This is Neil's play on Oscar Wilde's quote from one of his plays..something like "we're all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars". Since the song is about suicide, think of someone looking to higher things and thoughts to help themselves (the stars), then think of someone on a ledge looking down (to the cars)..ie. someone who has given up hope
Holy crap on a popsicle stick. My favourite Rush song, and I can't believe I've NEVER heard a live version of this one. They're not playing this song on their current tour, and they should! Sounds absolutely INCREDIBLE!!!
It's easy to tell the difference......One shakes alot in a nervous fit a all times and yells "SHARON!" and the other wears old converse sneakers and plays with various vending machines behind him on stage.
This is my all-time favourite Rush song. As for the debate over Geddy's voice, I'll admit that I wasn't crazy about it at first, but I grew like appreciate it, and even like it. He's a great vocalist.
While true that Geddy and Neil are the *BEST* in their respective instruments, something that is often overlooked is Alex and his brilliance on the guitar. Unfortunately there are many good guitarists so he is overshadowed by the other two, but if you listen and watch you'll see that he is a virtuoso himself.
Rush is the greatest band of all time, and this is my favourite song of theirs. I'm 21, and not many people my age know much about them, which is sad. I've gotten some of my friends into them, though, and this is one of the songs I use to do so.
More kids our age need to get into all this great music. In 20 years bands like Rush will still be loved while todays bands like Fall Out Boy wont be remembered at all.
That's gotta be the dumbest thing, I've ever heard, sorry. Rush are the fifth most platinum and gold awarded rock band in the history. These guys have sold over 40 fucking million records.
I'm 19, and the only RUSH song my friends know is YYZ from Guitar Hero 2. They may still have fans from many years ago, but they certainly aren't appreciated by the younger crowd today. RUSH's musicianship, technical ability, lyrics, and overall decency puts all other bands to shame.
yeh i know what you mean but compared to overated bands like zeppelin though theyre still great and all the classic rock bands, rush don't get mentioned a lot lets be honest but they should do and i think theyre getting big again now coz of the new album which is ACE! :D
The guitar is really good in the mix, but the bass and rhythm are just a hair lacking. Not bad, 2 be sure, just not allquite there. I think they could have used just a few more woofers and subwoofers...I mean, that's a HUGE crowd..
nonsense, quiet is when you go out and hear birds sing. There's nothing quiet about vocals and guitar.
Maybe you mean sparse, or minimal, but definitely not quiet. Let me point this out: when the bass plays by itself, sounds ok. But when guitar and drums join in, it gets lost. This means it's poorly eq'd and maybe not well amplified, thereby, inmyop, necessitating a better sound sytstem.
quiet and loud is a function of what's referred to in musican's terms as 'dynamics'. If frequencies from the crash cymbals or the guitar or the pedals is missing, then it's 'thin', or 'minimal', but again, it's not 'quieter', unless you mean it in a poetic sense
I've listened to all of Rush in Rio, and it still seems to me that most of their songs are louder. I don't mean by much, I just mean I think they play a little softer for most of this song.
The engineer's job is to keep all the needles, or meters, in an ideal zone. If it's too soft they'll just turn it up so that it conforms to a certain level. So, if rush DIDN'T bang away at drums or guitars as they usually do, the engineer should have pushed up the levels.
I saw these dudes on the snakes and arrows tour in st. louis and it was FUCKING AWESOME! not only was the music incredible there lasers and fire was fucking incredible! the one i went to was 2 months ago but it still was fucking awesome!
i definatly agree they should be in the rock n' roll hall of fame there is 50 million good reasons why especiaaly the fact that they are the greatest band ever
