  • "Then go for it"!!! Her delivery here is so un-Edith like. When she gets upset and stands up to Archie, she is usually very emotional... this time to bat she was so calm, cool and collected. Totally caught me off guard! Priceless!

  • I can always count on Edith and her goodness to make me cry.

  • It's interesting how Jean Stapleton plays the argument. She's brave enough to confront Archie, but still scared to actually do it. I also love the audience's reactions after Edith comes back into the house.

Mike: Give me one sensible reason why Ma has to be here all the time. I'll make it easier for you, give me one stupid reason ( LOL...I'M STEALING THAT LINE FOR MY OWN USE!)

Archie: Supposed we had goldfish, they'd die.

    Mike: That's stupid enough.

  • Eavesdrippin'!

  • Women like Edith represent the women who were brought up to be wives and mothers, they knew their role and knew how to handle their situation. Today women are loose, they get pregnant w/o getting married and are provided by welfare = all of us, or they go on t.v. shows looking for the real daddy of their 7 baskets.

  • @theintelligent1973 RWSB1793. 01/08/14/2011 A.D. THERE ARE MOMENTS WHEN EDITH COULD STRIKE BACK AT ARCHIE WHEN HE DESERVES IT,I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE SEEN HER KICKED HIM RIGHT IN HIS ASS FOR BEING SUCH A WISE GUY. AND GLORIA? WELL,SHE MAY BE HIS 'LITTLE GIRL' AS HE CONTINUES TO CALL HER,DESPITE BEING A GROWN YOUNG COLLEGE WOMAN AND SHE STILL LOVES HIM VERY MUCH,HE COULD PROVOKE HER EVERY NOW AND THEN-WHAT DAUGHTER OR SON WOULD NOT OR COULD NOT BE?

  • I always liked & respected Archie. HE was the ONLY bread winner, HE paid for the house, food, bills, rode the NY trains, HE was the sole provider including the pinko liberal ''sociology student'' and his ignorant wife who repeated what the pinko said, she had no brains, no knowledge on anything, yet she was quick to yell at and disrespect her own father. Archie put up with a lot in his own house. I would never have allowed that pinko freeloading for years and being disrespectful in my own house

  • @theintelligent1973 RWSB1793. 01/08/14/2011 A.D. ARCHIE IS ONE OF THOSE OLD HOLDOVERS WHO CONTINUE TO LIVE IN THE STONE AGE,A MAN WHO SIMPLY REFUSES TO ACCEPT THE FACT THAT TIMES HAVE CHANGED,THAT THE AMERICA THAT HE GREW UP IN WOULD NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN AFTER THE BIRTH OF ROCK AND ROLL,NOT TO MENTION THE CIVIL RIGHTS ERA WHEN WE AS AFRICAN-AMERICANS WERE NOT GOING TO GET KICKED AROUND ANYMORE.I USED TO WATCH THIS SHOW MYSELF AND I KNOW PRECISELY WHAT TYPE OF PERSON ARCHIE BUNKER WAS.

  • @theintelligent1973 RWSB1793. 01/08/14/2011 A.D. AND I CAN ONLY SAY THAT ANY MAN,AMERICAN OR OTHERWISE THAT TREATS HIS OW WIFE AND CHILDREN THE WAY THAT ARCHIE DID DESERVES NO RESPECT.I AM SINGLE MYSELF BUT IF ARCHIE WERE MY FATHER-IN-LAW,THERE WOULD BE NO WAY ON EARTH THAT I WOULD EVER TAKE ANY BULL-CRAP FROM HIM-EVER! I WOULD HAVE TOLD HIM TO GO AND SHIT IN HIS UNDERWEAR.

  • Jean Stapleton deserved an Emmy for this episode!!

  • edith has a huge ego to marry archie, i mean hes a raciest, he calles her foul names, and hes a male chovanist, edith should have dropped him years ago. why she loves him i will never know!

  • @kikyosan543 this jap has a lot of nerve criticizing an American when everybody knows that the japs are all concubines. You better LEARN ENGLISH!!!

  • @theintelligent1973 what are you talking about im am american and greek and russian and i happen to be a girl. not a boy. i know english very well and i speak it beautifuly! im a kind loving girl who repects very single person in this world!

  • perhaps it is 5:05 :)

  • 5:06 is hillarious!!!!! LOL

  • This show kind of reminds me of "The Honeymooners". Ralph was very abusive towards Alice as Archie is towards Edith. The only difference was Alice didn't take Ralph's shit, she always stood up to him. It's good to see Edith take a stand against Archie. Like Songsmirth said, she should have left him. I know it's only a tv show but this kind of thing happens in real life all the time.

