"Then go for it"!!! Her delivery here is so un-Edith like. When she gets upset and stands up to Archie, she is usually very emotional... this time to bat she was so calm, cool and collected. Totally caught me off guard! Priceless!
It's interesting how Jean Stapleton plays the argument. She's brave enough to confront Archie, but still scared to actually do it. I also love the audience's reactions after Edith comes back into the house.
Mike: Give me one sensible reason why Ma has to be here all the time. I'll make it easier for you, give me one stupid reason ( LOL...I'M STEALING THAT LINE FOR MY OWN USE!)
Women like Edith represent the women who were brought up to be wives and mothers, they knew their role and knew how to handle their situation. Today women are loose, they get pregnant w/o getting married and are provided by welfare = all of us, or they go on t.v. shows looking for the real daddy of their 7 baskets.
@theintelligent1973 RWSB1793. 01/08/14/2011 A.D. THERE ARE MOMENTS WHEN EDITH COULD STRIKE BACK AT ARCHIE WHEN HE DESERVES IT,I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE SEEN HER KICKED HIM RIGHT IN HIS ASS FOR BEING SUCH A WISE GUY. AND GLORIA? WELL,SHE MAY BE HIS 'LITTLE GIRL' AS HE CONTINUES TO CALL HER,DESPITE BEING A GROWN YOUNG COLLEGE WOMAN AND SHE STILL LOVES HIM VERY MUCH,HE COULD PROVOKE HER EVERY NOW AND THEN-WHAT DAUGHTER OR SON WOULD NOT OR COULD NOT BE?
I always liked & respected Archie. HE was the ONLY bread winner, HE paid for the house, food, bills, rode the NY trains, HE was the sole provider including the pinko liberal ''sociology student'' and his ignorant wife who repeated what the pinko said, she had no brains, no knowledge on anything, yet she was quick to yell at and disrespect her own father. Archie put up with a lot in his own house. I would never have allowed that pinko freeloading for years and being disrespectful in my own house
@theintelligent1973 RWSB1793. 01/08/14/2011 A.D. ARCHIE IS ONE OF THOSE OLD HOLDOVERS WHO CONTINUE TO LIVE IN THE STONE AGE,A MAN WHO SIMPLY REFUSES TO ACCEPT THE FACT THAT TIMES HAVE CHANGED,THAT THE AMERICA THAT HE GREW UP IN WOULD NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN AFTER THE BIRTH OF ROCK AND ROLL,NOT TO MENTION THE CIVIL RIGHTS ERA WHEN WE AS AFRICAN-AMERICANS WERE NOT GOING TO GET KICKED AROUND ANYMORE.I USED TO WATCH THIS SHOW MYSELF AND I KNOW PRECISELY WHAT TYPE OF PERSON ARCHIE BUNKER WAS.
@theintelligent1973 RWSB1793. 01/08/14/2011 A.D. I WOULD HAVE TOLD HIM TO GO AND SHIT IN HIS UNDERWEAR.
edith has a huge ego to marry archie, i mean hes a raciest, he calles her foul names, and hes a male chovanist, edith should have dropped him years ago. why she loves him i will never know!
@theintelligent1973 what are you talking about im am american and greek and russian and i happen to be a girl. not a boy. i know english very well and i speak it beautifuly! im a kind loving girl who repects very single person in this world!
This show kind of reminds me of "The Honeymooners". Ralph was very abusive towards Alice as Archie is towards Edith. The only difference was Alice didn't take Ralph's shit, she always stood up to him. It's good to see Edith take a stand against Archie. Like Songsmirth said, she should have left him. I know it's only a tv show but this kind of thing happens in real life all the time.
if i was married to my wife can do what ever she wants if she wants to volunteer she can volunter what ever she wants to do she has all the rights too as long as i know she will be ok she can do what ever she wants
@PsychLion yes,her and carroll o' connor were amazing. They did such a wonderful job at crafting their characters and even changing and evolving them over time.Watch the difference between the edith of the first season and the one that developed later, and observe the "wisdom of the heart and insight into the soul" of edith and the surprising tenderness and love shown by archie when push came to shove.
