I DO love George's voice and this is a fine rendition, but why show it on Youtube when it's either, totally out of synchronization, or being shown over a different video that has nothing to do with the song?? By no means blasphemous to Joni Mitchell's version, musically, I'd like to know why it's so disjointed. It is simply not presented the way it was supposed to be presented. The poster of this, or someone got lazy!
the only two people i have seen slag this amazing cover that seriously respected the original is a wife beating james brown lover and a joe jackon freek....go figure guys..lol
At the end of the day i know real jonni fans LOVE this version....a guy(GM) that owned the motown revial gig back in the 80's...different class....joni should feel blessed that he covered one of her songs!
Fantastic interpretation of this song. George is the master! Very well chosen images too!!! To dream away.........George's voice is beyond words really.
George Michael is not underrated what are you talking about superfluxxx ,the guy fills up stadiums until this day ,i saw him in Toronto it was sold out FAST ,George Michael is a legend and he will always be ,no miley Cyrus or whatever can compare to him .
Kinda sounds like Boz Skaggs after a couple of drinks doing karaoke. The song is so well written that it really exposes the singer's creativity. In this case it seems to me to be a bit more than George can handle.
I just can't get enough of George's voice. He's underrated today so much and doesn't deserve to be treated that way. I guess Miley Cyrus and the rest of the crew are more interesting....
@SuperFluxxx GM is the kind of singer that came to stay 25 years of career porves it... don't know how long Miley and Co are going to stay but george is something apart.
@SuperFluxxx you're so right ! We saw GM live in Antwerp, it was an unforgetable experience to see, and hear him live on stage. What a voice, especialy the opening scene when everything was dark and he sung in accapela ! He still is a topact after several decades, as well as asinger as songwrither.... go on George, don't you ever stop makin' that kind of art !!
That is a very nice, and fairly true to the original performance!
Usually, I don't like G Michael because of his faux breathless singing (Father Figure,
etc), where he sounds like he is trying to imitate Kenny Loggins with more calculated sexiness. But here, he sounds like he is holding back on the cheese, and just performing a great song. This is the best I have heard next to Joni's original, and Joni's live version . It is really quite well done!
@lancitos That's because maybe you stop listening to GM to Father fgure. If you check all his production such as "listen without prejudice" you can notice how his voice sounds different. He was just a 23 yo boy when he released Faith even though he pretended to be this older macho man with hi image at that time, hi voice was very childish. It's a shame that USA couldn't follow him during his growth...
Do yourself a favor and listen to a live version on Yout Tube with Herbie Hancock and Elvis Costello. Elvis caught me by surprise with his rendition. They made it work.....very well!!!!!!!! But Herbie and Tina nailed it!!!!!!!!
Delicious but it doesn't have the edge that the story and musical composition really have. Tina Turner takes it further. Even Joni has said she was blown away with where Tina took this song. This song is ripening like a good wine, it improves with age. Its the alto and rock licks that make the difference. And Wayne Shorter accompanying helps too eh?
I've been a Joni fan for 40 years and this is one of my all time FAVES of hers. More power to Mr.Michael taking it and nailing it. Because of this and the fact he loves Astrud Gilberto has shunted him up several notches in my estimation!
this was a special recording from a "sold on song" special...as already mentioned,i was a B side on one of the 2 CD singles of "This is not real love".
Can someone post if he released this song or is it from a performance. I'm sure it hasn't been played in the US and we wouldn't be able to hear this anyway if it were not for Youtube. Hell, we don't hear any of his music played except Last Christmas and even that's limited. Whoever blocked his music from being played in the US made a big big mistake. The man's a legend. Fans just find it the best way we can. Talent always survives.
As far as I know this song hasn't been released yet, I have all his studio albums and that song it's not there. It was a friend who shared it with me and now it's me sharing with all of you.
Thanks for sharing this. He does a beautiful job singing this. But then again, that's just one of his many talents he can take covers and makes them his own. It's become a favorite.
This is an amazing rendition. George Michael is such an incredible talent and he does this song justice. Thank you for posting this -- a real pleasure.
Awesome!!! Thank you so very much for sharing this - Joni is my fave with George Michael in the top 10..this is beautiful but the irony of mixing the two is not lost, sadly. Good luck George Michael on beating your demons...