How, at 35 million records, is Rush one of the most commercially successful bands? The reason that they have so many gold and platinum albums is because they have made so many!
Yes this song is about young people commiting suicide.Better still if you get the movie DEAD POETS SOCIETY and start playing the song just before the young boy commits suicide it fits so perfectly that its brilliant!.
This song is about teen suicide, and has nothing to do with Christ other than the fact that its used as a swear word in this song. You uptight zealots who misinterpret everything are the reason for so much evil in the name of rightousness. There are billions of people that have lived and died who never even heard of Jesus. Did they all go to hell?
Geddy is Jewish, though I don't know if he's a practicing one. Neil strikes me as an agnostic, but I could be wrong. I don't know about Alex. But I don't think this song is about Jesus.
As far as I know the members of Rush are not Christians, but Neil could have written this song about Jesus. Who knows? I don't. Personally, I dont really care about lyrics and what they mean. All I know is that Jesus is Lord and Savior and that He died and rose again for all of us. Anyone that wants to disagree with me, well let me just say you are in for a rude awakening.
Shut up with your stupid religious mumbo jumbo... Vishnu is laughing her multiple hands off at you! Buddah would have to say, you're not very convincing. Christ agrees with Apollo and Zeus... Knock it off... It's RUSH... Just enjoy the music.
yea jesus was a real person. he was the dude who fixed my car last week. no, really though jesus is just a carpenter. im catholic and i find it EXTREMELY hard to believe that God has a son. Why? because how is it possible for their to be two 'gods'. think about it. think hard before you jump at me saying something stupid. if God is perfect, he is ONE entity...and he is everything. he just simply cannot have a son.
I am a huge rush fan but it has to be admitted that sometimes Neil can become a little pretentious in his writing as well as incredulous. I respect Dr. Peart for whatever it is that he believes despite the fact that i disagree with some things. I will always love rush for their musical talent but needless to say i don't listen to them for theologic enlightenment as me and Neil or on different wavelengths.
i understand that jesus mysteriously had the same following that mythological heroes like hercales had (i know...i cant remember what his real name is, but in greek mythology his name IS NOT hercules), i for one, wouldnt care if he performed miracles or he rose from the dead, or was the son of god...i liked his correction of the old testament(which i think is pretty fucked up) and i liked what he had to say about forgiveness and honesty, theres not a lot that came out of his mouth that was bad
Rush was and always will be my favorite band. But, for Neil to say Christ committed suicide or was an example for others to commit suicide is ignorant. Jesus is the Messiah because He fought our fight for us, conquered death by His resurrection, paid our sins for us. I think Neil completely misunderstands Jesus' mission.
There's too many people that just simply latch on to a perception or explanation of Jesus that they believe is right, never questioning enough to make up their own minds. The fact that we are able to doubt that Jesus was a real person is a start, what did Jesus write himself? were there not only ever accounts of his life supposedly 'recorded'?
jesus was a real person, i dont know why you insist that the dude didnt walk the earth, he did, i understand that youre a genius because youre able to question things, but saying that a figure didnt exist that almost every major religion and historian said existed is bogus
as for jesus, im not sure why he didnt write anything, i mean you could look at it from the perspective that he was doing the teaching instead of writing shit down, i personally think that he was a little busy doin shit to write anything, but maybe that's ignorant of me
