  • Bix left the Whiteman band in September 1929, due to his heavy drinking, although Paul kept inviting him back, and he kept refusing [Beiderbecke died in August 1931]. By the time this was filmed in early 1930, Andy Secrest had been firmly established as Bix's replacement.

  • Unbelievable.Whiteman is underrated;he led a great band, knew talent when he saw it,and had some great tunes.

  • For all my puttering around in the music of this era on YT, I never came across this piece before. It is not only extremely interesting, it demonstrates just what a really great orchestra this was. Fantastic music by some great musicians. And the leader's not bad either.

  • Its a shame Henry Busse was not in this.......

  • Eddie Lang!

  • @johnnyjolijt ...had only three years to live! Such a loss to the world of jazz and just the world itself period!

  • Chester Hazlett's clarinet has a lovely tone and that is Wilbur Hall on Trombone

  • Venutti and Lang are the highlight of this clip. As mentioned above by kikl2001: Ageless. Thanks Mr. Moyses (In June-07, I now miss your Trad Jazz on the web) BR

  • marvelous, simply marvelous.

  • test

  • You sure about the Wibur Hall part? He was credited with the trombone on the record (same Hazlett/Hall arrangement). Bix was busy hallucinating that mexicans were living under his bed at the time. The amazing thing is that the Venuti/Lang sound NEVER got old. You could play it today and no one would ever figure out it was 80 years old. Even Louis Armstrong couldn't pull that off. They were, and are, amazing.

  • Hi, I like your video and have rated it as awesome. Please check out my vid clip of some rare jazz musicians and dance band Leaders cigarette cards, issued in 1936. They include Paul Whiteman, Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington and many more.

  • Hi Sean... please note that the name of the terrific banjoist is Mike PINGITORE and not Pingatore. All the best, Nino

  • The trombonist that play Nola is Mario Romano born in Tagliacozzo (Italy) 1896, no Willie Hall

  • All you got to do is look at his FACE and see that it IS Willi Hall!! The same guy who the comedy act with the air pump.

  • No, Bix was Ill and didn't make the session. What a shame.

  • @seanmoyses Yeah. Ill with a bad case of chronic bottle flu.

  • And Bix?

  • maybe the finest american dance orchestra of all times in technicolor in 1930, first playback, soundtrack was first recorded on orders of Whiteman himself
