Bix left the Whiteman band in September 1929, due to his heavy drinking, although Paul kept inviting him back, and he kept refusing [Beiderbecke died in August 1931]. By the time this was filmed in early 1930, Andy Secrest had been firmly established as Bix's replacement.
For all my puttering around in the music of this era on YT, I never came across this piece before. It is not only extremely interesting, it demonstrates just what a really great orchestra this was. Fantastic music by some great musicians. And the leader's not bad either.
Venutti and Lang are the highlight of this clip. As mentioned above by kikl2001: Ageless. Thanks Mr. Moyses (In June-07, I now miss your Trad Jazz on the web) BR
You sure about the Wibur Hall part? He was credited with the trombone on the record (same Hazlett/Hall arrangement). Bix was busy hallucinating that mexicans were living under his bed at the time. The amazing thing is that the Venuti/Lang sound NEVER got old. You could play it today and no one would ever figure out it was 80 years old. Even Louis Armstrong couldn't pull that off. They were, and are, amazing.
Hi, I like your video and have rated it as awesome. Please check out my vid clip of some rare jazz musicians and dance band Leaders cigarette cards, issued in 1936. They include Paul Whiteman, Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington and many more.
maybe the finest american dance orchestra of all times in technicolor in 1930, first playback, soundtrack was first recorded on orders of Whiteman himself

Hi Sean... please note that the name of the terrific banjoist is Mike PINGITORE and not Pingatore. All the best, Nino
