  • The secondary air pump whines for a minute on cold starts. The oil psr pegs (5) until the car reaches operating temp. At idle, should needle around 1.

As long as you see oil psr at idle, you are fine.

Cruising at 3000 rpm, the oil psr should be between 2.5 and 3.5.

You might even hear some rattling in the ingine compartment for a couple seconds on cold start. Don't sweat it. Keep the rpms up while driving. The car was not designed for putting along a 2000 rpm.

  • @lefthook and 69Foster; yes. These peg out oil pressure and a high speed idle (1,100-1,200) when cold until the cat warmer fan turns off. If it didn't make that whine on start up you would have a CEL for warm up air inj

  • @lefthook 103: I'm glad you asked that question. I recently bought a 1999 Carrera and my Porsche does the EXACT same thing, the oil pressure needle goes to no.5 when the engine is cold and I hear this whining sound for the first couple minutes after starting the cold engine. I'm more relieved now because that sounds like it is par for the course for '99 911's and the fact that my car is not defective.

  • hi i own a 99 porsche 911 i picked it up dirt cheap its a really nice car my question for you is it normal at cold start up for the oil pressure guage to be pegged to 5 and a whinning noise which must b some kind of an oil pump it goes off eventually.. and also what is that countdown with the oil light 3..2...1 ????

  • What do you mean? I bought/sold this one very inexpensively.

  • how can you afford these cars