"Christ, what have you done?" has nothing to do with Jesus. It's a saying. There is no hidden biblical message to the song. Saying "Christ" in a phrase such as this does not actually allude to Jesus. Get over it.
and your a fag Binfrog has the right point. just because it says christ you guys jump all over it and start this controversy over a SONG BY THE GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME! JUST STOP TALKING ABOUT IT AND LISTEN TO THE MASTERPEICE
The gospel stories are no more historic than the Genesis creation story is scientific. What is this concrete evidence for the existence of Jesus? Don't let myself get brainwashed?! So i should choose to believe a mythical, contradictory, ruthless, inhuman, indoctrinating and inaccurate ancient text over the solid foundation of developing, changing science? being brainwashed is an essential part of religion, not freethought.
theres nothing that disproves god or jesus, even historians realize that jesus was a person that existed, whether or not he was the messiah is where it becomes religious
What proves God? There are uncanny similarities in Ancient Folklore, Greek and Roman mythologies, and in pagansim to the Story of Jesus. The actual lifetime of Jesus is horribly inaccurate, there's a huge gap in which he's recorded as a boy, then comes back as an adult 30-40 years later. What happened?
ive always wondered why they left that portion of his life out of the picture, i always assumed that it would help people understand him more, i doubt there could have been something that happened to severely warp his image
people here should do more research. Jesus may not have even existed. Check the film the 'God that wasn't there'. Similarities to mythology, paganism and Folklore are irrefutable. The power of literature in this world and the power of the human mind are also amazing, considering those who have believed that was what gave them the absolute truth, humans are amazing.
Actually the fact that he existed has been already proofed scientifically, the big question is was he really a messiah or a God? Don't let yourself get brainwashed, you can be an atheist if you want, but still belive that Jesus existed, don't belive he wasn't God if you don't want
Jesus never committed suicide and never did he die a martyr death. He neither was crucified, nor did he die in the first place. He was elevated by God Almighty to the Heavens with body and soul without having any single injury.
You are right. It's just like him saying "Gosh Darn it" or something... anyone who is saying the other meanings is just pushing some sort of adgenda.... knock it off you kooks.
Christ is, after all, probably history's most famous martyr. In the lines leading up to that final line, the writer is advising anyone contemplating suicide (or martyrdom) that there is nothing glorious in killing yourself. Finally, in that last line, the writer exhorts Christ himself, for it is his martyrdom that makes suicide an appealing option for some people--i.e., "what have you done, Jesus, when by your example you make people think martydom is OK?"
First you have to clear the difference between suicide and martyrdom; Martyrdom is when you give your life for a cause, which is, in the mind of the martyr, always good. Suicide is a coward way for escaping from personal issues. That leads to the conclusion that: martyrdom is most of the times a heroic and good thing. Suicide on the other hand, is never good. Christ gave his life to save us, so that is not bad at all is it?
No Greater love is there than this... that one willingly lay down his life for a friend. Thus no greater SELFISH love is there than to lay down yer life for yerslef in a suicide... One leads to heaven, the other is a one way ticket to the other place... Good post. Thanks for making sense here.
Since Jesus is the most recognizable human in history to commit suicide, i think it's very appropriate to mention him as an example. An example of what not to do. Suicide is not noble, nor was jesus for doing it. I hardly think he's blaming suicide on Jesus. There are many reason why people commit suicide. If anything he's blaming the bible for characterizing it as noble.

