VLC is an excellent player. And I save my own videos and upload them to my other sites. VLC player does save them but I cannot put them onto my website or other sites as they only accept flv files,mpg or wmv. And VLC will only save them as xspf files. Which they don't accept. So to save and covert my videos to flv files I still have to use Real Player. Which is a shame. Andrea.

Here's my steps - they will probably work: 1) Go to "File -> Open capture device" in VLC 2) In "Capture mode", select "Desktop" and press "Play" 3) If you can't see the record button, then go to "View -> Advanced controls". 4) Press the record button to start recording, and then again to stop. The video is now saved as an AVI file in your "My Documents" folder.

Just a note about playing video as your desktop. This may be a BAD idea because it WILL slow down your boot time because windows has to load the movie before displaying your desktop background. It may also hurt your overall system performance because your desktop is ALWAYS running in the background on your system. If you have a pretty FAST computer, go ahead, but you will notice a slow-down with your performance.

okay, so when i rip a dvd, i use the same settings you did, but for some reason the file it made doesnt play on anything, it doesnt seem to have a file type to it, and i saved it with these settings Mp4, Div3, mp3 and for some reason it doesnt give me a file that i can play.

DVD's should work automatically. Original copies run by default unless you don't have a DVD-Drive. As for your Audio/Video issue, use VobSub to choose your settings and convert.

Well, Adobe Premier I think actually accepts all video formats. I recall using an Mkv and a Mov before on it. When you load a DVD in your drive you should see VOB files. You can either use those, or if you want, convert them using VirtualDubMod(Best to be saved as AVI)

I had just downloaded it before making this video. It's version 0.8.6c. How many different videos did you try? Some videos may not support the wallpaper function, while others may.
i think the vlc wallpaper function doesn't work for vista home premium (and i also tried the advanced option in preferences). i'm having no luck with vista!
The option to play videos as wallpaper is an option that's already built in to Vista (depending on which version you have). Do a Google search for "DreamScene"

Well i download an english movie and im from sweden. To make it easier for me to understand the movie i want undertext something. So i see what the people in the movie says. How do i fix that?

there is a chinese media player I've been use for a long time. It's called the Storm player, it basically support 99% of media files out there. In fact, the only known format of file that it does not support is corrupted files.

okay, so when i rip a dvd, i use the same settings you did, but for some reason the file it made doesnt play on anything, it doesnt seem to have a file type to it, and i saved it with these settings Mp4, Div3, mp3 and for some reason it doesnt give me a file that i can play.

Great tutorial, thanks. A few more details would be helpful, like the codecs needed to make a DVD playable in, say WM Player and to be able to edit the video in a video-editing program. I've made a .mp4 and a .mov version of a DVD movie that only play the audio. Your tutorial assumes viewers know what setting to pick. Ain't so. Thanks anyway.

DVD's should work automatically. Original copies run by default unless you don't have a DVD-Drive. As for your Audio/Video issue, use VobSub to choose your settings and convert.

Thank you. Since this tutorial only shows one thing that VLC can do, and as I was unable to get my converted DVD output into an editable format, can you tell me where I can find out how to use VLC, or where to get a converter that does create editable files for, say Vegas or Premiere? Thanks.

Well, Adobe Premier I think actually accepts all video formats. I recall using an Mkv and a Mov before on it. When you load a DVD in your drive you should see VOB files. You can either use those, or if you want, convert them using VirtualDubMod(Best to be saved as AVI)

I tried to watch a dvd this weekend and it wouldn't work with windows media player. It said it wasn't coded for the movie. IT did play on VLC!! I found VLC by using youtube! Thanks guys!

I had just downloaded it before making this video. It's version 0.8.6c. How many different videos did you try? Some videos may not support the wallpaper function, while others may.

i think the vlc wallpaper function doesn't work for vista home premium (and i also tried the advanced option in preferences). i'm having no luck with vista!

The option to play videos as wallpaper is an option that's already built in to Vista (depending on which version you have). Do a Google search for "DreamScene"
