  • Which Engl can handle progressive rock, instruemental rock, and something just short of heavy metal?

  • @PrsFenderJackson1980 All of them pretty much. I'd say Dimarzio pups into any of them except the Thunder and Gigmaster would get you there easily.

  • you know what's funny? a lot of people like the new fireball 100 more than the invader and the higher end engls because it's a great plug and go 2 channel amp as simple as it gets

  • What if I wanted to play seom death thrash kinda stuff like Dark Angel or Sadus or Kreator? Would any Engl models suit my desires for that awesome thrashy crunchy tone?

  • @KissMeImPunk Powerball or fireball. Powerball has alot more versatility, it can go from stuff like iron maiden and metallica to WTF. The fireball can do the same, but is not as versatile. If your just guna be playing 1 kind of metal and want a good clean channel too, Fireball. if you want versatility to have more tones, Powerball.

  • @jaki54321 Well I'm looking for something with..a very high gain. You think the Powerball could sound something like..Dark Angel?

  • @KissMeImPunk Oh yeah i dont see y not. Engl amps have soo much gain... I dont think you could go wrong... Also if you want some good retubes, buy some retube kits from Eurotubes(look em up on google), they have custom retubes for Engl amps.

  • @jaki54321 Are they like European only amps or somethin?

  • @KissMeImPunk no. wat country do u live in?

  • @jaki54321 US

  • @KissMeImPunk Hell ya they are in the US! xD You can either order them offline or buy them in some music store. Try The mad ape(Google) they have every Engl amp you could ever want. And free shipping too.

  • @jaki54321 Any chance I could get them through Guitar Center?

  • @KissMeImPunk Unfortunately guitar center does not deal Engl amps... sorry. However If i were you, i think ordering online from one of Engl's dealers(go to their website to see their dealers) it will be MUCH cheaper, because most of the time you wont have to pay the massive amounts of tax from this High end amplifier. Also most places will offer free shipping for it too. Musicians friend and The mad ape are good Engl dealers as well. Check em out. Some stores in the US do carry Engl amps tho.

  • @jaki54321 Fuckin' A..they can go up to 2K for just the head! How the hell are they that much just what kinda tubes are they using? I was hoping they'd have stacks or at least combos because I love the saturated ultra high gain..it's not exactly consumer friendly in terms of money though

  • @KissMeImPunk They do have combo's. Try the Screamer and thunder combo, also the Raiser. Engl sells VERY high quality amps. You get what you pay for with Amps, and with Engl you cant go wrong. For the Fireball/Powerball they use 6L6GC power tubes with ECC83(12AX7) preamp tubes. They do have a new line of Gigmaster amps which are mini amp heads.

  • @jaki54321 The question though is, what are the price ranges for the combos and do they give out the same saturated distortion like the heads? And will they be loud enough?

  • @KissMeImPunk Well if you want the best combo, the Raider is 100W of tube power, with 1 Vintage 30 speaker. People consider it a Powerball in a combo amp. its 2K. The screamer is about $1400, and the Thunder Drive is about $1100(with built in reverb its $1300). On musicians friend you can find the Thunder amps used as well for cheaper prices. If you want a combo, the Raider will be your best choice for quality probably, but for price, the Thunder will be. All great amps!

  • @jaki54321 So..the Raider will sound just like the Fireball? I just need something that'll sound like it and be just loud enough for practice and gigs when I get the opportunities. Right now I'm stuck with a Line 6 and it's alright, but you know how transistor amps are..

  • @KissMeImPunk You and me both... I own a Spider 3. Its nice. But not good for gigs. its not a transistor amp tho its a Digital amp... Transistor amps are like Solid state amps. The spider 3 is DSP based. Sure it probably has transistors, but its DSP based. Anyway sorry bout tat xD The raider would be like The Powerball. They are Pretty much the same. The lead channel 2 on the powerball sounds like the Fireballs Lead channel. So the Raider would probably be a Combo version of the Powerball.

  • @KissMeImPunk Also it would probably be quite loud as well. 100W of tube amplification is really really loud. And that raider has 100W of tube power. the only real difference between the power/fireball that i see is that the combo uses 5881 power tubes, while the Balls use 6L6GC. But the difference between them is jus a tinkle. Almost the same tube. maybe a lil break up difference but it is a combo, faster breakup may be better. idk. But it will be a loud combo. Only 1 speaker tho. Good one too

  • @jaki54321 Don't the 6L6s give off a more..saturated tone though?