I'm not exactly sure why they aren't in, but I can guess two reasons:
1.) Rolling Stone Magazine, which has a well-documented dislike for them, is somehow hindering their induction.
2.) In a way, they've never quite been mainstream (despite their success and influence), though I don't see how that alone should keep them out.
Ashiman12 4 years ago
Don't forget the HOF are snobs about prog in general.Genesis,Yes,King Crimson et al aren't in it either.

Reasons Rush should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame:
1.) All three of them are immensely talented, legends on their respective instruments.
2.) Overall, they're one of the most commercially successful bands of all times, with the 5th most gold and platinum records of any band.
3.) They've been a major influence to countless later bands, not least Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, and Dream Theater.
4.) They've been together for over thirty years, under the same line-up.
Ashiman12 4 years ago 3
How, at 35 million records, is Rush one of the most commercially successful bands? The reason that they have so many gold and platinum albums is because they have made so many!

I will always love rush for their musical talent but needless to say i don't listen to them for theologic enlightenment as me and Neil or on different wavelengths.

Christians should see the film 'The god that wasn't there', and check out the video 'the gods jesus copied', a short clip from the film.

i understand that jesus mysteriously had the same following that mythological heroes like hercales had (i know...i cant remember what his real name is, but in greek mythology his name IS NOT hercules), i for one, wouldnt care if he performed miracles or he rose from the dead, or was the son of god...i liked his correction of the old testament(which i think is pretty fucked up) and i liked what he had to say about forgiveness and honesty, theres not a lot that came out of his mouth that was bad

Rush was and always will be my favorite band. But, for Neil to say Christ committed suicide or was an example for others to commit suicide is ignorant. Jesus is the Messiah because He fought our fight for us, conquered death by His resurrection, paid our sins for us. I think Neil completely misunderstands Jesus' mission.

lots of people dont understand it, they just get mad at the church and blame jesus for shit that a lot of conservative people do
fizik2112 5 years ago
There's too many people that just simply latch on to a perception or explanation of Jesus that they believe is right, never questioning enough to make up their own minds. The fact that we are able to doubt that Jesus was a real person is a start, what did Jesus write himself? were there not only ever accounts of his life supposedly 'recorded'?

so are u 4 Jesus or aainst Him?

jesus was a real person, i dont know why you insist that the dude didnt walk the earth, he did, i understand that youre a genius because youre able to question things, but saying that a figure didnt exist that almost every major religion and historian said existed is bogus

as for jesus, im not sure why he didnt write anything, i mean you could look at it from the perspective that he was doing the teaching instead of writing shit down, i personally think that he was a little busy doin shit to write anything, but maybe that's ignorant of me

"Christ, what have you done?" has nothing to do with Jesus. It's a saying. There is no hidden biblical message to the song. Saying "Christ" in a phrase such as this does not actually allude to Jesus. Get over it.

You're completely wrong. Duh.

MightyMaxbass 5 years ago
theres nothing that disproves god or jesus, even historians realize that jesus was a person that existed, whether or not he was the messiah is where it becomes religious
fizik2112 5 years ago
What proves God? There are uncanny similarities in Ancient Folklore, Greek and Roman mythologies, and in pagansim to the Story of Jesus. The actual lifetime of Jesus is horribly inaccurate, there's a huge gap in which he's recorded as a boy, then comes back as an adult 30-40 years later. What happened?
MightyMaxbass 5 years ago
yeah...look up joseph campbell...its called the heros journey, it applies to neo and a whole host of other characters in mythology

ive always wondered why they left that portion of his life out of the picture, i always assumed that it would help people understand him more, i doubt there could have been something that happened to severely warp his image
fizik2112 5 years ago
people here should do more research.

He was elevated by God Almighty to the Heavens with body and soul without having any single injury.

except for the part where jesus show thomas his scars, what about that?

Oh end it with the religious discusssions. You aren't going to change anyone else's minds, and we don't want to hear it.
He means "Christ" as an exclamation. "Christ! What have you done??" It wouldn't make sense otherwise.
designerdeth 5 years ago
You are right. It's just like him saying "Gosh Darn it" or something... anyone who is saying the other meanings is just pushing some sort of adgenda.... knock it off you kooks.

hahaha maybe he means Christ! what have you done? anyway, Neil can say what he wants!

ShaneTerry90 5 years ago

RachelFaithAnderson 5 years ago
isn't it strange that in 2112, the character martyrs himself?
fizik2112 5 years ago
Since Jesus is the most recognizable human in history to commit suicide, i think it's very appropriate to mention him as an example. An example of what not to do. Suicide is not noble, nor was jesus for doing it. I hardly think he's blaming suicide on Jesus. There are many reason why people commit suicide. If anything he's blaming the bible for characterizing it as noble.

Suicide is Selfish, Self love, and is always an evil of which the Bible has many examples of how it is wrong.

he means jesus christ what have you done man, as a saying
LetaherBabies 5 years ago
exactly...your point is a truth in this wilderness of stupidity...it is written as an exclamation...like "JESUS CHRIST MAN!!! WTF? HAVE YOU DONE?"
vaportrails44 5 years ago
I love Rush, but Neil's blaming of suicide on Christ is full of BS. More Satan worshippers commit suicide than Christians.
69199 5 years ago
First, it's not about Christ- it's used as an expression of "surprise," or in this case, disgust. Second, do you have firm evidence to support that?
