Your videos are very informative. You explain like a Phd professor which is nice. If you make more videos about agriculture technology then that would be great. How are the seeds of broccoli obtained by commercial companies that sell to farmers? Do they grow over the bud or somewhere else ?
Adding: having a monoculture like this broccoli field is especially difficult without chemicals. Which is kind of why "organic" is so labor-intensive. You can gain fertilization and pest control by mixing plant types, but you lose the labor benefits of a monoculture. Whether or not there is "dirt" available and whether it is "affordable" are different.
And I can't harvest my broccoli at 3, but this does make me want to rush home and get it before late evening! I'm expecting some today :)
If I may participate in the previouis conversation about organics, I think both sides are correct in a way. The people and land NOW used for growing food could not do it without chemicals, GMOs, etc. If everybody had a backyard garden, though and/or more land were returned to growing food.... maybe so. I'm not sure. We also are going to experience more water issues and technology will be needed to manage that. (I have both modern ag and home-grown organic experience, BTW).
@justlivemyway I let them go as an experiment and they did make good heads. But I only had a few days of good green broccoli before they started to flower and go to seed. I'm not sure I would do it again since bugs and spiders get in there and its hard to wash it all out. I got broccoli starts from a local garden shop.
@justlivemyway About 0.00001 acres of broccoli. If you look at my channel I have a tiny little garden and planted 4 broccolis for about $1.29. I will spread my tomatoes out more and grow more beans next year. Broccoli is tasty but easy to find at the store. Good tomatoes are IMPOSSIBLE to find lol. Good luck with your farm!
I planted broccoli for the first time this year and it's doing wonderful! Can't wait for harvest time, This video was great I learned so much! Thanks!
LOL!! Organic is crap? Growing without chemical pollutants is crap? Growing without artificiality is crap? The engineering and design of nature's plants and food bearers is a crappy design? What? Either you're a flaming troll with an agenda or you are sadly misinformed. Who says an industrial centralized farming system is needed, or even beneficial, to feed the world? Read a book or two that don't conform to your preconceived ideas for a little perspective. Cheers.
@Eraser7622 but it is true that half of the world food production would not be possible without artificial nitrogen fertilisers. I'm not saying that organics is crap, but to dismiss the benefits humanity enjoys from conventional agriculture would be equally as ignorant
You say that, but it isn't true! Why would anybody need artificial nitrogen fertilizer? There's enough $h!t produced annually to fertilize every crop on the planet a few times over at least! And organic (natural) soil enhancers are also in abundant supply. Artificial as a word should not enter our food chain, period.. especially our agricultural food chain. It isn't needed and is only there to generate profit and reinforce corporate controls.. some might even say fascist.
@Eraser7622 I wish that this was the case, but there is a lot of literature that suggests that the global population would not be this large without artificial fertilisers, let alone other non-organic practices.
@Eraser7622 get on google books and look up 'Enriching the earth' by Vaclav Smil. Read paragraphs 3 and 4 of the page xv of this book. There are a number of other scientific publications on the impact that the haber-bosch process has had on the globe. Its clear that we simply would not have enough food to feed the world without chemicals, especially as we approach a population of 9 billion by 2050
@scmorris66 How long should I leave it covered in ice before I cut off the leaves? Can I store it in a root celler with leaves on, and how long will it store in a root celler? Thanks :-)

Its getting hot here (80-95 F) and my broccoli has huuuuuge leaves, but no floret. Is it too late? Should I just pull it up and plant beans? =(

@bradkrit
So what did you do with your broccoli ? Did you pull them out to plant Beans ?
Where do you obtain seeds for broccoli?

@bradkrit
How many acres do you plant broccoli?
How much does the tissue cultured started for broccoli cost each ?
I think its a risky vegetable unless good infrastructure is available. Even though I am trying my first Broccoli plantation this month :)
Thanks for the prompt reply :)

Interesting!! And to think not a single solution involved adding chemicals or artificiality at any stage. GREAT!!

Good luck. Remember to ice promptly and move out of the sun as soon as possible to prevent water loss.