  • @KissMeImPunk Well maybe jus a slight bight more, they are very similar tubes

  • more rounder than fireball, a little more dirty, it could perfectly combine with rest of the band :D

    Fireball - thrash metal :P

  • WHy is it so fizzy

  • The powerball is definitely rounder all the way around. More meat. It has less upper midrange..and/or more lower midrange than the fireball. Less peaks. Definitely a more broad spectrum tone out of the powerball.

  • nice tone all amps!

  • dude, you nailed the Exodus sound <3

  • imagine ball sacks actually battling with like swords and shit. lol

  • Winner is : Fireball!!!!

  • Yes, but Tech 21 TM10 won the finals.

  • powerball is better or?!

  • name of video is funny....

  • Great playing man. Intresting amp.

  • I'm trying to decide on the Engl Special Edition or the Engl Invader, any deas on which I should and why?

and if I should get the SE which should I get, the regular or the EL-34 version and why...

  • Invader! Cause it has dynamics, whereas the SE is flatter than 2 month old diet coke.

  • sweet playing. I'm sold on the Powerball. Half way done saving for it. Thanks for the vid.

  • this or a engl fireball e635??

  • I would also like to just point out for once that the engl powerball IS definitely capable of some very nice clean/cleanish guitar tones. Everyone knows its awesome 4 metal, but people just assume it cant do cleaner stuff without properly trying it. I got 1 recently and with a bit of tweaking on the amp settings and guitar volume+tone knobs I got a really nice clean tone. I find using the crunch channel with the gain quite low and guitar volume backed off a bit gives the best results.

  • use the powerball it kicks out more gain an the sound is a little more modern metal like

  • Hey if I want to play just straight brutal technical death metal, which one should I invest in; a Powerball or a Fireball?

  • Savage.

  • lol well i dont have that much for a savage, but the powerballs and fireballs sound very proficient for death metal no?

  • Fireball! Has more evil sound. Powerball is brighter, but also brutal.

  • from these tones (wich i would say are verry similar) get this if you already have the money for it, but the fireball if you don't have as much disposable income

  • Invader

  • Nice playing. Articulate and clear even when you speed up.

  • I prefer the fireball

  • hey man, that was on the low gain channel or the high gain channel?

  • High gain.

  • Dude, what the hell kind of job do you have to be able to afford one of these amps, nevermind BOTH of them? I'd go back to jail for a full year to have the Engl Powerball!

  • I´m a garbage truck driver. I don´t drink, I don´t smoke, I don´t have kids or pets to feed. It´s really that simple.

  • That's awesome that you don't drink and smoke. I love my kids but they do drain the wallet. Still would'nt trade them for anything. But I'll tell you what. If I had all the money back that I blew on cigarettes, booze and drugs when I was younger, I could certainly own a full stack of each of these amps easily.

  • Fuck that rules.

  • Hey dudes, what would you advice to someone, to get the powerball or to save some more money and get the savage? I read that the Savage ones have great sound even in the lower levels of volume, and makes them appropriate for practicing at home-very important parametre for me...

  • As far as I've read, the Powerball is capable of delivering great tone even at low volumes. When I tried it out, I had the volume around 2 or 3 and it was fine and not very loud. It also depends on territory you'd like the amp to cover. From my understanding, both the Powerball and the Savage are very versitile but the Savage's gain is said to be very tight-sounding and it is a more Metal amp.

  • Dude, the Powerball is also a pure, fucking metal amp. Modern hi-gain stuff is what it does best, its clean isn't the best, know what I mean?

  • Absolutely. I apologize if I mislead. The Powerball is also a very Metal amplifier, but from what I've read, the Savage is a bit more agressive. It also has some features I think the Powerball doesn't like a gain boost and a contour switch and a rough/smooth switch. I would go for the Powerball because it has everything I need, but the Savage, I would say, is if you need slightly more.

  • Powerball has the open and focus switch. Same as rough/smooth switch. :D

  • what a doosh, im here scrapping pennies to buy a pack of fucking strings or picks, and hes got too much money so he buys 2 engl amps.