It would have been amazing to be a member of that live audience!!!!! What a thrill to see acting like this in person!!!!! AITF is the BEST show of all time!!
@dartht109 It was supposed to be funny but I hated the way her spoke to his wife, like she was his servant. That's what he means that she's supposed to be at home tending to him. Only him. He has a comfortable chair and she doesn't. She doesn't get the food on the table when he wants he yells. He threatens her all the time and I thought she was going to have a heart attack. The more he raised his voice the more frightened of him she got. And this was supposed to be funny? I'd leave.
@dartht109 I always felt sorry for her but after all the years of abuse surely she could have stood up to him. She should have stood up to him and his filthy temper. I'd rather live alone. I would have dumped him a long time ago and enjoyed life. Let him be sour by himself or try to find another servant who has no self-esteem.
right wing fascists go to hell, the downtrodden aren't taking your pathetic shit anymore XD make your own dinner and do your own disgusting laundry, grow up and quit whining, your wife isn't your Mommy so stop crying =D
Ugh): her character always upsets me. EVERYTIME I WATCH THIS SHOW. She reminds me of my grandmother. Her character is so giving, and sweet. I only recently found out she died in Archie Bunker's place too. That makes it so much worse.
Edith's character was SUCH a sweetheart and, she's VERY right. Helping IS very important. So many of these elderly people don't have anyone. Sad situation and I see it everyday. Families who have put them in the nursing centers. Many visit but, some have none. Just sit there. Waiting. I think I'd rather just hike as far into the mountains as I can and just be there.
If women of today, would love, honor and cater to their husbands the way Edith did, the divorce rate would be down to 0. ladies take notes, Edith is an awesome depiction of what women should be to their husbands!
@shannonanddee1 I would agree.Even so,a guy should be a little flexible.I wouldnt have a problem with the old lady spending time at the old folks home,as long as she didnt neglect me and make me eat tv dinners too often.
@IwontConform You can't cook? Or heat up tv dinners? Too hard? lol We don't marry to be servants. If the balance is off in a relationship, it is no real relationship. We begin as friends and it should continue like that otherwise one is a child and the other the controller. I still see it, sad to say. It's abuse. They think it's easier but in the long run they've lost themselves and the kids watch that. There's no respect and the kids see that too. Temper shouldn't be a tool.
Great leftist writing. Created untold millions of democrat voters and helped elect Carter. Republicans need to understand that Americans are stupid the way democrats do. Republicans think Americans are smart people. Americans are total idiots and easily propagandized.

Remember, back then Woman took care of their husbands, whether they deserved it or not. In turn Men revered women and were chivalrous., taking care of said woman.
i love carroll o'conner. :) he was wonderful as archie and this episode clearly shows that. even though he can be an insensitive jerk sometimes, he always makes me laugh.
man, I knew archie was an SOB, but I didn't think he was that much of an SOB. poor Edith! She's always such a sweetheart! Archie doesn't deserve someone as nice as her.
This is an excellent episode of All in the Family, partly because long suffering Edith finally stood up to Archie. Although Archie Bunker is hilarious as a TV character, in real life he'd be insufferable to live with.
I agree, marcfedak; Archie is a horrible person, a fat-headed creep. Had Edith a little less of an old-fashioned wife, and had more education, she never would have put up with his drivel......
edith is partly to blame for archie's behavior. she catered to him and humored him and went along with him for a quarter century. of course he's going to act like that.
@GordonRamsayFan. no "dumb card" was cashed in, at least not on my part. i said edith is "partly" to blame, not "entirely." if, as you say, archie "was like that way, way before they met," then edith's catering to him and humoring him served to re-enforce such behavior on his part.
i am all for house wives but only for good husbands! archie is great but edith needs to but him in his place every now and then... GOOD GIRL! archie just took it too far , but he was ready to suck up when he though it was her at the door, even gave her his chair! men like control but even archie knows he's nothing with out edith..
fort riley was pretty stinko as i remember. dad was stationed there in 68 and i went to first grade there. all flatland no trees to block any wind and all the tornados you could want.
incredible how alot of men looked at volunteering and women's roles in those days. i knew alot of the older generation that were that way. but archie really loved edith. he just expressed himself as a real chauvanist. "...then go for it", LOL.
