Never be an Italian mercenary in an army mad out of French horsemen... how about never play medieval while abridging Last Exile?
If I'm not mistaking, this is the hymn the French used during the only period in history when their presence on the battlefield actually meant something: when they were led by a Corsican.
To his credit, that Corsican felt his was as French as anyone else. Napolean can be criticized for a lot of things (like trying to launch a Land Invasion of Russia), but not on his lack of Frenchness, heh.
Um...chivalry isn't that demented. The things people do because of honor and duty to just stand around and get shot...yeah, perhaps...but Chivalry's a big word, which is also gramatically correct, for the phrase "A tendancy for niceness."
Anyway, if someone's watched Don Quixote De La Mancha, you know what I'm talking about. Being nice and courteous to all women is Chivalry. Sitting out in the open for enemies to cap you is dementia.
I'm using the word chivalry as it refers to last exile, but I think it must be a translation error where they should have been saying honour because thier notions of chivalry bare far more resmblance to Bushido than to the fully evolved late medieval code of chivalry.
For instance, apparently according to chivalry a battle should commence with the pointless exchange of fire between marine corps, just like in Bushido, there would be 1 to 1 combat between champions before the main battle.
My understanding is that Chivalry derived from the French word "Chevalier" meaning horseman and referring to the proper social conduct of the elite warrior class that bore that title. On a humorous note "Nice" actually used to be interchangeable with "Stupid" in 17th Century English. "Nasty" meant cheap and effective.
I have always thought that Chivalry meant being so death-wish berserk that you trample your crossbowmen and getting massacred by longbows like the French did at Crecy & Agincour
I would have said never join any part of the French military ever ever ever. They just don't seem to have a grasp of common sense or reality much. You are however more precise, and completely correct Unwardil. I love your work and am a subscriber and I will now wash my nose because I noticed a brown spot :D
Civalry is not ambushing your opponent, attacking at night, starving him out of his rat hole, using booby traps, tourturing prisoners, broadcasting anti-troop propaganda lies, or attacking civilians.
1. Duty to Liege and Countrymen. Basically loyalty and feudal service unto death.
2. Duty to Christians. Being merciful, and fair in combat. Accepting surrenders.
3. Duty to Church. Protect the helpless, be generous, obey the Church.
4. Duty to Noble Ladies. Be gracious and courteous.
There was also a large issue to do with being eager for battle and showing no cowardice. This is where things got all Monty Python on the battlefield.

"if it wasn't for the Grand stream we'd be speaking Slavic long ago". :D
I am only sad that no mention was made regarding any element of inbreeding in the nobility causing dementia like chivalry.

Actually the Code of Chivalry is:
1. Duty to Liege and Countrymen. Basically loyalty and feudal service unto death.
2. Duty to Christians. Being merciful, and fair in combat. Accepting surrenders.
3. Duty to Church. Protect the helpless, be generous, obey the Church.