  • Amps are cheap. Check out my Pontiac.

  • Hey man.. which amp should I buy? Engl Powerbal or the Peavey 6505 +? I play thrash and heavy, sometimes even death!

  • 6505+ is baaaaaad as in terrible get ENGL

  • Thats why alot of heavy metal /metalcore/deathcore bands use a 6505 right?

  • Alot of heavy metal bands cant afford 2,400 dollar amps.

  • Even if I did I'd still rather have the 6505+

  • Well If i were you i would go with the Fireball. I would never go with a 6505 unless it was modded, and even the with all the mods it ends up sounding like a Fireball with less warmth. If you think you need more than 60 watts tube than your crazzzzyy.

  • ENGL Fireball or ENGL Blackmore?

  • id say a blackmore is more worth it.

  • I think Blackmore is more versatile that Fireball

  • which one has more brutal distortion?

  • if your looking for the more powerful of the 2 it would b the powerball the fireball has lower gain settings and less variable tone controls but still packs alot of crunch and punch. The powerball on the other hand is an extremely powerful amp capable of great harmonic overtones aswell as sustain and clarity. It also has lots of tone controls aswell as 4 channels and a variable noise gate =) not to mention very clear and crisp cleans

  • "This video really just a demonstration of me having too much money."

    hahaha fan vad rätt! xD

  • Sounds like you have the thing on low volume. Whenever I've played one I've had it above 3 for volume. THATS where you hear how good a tube amp is.

  • That is what I call a muddy and ugly sound :)

  • Blame the Shure microphone

  • why don't you post a vid on how to have too much money? I want to have too much money.

  • Get a job, don´t smoke, don´t drink. That´s it.

  • Yeah well, I guess I fail on the drinking bit then ;)

  • its great to have bare money and be healthy while everyone else is coughing and being poor :D :D

  • im trying to figure out which fits my taste better, fireball or PB?

i play Children of Bodom, Sinergy, Kalmah, Norther, Wintersun, BFMV, Paul Gilbert, maiden, judas priest, megadeth, metallica

  • I would say powerball! Because it is good for melodic death metal such as COB, Norther etc. and it beats every mesa in my opinion so it is even better for Gilbert, maiden, megadeth and tallica :D

  • Gilbert uses Laney VH100R, Norther has used Peavey 5150, Bodom has used Lee Jackson GP-1000 preamp to Engl poweramp, some Krank head, maybe Rev100 and then VHT. I think Sinergy used some Engl head sometime. Megadeth has played through a load of amps and Metallica has used at least Mesa. So more likely you should just test those and decide which you like the most, you can't get everything from one amp.

  • Which one is better for thrash metal? Powerball or Fireball.. or The Marshall JVM410h?

  • definitely fireball

  • The Thing is I need a 100W head :/ and Fireball is 60 W

  • Why this ?

You know that 100W has hardly the same loudness as 60 W ??

  • How do you mean it?

  • I said that 100 Watts are not way louder than 60 Watts... I wanted to know the reason, why u need explicit...

  • Oh.. :D I play over a Marshall 1960 A cab.. which has 300W. And I want to get all the power out of it!

  • Oh ^^ believe me mate... Ya won't be able to use the 60W at full Master :D

  • I know that man.. I just don't want to burn anything :D

  • The new Fireball is 100W.

  • Yeah I saw it on their website. Too bad I can'd find any sound samples or vendors in the Netherlands. I dying to see what it sounds like.

  • Why 100W? You shouldn't pick an amp by the loudness, it doesn't make so much of a difference. You will probably never need or be able to run even 30W full tube amp on maximum loudness unless you're playing on festival stage without miking your amp, then you'd need lot more than 100W.

  • I know that. I'm getting the powerball probably, because it has more chanells and modes :D

  • Can I have it? :(

  • So I think what I am reading is you like the Fireball better than the Powerball? and the Blackmore better than either for non death metal? but prefer bogner for non death metal? Is that correct?

I was thinking about buying a Fireball but I don't play death metal at all, more like Lynch Mob type stuff. What do you recommend? thanks.