  • Holy crap, Archie gave up the chair. I loved the audience's reaction to that. I especially loved how Edith stood up to Archie. Wonderful episode.

  • Is it me or does Jean Stapleton look just like Brittany Murphy in Clueless?

  • lol @ 5:15. If I were her I would've slapped him across the face.

  • I love Edith. She has a huge heart :)

  • if i was married to my wife can do what ever she wants if she wants to volunteer she can volunter what ever she wants to do she has all the rights too as long as i know she will be ok she can do what ever she wants

  • She was actually a really good actress.

  • @PsychLion yes,her and carroll o' connor were amazing. They did such a wonderful job at crafting their characters and even changing and evolving them over time.Watch the difference between the edith of the first season and the one that developed later, and observe the "wisdom of the heart and insight into the soul" of edith and the surprising tenderness and love shown by archie when push came to shove.

  • It would have been amazing to be a member of that live audience!!!!! What a thrill to see acting like this in person!!!!! AITF is the BEST show of all time!!

  • arent there any other bars in that area? lol

  • I feel sorry for Edith. I realy do.

  • @dartht109 It was supposed to be funny but I hated the way her spoke to his wife, like she was his servant. That's what he means that she's supposed to be at home tending to him. Only him. He has a comfortable chair and she doesn't. She doesn't get the food on the table when he wants he yells. He threatens her all the time and I thought she was going to have a heart attack. The more he raised his voice the more frightened of him she got. And this was supposed to be funny? I'd leave.

  • @dartht109 I always felt sorry for her but after all the years of abuse surely she could have stood up to him. She should have stood up to him and his filthy temper. I'd rather live alone. I would have dumped him a long time ago and enjoyed life. Let him be sour by himself or try to find another servant who has no self-esteem.

  • That´s you sweeteart?

Are you ready for your welcome home kissie. LOOOl. The bestt!! Love this show.

  • right wing fascists go to hell, the downtrodden aren't taking your pathetic shit anymore XD make your own dinner and do your own disgusting laundry, grow up and quit whining, your wife isn't your Mommy so stop crying =D

  • @alexp9999 Yep...cuz Palin is home making dinner....oh wait...

  • Just goes to show what great actors Carrol O' Conner and Jean Stapleton are. They played there parts perfectly. Pure magic..

  • @nline77 AMEN!

  • 3:42 broke my heart to see her so upset :(

  • Jean Stapleeton and Carroll O'Connor are classics!! Love them both!!!

  • Ugh): her character always upsets me. EVERYTIME I WATCH THIS SHOW. She reminds me of my grandmother. Her character is so giving, and sweet. I only recently found out she died in Archie Bunker's place too. That makes it so much worse.

  • Poor Edith breaks my heart when she gets upset. She is so like my grandmother. :'(

  • OMG love this one.

After the one where Edith goes thru menopause...this is my 2nd fav episode

  • Tell him Edith thats right woman stand up for yourself hellz yeaaaaaaaaa :)

  • Edith's character was SUCH a sweetheart and, she's VERY right. Helping IS very important. So many of these elderly people don't have anyone. Sad situation and I see it everyday. Families who have put them in the nursing centers. Many visit but, some have none. Just sit there. Waiting. I think I'd rather just hike as far into the mountains as I can and just be there.

  • If women of today, would love, honor and cater to their husbands the way Edith did, the divorce rate would be down to 0. ladies take notes, Edith is an awesome depiction of what women should be to their husbands!

  • @shannonanddee1 I would agree.Even so,a guy should be a little flexible.I wouldnt have a problem with the old lady spending time at the old folks home,as long as she didnt neglect me and make me eat tv dinners too often.

  • @IwontConform You can't cook? Or heat up tv dinners? Too hard? lol We don't marry to be servants. If the balance is off in a relationship, it is no real relationship. We begin as friends and it should continue like that otherwise one is a child and the other the controller. I still see it, sad to say. It's abuse. They think it's easier but in the long run they've lost themselves and the kids watch that. There's no respect and the kids see that too. Temper shouldn't be a tool.

  • @Songsmirth i wouldnt mind tv dinners if they were all foil like the old days instead of this plastic shit, lol

  • 3:40 jean stapleton is a damn great actress!

  • @princev11 She is AMAZING!

  • Great leftist writing. Created untold millions of democrat voters and helped elect Carter. Republicans need to understand that Americans are stupid the way democrats do. Republicans think Americans are smart people. Americans are total idiots and easily propagandized.

  • @usaleftistsareidiots

This is a very politically incorrect show, and that is why I love it!

