i knew steve had "made it" when they used this tune for georgia championship wrestling commercials. augusta ga. home of the godfather of soul ..steve morse and the masters can you think of any 3 more incongruous things to have been nurtured in the same environment.
We used to jam to the Dregs for hours. I loved playing drums along with this song as a mega warmup before a jam session. superb musicians, great composition, and ultra creative.
just to add to the friday rock show comments what a joy to hear this oasis through the week at the time with tommy's dulcit tones promising a stunt filled show !
Ah yes...brings back many great memories indeed of The Friday Rock Show on Radio One with Tommy Vance, who used this great track as the show's theme. When rock music was deserving of the term classic! Ace tune... love it... play loud and enjoy!
I wonder how many remember (or were around) ABC's "Wide World of Sports" in the late 70's & early 80's. Freestyle Frisbee was really taking off then and WWS did a segment featuring Jenz and Erwin Velasquez, using this Dregs tune as the music for it - TOTALLY AWESOME!! Makes me want to spin a Frisbee every time I hear it!
When I take the top off my Corvette, I crank this tune up to the max..Sounds good on the Bose speakers...Top down, hair flappin music!!! Love it, and thanks for posting this!!!
@injungman LOL!!! I went to see them at Chicago Fest in the late 70's and before the show I had a baseball jersey with the words "DO DREGS" on the name plate arcoss the shoulders!
Saw these guys the first time in a tiny hall in Athens GA around in '76 or '77. I've been a big fan ever since. Steve Morse makes it look so easy, and he appears to be having a good time doing it. Deep Purple needs to take a break and let him put the Dregs or the SMB back together and tour.
WHEW!! After all these years of listening to this, it still makes my heart go pitter-pat. I remember buying this LP back in the late 70's. I was totally sky high, dropped the needle on this here first tune and it splattered my brain all over the room. The whole album is awesome. Bands today just focus on looking pretty and pumping out corporate media junk to sell a million records. Who cares if the only know two chords as long as they make the chicks scream and the corporate lawyers rich.
BBC Radio 1 Friday Nights on 275/285 and Stereo FM 88-91, Tommy Vance Friday Rock Show, I presented the same type of show on HBA in mid 80's, between 7-8 pm on Friday called Physiotherapy to Portsmouth Hospitals, same music on 945khz/317mts AM and Radio Relay in the wards. Played same classic stuff like Tommy but on a smaller scale. Love heavy rock/metal.

This was a college staple at Georgia Tech when I was cordoned there in the early 80's. Little Feat & Zeppelin were all going on then, too. Just nice to see some TIGHT musicians.
Before uploading this great song (i was thinking in doing the same with every track of What If, and i will, but at the moment i have lack of time) I didn't expected by far having a comment every day of people who really lived in the moment it were created and released, and having that memorable images and words from the good old years. Thanks to everybody from Madrid!
Killer song and great for Frisbee Freestyling! I learned about this band back in 1980 at PSU, some of the guys on the Ultimate team freestyled. Pryor Hendricks (R.I.P.) was one of the best and loved the Dregs Good Stuff, thanks for posting!!.
Oh, and still have the 8-track that still plays....it's been spliced several times and I still play it in an old stereo in the garage. Got to get some of these on mp3 to put in the cars.
In 78', a senior, small block 400 in a 72' Nova, winding up the rpm"s to Take it off the Top" leaving Chevelle's and hi-po Mustangs behind me in "The Gap" west of town............Fantastic memories!!
These guys blow their wad on this one!I I really like Rod Morgenstein's building bass drum. I wish today's bands had half the fire these guys had. But now just sample, cut and paste. Who cares about practicing eight hours a day like these master musicians did to hone their craft. Hey Dreg dudes, why don't ya'll get together and show the boys how it's done?
Did anybody notice at the 0:18 mark a huge mistake? This does not occur in the recording, nor would Steve Morse in a million years allow it to remain, so it appears to be either a deliberate sabotage or a glitch upon uploading. Just my two cents...
There was an inside joke posted in the credits on this album where they designated Rod Morgenstein with vocals for this song. Well, when Rod played back then he often made groaning throat noises when he's really getting into what he was playing. If you go to 1:12 thru 1:14 you can hear it during his mini solo. Press the headphones agianst your ears and listen carefully.
Absolutely the tightest, most well-rehearsed band I have ever seen live. Every one of them is a virtuoso at his respective instrument. Amazing to watch.
@Bobbythompson65 I saw the Dregs in Boston way back when (1979 or 80) and I couldn't agree more. Their music brought instrumentals to new heights!! Very much ahead of their time... and just as amazing to listen to now, as it was 30 years ago. People should realize that some of the best music has already been recorded, they just have to find it, or have it find them!!
for there are no jazz/rock bands who spit out complex orchestrated lines as rapidly and precisely as this group. Having already seen the Mahavishnu Orchestra a few years before them and Return to Forever around this time(1977)...neither of them were as tight or complex as these guys. Well rehearsed indeed!