  • Fireball is modern high gain only. Blackmore is more versatile and less mid-scooped. I haven´t tested it properly, but that´s what people say. I have no idea about Bogners nor what Lynch Mob sounds like.

  • I like the fireball more in this comparison.

  • Really fat, nice, lead tone in there. Amazing.

  • kuulostaa iha samalt ku fireballiki :D

  • Sul on lutaa korvis.

  • Which amp would you recommend for a more grunge-like sound, like AiC era Jerry Cantrell tones?

I know Jerry used Bogner, just can't afford 'em.

  • If you´re not going to play death metal 24/7 and can´t afford a Bogner, consider Engl Blackmore.

  • FUCK YES!@

IM GETTING MY POWERBALL RIGHT FUCKING NOW!

    THEY ARE BRutALLLL!

  • i got my self a engl powerball today :D

  • The sound on the powerball isn't as tight & compact as the fireball. It does have more bass response, though.

  • the amps are great, and it is indeed a proof of you having too much money :D

but if i had so much money i would have done the same thing!

    killer sounds btw

  • hey dude, how long do you own these heads?did you ever need to change some tubes?

  • I had Powerball for about 6 months and Fireball was used when I got it. Never tried changing tubes.

  • hey , you could improve the tone with the preamp tOObz .

like brutal as hell tubes in the fireball for , a more brutal tone , and more open-sounding , clearer and smoother-sounding tubes into the powerball for more versatility .

  • Any recommendations for Fireball if I want it to be brutal as the bottom of hell?

Don´t have Powerball anymore. Clear sound my ass. Lål.

  • ^^ EHX tubes are nice . 12AX7LPS by sovtek , and my preferred tube , dry and brutal sounding , a tung-sol 12AX7 . f*** tons of gain , my randall RG50 sounds really impressive (think about deicide on scars of the crucifix) with that one in V1 position . and , you can make the sound more musical using a tube with matched triodes for the dephasing tube (V4 or V5) ... will reduce crossover distortion , making the sound clear and brutal . try some JJ 12AX7 too , they're musical and warm(4the pwrbal )

  • haha nad besides tubes are tubes really like in guitar worl the guy said that as long as theres no dust burnt on them and their still working properly then why change them he said they dont sound any differant

  • yeha fireball owns... chk out:

    watch?v=ndTMJ2vvVFA

  • for me, it actually sounded like the fireball was better, but it might just be your settings

  • It is better.

  • I thought that the fireball was the cheaper one?

  • It is the cheaper one. Versatility just doesn´t mean better sound.

  • How can you tell if its a Powerball V1 or a V2????

  • Don´t know what the difference is, but this one is V2.

  • I think V2 has Noice gate but the V1 doesn't.

  • so whats the difference between the 2 amps excluding sound....it looks like the powerball has a seperate EQ section per channel...what else?

  • Powerball has more features. 4 channels, two mid range modes for the lead channels (=soloboost), noise gate.

    engl-amps. com

  • omg brutal tone...very nice...me wants!

  • ok cheers

  • the little solo bit at the start

  • Still don´t know how I played it.

  • can you tab the little steve vai sounding solo bit and is there delay?

  • Yes there is delay, but I don´t know which part sounds like Steve Vai, nor how I played it.

  • hey man, I just got a powerball, and im playing through a carvin cab. I love the head, but i think I'm gonna sell the carvin and buy a mesa. Id appreciate If you would post your amp settings, just out of curiosity... sounds great!

  • I don´t remember my settings anymore. Besides, they were different with different guitars.

  • dude how loud is it

  • This clip was recorded at a comfortable bedroom volume.

  • They sound like they are Eq'd very similar, to your taste I suspect, which is a good tone to me as well. I think I would lean more on the side of the Fireball, I can't put my finger on it as to why. Oh yeah, it takes the same skill/concentration to play either way, without gain and with gain. If you suck one way you will suck the other. That gain is to scare all you old people away with all that condescending attitude you have. "My style is better than yours" Whatever, play what you like.

  • the thing we are forgetting is that it takes even greater concentration to play without gain at all haha

    especially soloing

  • Also known as "unplugged".

  • Great sounding setup! and it does take concentration to play with rediculous amounts of gain. Im wondering how the bridge pup sounded before you swapped it out?

