-overs for commercials, radio, animation and movies, that's if it's not already happening.
Yesterday, Friday August 27th, I brought my wife, son, and my son's friend to the Roger Williams Park Museum's Planetarium and ironically after the show we came home, looked on You Tube for Jack's show and found a new voice doing it. Unbeknown to me at the time, Jack had passed away a week earlier. So sad to see a great teacher go. I'll miss his eccentric wit and wisdom. RIP
I just found out about his death :/ I might not have known him for many years like a lot of people, but I loved watching his show. We'll miss you Jack! Keep looking up :)
Great tribute... And I know I speak for alot of people, who may or may not have have already voiced the sentiment, that you are a fantastic torch bearer of the promotion of astronomy to a new generation. My wish is that your role expands and you are able to reach more people. Thank you for what you do
Youtube is (by providence)the time and the place for you,Mr. Darnell. Don't under-estimate the impact you're having on this venue. Rare indeed is an individual (yourself) who can deliver high quality astronomy videos with such an articulate style and flare. Farewell to Jack....and his mission continues through you. We truly love your work. Best wishes from Palmdale,Ca. (home of SOFIA)
Hi Tony, I feel bad that I haven't seen that show you refer to. But I have always loved the stars and knew that we are not alone. I am still amazed when I find out more about it. As for who will continue his work...you, and others like you! I saw your hubble deep field vid and was smiply amazed. I liked it soo much I have "Ultra Deep Field 3D" as my opening vid that begins whenever someone opens the channel. So, you and everyone like him carry his tourch!
Nice tribute.. but one question.. are you sure his show was Star Hustler or was it Star Gazer.. because I am seeing a LOT of the later under his name. :)
@Kazahmish Yeah, sometimes after the internet got big, they changed the name to Star Gazer because too many kids were getting results for the Hustler porn mag when trying to search for his show. So, they decided to change it to something more tame (and lame, IMO). I always preferred the Star Hustler tag, so I stick with that.
@Kazahmish Yes He is correct. Jack's show's started as 30 minute segments called "Horkheimer's Heavens". Later Jack produced "Star Hustler" which was later changed to Star Gazer as tdarnell sites.
Jack also co-produced a children's Astronomy book called "Star Gazing with Jack Horkheimer" .
@Kazahmish Well, right and wrong. It was called Jack Horkheimer the Star Hustler for years until 1985. Read this.
Jack Horkheimer was probably best known for his naked-eye astronomy television show Jack Horkheimer: Star Hustler, which started in 1976 and was broadcast nationally in 1985. Created, produced and written by Horkheimer, the show changed its name to Jack Horkheimer: Star Gazer in 1997 because Internet searches were producing results for the adult magazine Hustler.
oh my god -.- i shouldn't have clicked this the things u said and the point in my life that im at is totally fucking with my head but besides that nice vid and RIP jack
I am sorry to say I hadn't heard of his work, I will go look it up and if it is anywhere near as great as you say, I'll show it to as many people as will listen :) Because learning about the universe gives us perspective and teaches us about ourselves; we are the universe trying to understand itself after all. It's fundamental, humbling and important.
BTW, I would have loved to have heard him do a debunking of that stupid "moon sized mars" email that keeps resurfacing again and again. Seeing just how easily people are fooled proved just how ignorant people are about big the universe really is.
@FlowCell Here are some fun numbers for that, all rounded off to two digits.
Diameter of Moon: 2,200 miles
Diameter of Mars: 4,200 miles
Farthest Moon gets from Earth: 250,000 miles
Closest Mars gets to Earth: 35,000,000 miles
Now you can give them homework! If something twice the size looks the same when twice as far away, what would be the apparent difference when the Moon is farthest and Mars is closest?
Followup bonus question! Will you be emailing me this crap again next August?
I remember his show very well and especially loved the whistling theme. Thanks for playing that tune in the background. Any chance you know where I can find the full version of his original broadcast theme?
You wonder who will take his place, but just thing that if it wasn't for him, you would't be doing your little show in YouTube. Just think of who else might be out there promoting Astronomy today because of him back then.
2) ive never heard of his shows until you now mention it. a real shame.
also, thank you. i will probably look horkheimer up as i did with sagan. if you had never mentioned sagan, i never would have heard about the guy. and if you had never put melodysheep's #1 REMIX EVER on the front page of your channel, i never would hav been interested in him and never would have watched all episodes of COSMOS on hulu for free.
I never heard of Jack but I would have loved to seen his shows. You said you wonder who will take his place in showing the world astronomy, to me It's you because your teaching us as well and keeps me informed we are just a dot in this huge universe. Thanks!!!!!!!!!
My prayers are with his family. Its amazing how people inspires us and as generations come and go we get new people! For me The people that inspire me are People like you Tdarnell! As well as many other people that have inspired us young astronomers to keep looking up! I myself was always inspired by astronomy! I too one day want to show people that its amazing how We live our daily lives as it is and never think "I wonder what other galaxies are like" Or "I wonder if there is life out there"
I plan to live forever. So far, so good.