  • @michaelbme

it shud be politically correct though but we do live in a pinko liberal society :P

  • In his interview for th Archive of American Television (you can find it on YouTube), Carroll O'Connor said that he thought Jean Stapleton was th one who MADE All In the Family th great piece of work that it is.

Episodes like this one make th case.

    BRAVA, Ms. S.!

  • Remember, back then Woman took care of their husbands, whether they deserved it or not. In turn Men revered women and were chivalrous., taking care of said woman.

  • I shed a little tear at 3:36...they don't make TV this good anymore.

  • i love carroll o'conner. :) he was wonderful as archie and this episode clearly shows that. even though he can be an insensitive jerk sometimes, he always makes me laugh.

  • man, I knew archie was an SOB, but I didn't think he was that much of an SOB. poor Edith! She's always such a sweetheart! Archie doesn't deserve someone as nice as her.

  • This is an excellent episode of All in the Family, partly because long suffering Edith finally stood up to Archie. Although Archie Bunker is hilarious as a TV character, in real life he'd be insufferable to live with.

  • I agree, marcfedak; Archie is a horrible person, a fat-headed creep. Had Edith a little less of an old-fashioned wife, and had more education, she never would have put up with his drivel......

  • Archie: "A woman should cleave in to her husband. Right here in this house is where Edith's cleavage belongs".LOL

Edith is the best in this episode! Love it when she slams the door in Archie's face.

  • "then go for it"

    served.

  • edith is partly to blame for archie's behavior. she catered to him and humored him and went along with him for a quarter century. of course he's going to act like that.

  • He was like that way, way before they met. Try watching every episode you can find and get the whole story first before cashing in your dumb card

  • @GordonRamsayFan. no "dumb card" was cashed in, at least not on my part. i said edith is "partly" to blame, not "entirely." if, as you say, archie "was like that way, way before they met," then edith's catering to him and humoring him served to re-enforce such behavior on his part.

  • i am all for house wives but only for good husbands! archie is great but edith needs to but him in his place every now and then... GOOD GIRL! archie just took it too far , but he was ready to suck up when he though it was her at the door, even gave her his chair! men like control but even archie knows he's nothing with out edith..

  • "I think people helping people is important."

  • "Right here in this house is where Edith's cleavage belongs" LOL

  • I sure could go for a cold beer

    then go for it. HAHAHA

  • fort riley was pretty stinko as i remember. dad was stationed there in 68 and i went to first grade there. all flatland no trees to block any wind and all the tornados you could want.

  • not 2 go on the devils side but....

i HATE when edith acts all angry like that!!!

    lol

  • You go Edith!!!

  • incredible how alot of men looked at volunteering and women's roles in those days. i knew alot of the older generation that were that way. but archie really loved edith. he just expressed himself as a real chauvanist. "...then go for it", LOL.

  • thats how archies generation was brought up that what he knows

  • Archie is mean to Edith.

  • Archie: when are you gonna shove off

Mike; Dont I Get A GoodBye Kissy

Archie; Aggh Get Out Of Here And Dont You Come Back Lmao

  • wow he let her in his chair!!!!

  • that man is too much like my grandfather ... but not mean at all

  • "I sure could go for cold beer"..."then go for it" LOL

  • I loved it when Edith stood up to Archie.

  • i was shocked

  • i hate when women cry

  • Because you feel bad, or because it's annoying?

    I find it annoying.

  • ...thw world is safe "from" democracy" God this show was so funny, no sitcom even comes close..too much damn political correctness is ruining this counrty and the rest of the world on top of that....

  • My husband is SO gonna be Archie Bunker

  • LuckyIrish - I feel for you then friend.

  • my uncle is archie bunker always has been my aunt less screechy

  • I love this scene.

  • Let me tell you something, Florence Nightingown! LOL!

  • Edith ain't bein a mother no more so why can't she work lol she got free time then

  • shoit archie allowing her to sit in his chair..or anybody for that fact..the only time i see him let ppl sit in his chair is when companies over

  • edith was my hero 4 how she stood up 4 herself herer!

  • Look what else the Good Book says: 'Placed by the Gideons.'

  • my father was stationed in Fort Riley

  • "HA, HA." The old-fashioned version of :D

  • Archie is a caveman!

  • One of my faves, love when Edith with stand up to him! Thanx for posting!

  • i was so glad that she stood up to him - way to go :D:D:D

  • Archie: Edith, don't start. I can't do nothing when I'm hungry.

Damn, that was touching, Edith crying.

Way to go Edith!!! "I ain't takin' no orders!"