  • It was a bit brighter and thinner. More rock than metal. It didn´t saturate enough with palm mutes, so I changed it.

  • everytime u do palm mutes it sounds wayyyyy to saturated

    why?

  • Because I use lots of gain to compensate my lack of accuracy. Although it may sound like it´s easier to play with high gain, it does require more concentration on other things, such as controlling and utilizing different kinds of additional noises that would be inaudible with lower gain. But through all that, plus the notorious wma compression, my guitar's base sound is still audible.

  • hey i am thinking about getting a powerball are you going straight into the amp there or are you using effect pedals too? sounds great though and youve made me one more step into buying it, and that dick head that said it sounds like hell is a fucking arsehole metal is so much harder to play than blues and he should learn to appreciate us! mint amp and your an excellent guitarist

  • Only a simple delay pedal in the loop for the leads. Just note that my bridge pickup is more powerful than what most stock guitars are equipped with. But if you´re only into metal you should also consider Fireball.

Blues is great music too. May be techincally easier to play than some metal. It´s more about emotion and stuff, which can be a lot harder to master than what many metal fans think.

  • i like blues too like rory gallagher and hendrix but i prefer to play metal, i am in a blues band and i am in a metal band too and my metal band is making an E,P haha. the feedback you gave me is great i have an emg 81 in the bridge pickup in my les paul custom and a seymore duncan in the bridge of my jackson rr1, so it should sound good through a powerball, what delay pedal do you have? i have a boss dd-3 there quite good! haha

  • Ibanez Soundtank Echomachine. Stay away from plastic pedals.

  • Holy shit, that's gotta be the most amazing metal amp I've ever heard... great playing, too

  • Im also not sure wether i like the sound here..or not :$

still like the cleans tho :P

  • Hey dude, How do you record your sound?

Are you plugging the Shure into a soundcard or do you connect it direct to the computer?

  • Was that chanel 3? What about knob position, was it the same in both amps?

    Anyway cool sound :).

  • Channel 4. Middle, treble and presence was boosted a lot on the Powerball, while on the Fireball only middle was boosted a bit.

  • Sounds great I just got my PB and it really gives my Diezel VH4S a run for its money.

Hey how do you record the sound so well? Are you using a external mic and recording software? I ask as I make a lot of demo vids for the guys on the ESP board as I buy and sell way too many guitars LOL and I am getting a new digital cam corder with an external mic. Do you think it would help if I get a good mic? Thanks man! Nice playing BTW!

  • Shure SM57 is probably the most widely used solution for easy high quality recording.

  • Thanks man, and do run that into a camera? or do you record it live and overdub what you playd during the video into the video? Thanks man!

  • My webcam software records whatever sound source I´ve chosen from Windows recording settings. In this video it´s "line in". And in my guitar karaoke videos it´s "what u hear", so it records both my playing and the original song.

  • ahh cool man, yeah hopefully my new camcorder will come with good software. Rock on!

  • hmm you seems like the only dude on youtube who can get some serious power outta this beast lol

    STAY METAL! \m/

  • These clips were played with my jazz guitar.

  • The amp must sound mint with a good guitar then :P

  • My Korean PRS (jazz guitar) is definately not worse sounding than my Custom Shop Jackson (hack & splat guitar).

  • Which would you say is better?

    How much each?

  • I think they both sounds awesome, Great tone on both.

  • Youtube should still sound decent if you have stuff mic'd up. I've seen plenty of clips that still have nice tone on Youtube. I think you just need to turn your gain down to like 4-5 (Sounds like you have it on 10 or something) and maybe muck around with your mic placements. Still sounds okay though.

  • As I´ve said, the problem is the default wma compression in my webcam software.

Gain is at 30%, which is a lot on the powerball. But that´s just the way I like it. I think it´s annoying when people are afraid to use enough gain. It´s not a magic button that makes everything sound better when you turn it down a bit.

  • yea it does sound fizzy.... i think its more the mic/preamp though. or hope at least.. it sounds like the gain is on 20. nice playing though.

  • y but powerball have noise gate and parallel fx loop :)

  • i like the dist on the ENGL fireball...

  • now everyone can see that powerball and fireball ave exactly the same distortion sound ! :)
