  • These are fun to study as bassists but as a listener I think I prefer the actual Cello which isn't to knock this performance. He is an amazing player and plays it well.

  • Where would I find a bow like that..

  • what bass is this anyways?

its seems to have the shape of a testore?

  • "which he hopes will help encourage student bass players to explore Baroque playing and Bach's music in particular"

    .....mission accomplished

  • Perfect work!

  • I had to learn the basics of this instrument as a music major, i kept playing two strings at one time, but i did enough to pass the class

  • just looking at this gives me carpal tunnel syndrome!but great work fantastique!

  • Who disliked this? What's the problem. His technique isn't good enough for you? What?

  • That double bass must be at least 100 years old.

  • The player's music is amazing, but this video sounds not so good. I thought they Europeans got tonmeisters, what happened....

  • Kra que SOM LIIMPO :O. Muito bom .

  • shit, i am going to go practice

  • I never knew Tatars can play instruments

  • he holds his bow in such an interesting way

  • ? French bow grip, he holds a bit higher than regular, but, it's fine.

  • @ReignzOfBrainz looks like a baroque bow to me, as the tip and the frog of the bow suggests. And thus the higher grip as well.

  • @flaminess its called the baroque style

  • @flaminess cuz its baroque

  • @flaminess Generally Baroque music is a lot more mellow and softer compared to slightly less older pieces of music and that is why, in the time period, this bow hold was often used. It created a graceful and mellow tone but lacked a loud sound.

  • @bryanfede123 If you have ever held a baroque bow you would know that it is quite difficult to hold it french style because the design was for the viola da gamba which holds the bow underhand moderately similar to a german style bass bow but only when you look at the grips. I tried playing viola da gamba and holding the bow was quite difficult and i play german style. I also have a masterclass with him this sunday

  • @flaminess It's not a modern bow. The bow he's playing is of the style used during the Baroque era.

  • @flaminess: I was just thinking the same thing. He is wonderful, though, isn't he?

  • @flaminess I would assume it has it purpose, seeing that cello bow is shorter (generally, I know person who plays virtuoso cello and bass, and uses one bow for both of them. Maybe it is because it was really expensive bow... Dunno) But I would guess that i so he could get a closer tough to the instrument, since he is kinda playing like a cello in this case, even it is a Contr.bass

  • @flaminess It's a Baroque bow. That's why. It's held much higher up than a normal french style bow. The higher up with the baroque gives the better dexterity for your playing, especially on a cello piece as complex as this one.

  • Oh, to have started before 46! And what a lovely bass, also! sigh.

  • Thats a beautiful bass, theres nothing like string instruments. <3

  • I would do anything for this guy to be my teacher......

  • It sounds so different in A Major :]

  • Mind-blowing.

  • wow i am a bass player and i will say, his position changes are absolutely amazing, with most bass player you can tell when they change positions but this guy is just co fluid and perfect. i someday hope to be this good.

  • @boastingkitty he does, however, in higher positions tend not to lift his arm. he sometimes even touches the wood, which is, by my teacher's opinion one of the worst mistakes in 'posture' (i don't know the right word, i'm Swiss) you can make, since touching the instrument takes away richness and fullness of the sound. not lifting your arm also tends to make higher positions more uncomfortable imo.

but i agree that his position changes are really good. and i also wish to be that good someday :D

  • @highway788 Ich bin aus Island, aber ich spreche ein wenig Deutsch und Sie machen einen guten Punkt.

  • the hand!! jajaja

  • Can I get the cheat code for this XD

Seriously, awesome interpretation! I wish i could play it this well

  • @CellistAdam I think it is ² "hardwork_again_and_again" xD

  • stunning. A master in action.

  • Beautiful playing. Lovely tone. No jive histrionics. True understanding of the architecture of the piece. And, ironically, so rare for a bassist ...a wonderful harmonic sense.

  • @Octobass Is it really rare for a bassist to to have a good harmonic sense?

  • @Trioptio

  • Masterful.....people have no idea how difficult it is to play the bass in tune, with anywhere this speed....with expression....

    BRAVO..!!!

  • Wonderful playing! Can you tell us a little bit about Mr. Ibragimov's bass? I love the lower register!

  • Bravo

  • Violins and piccolos got nothing on the classic string bass; Great video.

  • Bravo! I enjoy a lot watching this performance

  • Does he play in original tune?

  • @leolinklima yeah

  • 5 times no !? That must be from angry cello players ;)

  • @uprightbassmatt im a cello player, currently studying this piece, and i wish i can give him 10 likes! its impressive how well he performs it, then again, he must be one of the best bassists in the entire world. so, no they're from angry uh.... violin-makers that dont make basses! lol

  • I'm a technical metal bassist who is going to school for bass next year (switching from trombone) and have to use a bow. I'm pretty stoked to learn how to do this.

  • @Beholdthesharktopus good luck.. I thought I was a bassist until I started using a bow too.

  • @CosmikDebris7 I think I'm a bassist now.....

  • Absolutely sublime. I wish he'd finished it off with the low note though. Such a tease, makes you think he's gonna give you the ear throbber and he leaves you with the double stop.

  • What kind of microphone is that?

  • Basses have such a nice earthy tone... I think its because it's the closest thing to playing a tree.

  • @Ijjycoyote An upside down tree -- the Cb is tuned in P4s which as we all know are nothing but inverted, i,e, 'upside down' much more stable 5ths. Which is also why the Cb 'sounds' an octave lower (upside down?) than written.

  • Truly amazing.. I'm playing this in audition today, hope some day I can play as good as you

  • Shows just how awkward Cello music can be for the Bass.

  • Rinat ibragimov is one of my favorite bassist, also my total favorite for bach interpretation.

On a side note, those edge bumpers on his bass are enormous!

  • to those 4(current) cellists that disliked this, put your toys down and try out a bass. you will understand that your toy is no longer worth doing anything with. toy= cello

  • Is there a way to contact Rinat regarding a pedagogical project?

    thank you!

  • I love when bass is played so that every note sound good and like they have a meaning, all the prejudice just gets knocked away and the bass opens up to be this incredibly beautiful instrument that sounds warm.

I strive with my pöllman and german bow setup to play bach like Rinat does, all the brutality gone, so that its no longer just an exercise or just an auditionpiece. But something people actually want to listen to, and enjoy

  • inspiring!!!!

  • down in the ghetto, thats how we hold our bow lol.

  • Thats fantastic! what is that bow your using? It looks like a baroque bow. And what bass is that? The combination is stupendous, and the playing is even more so!

  • wow, very very nice! that is all i can say.

  • Stunning! I was actually looking for cello performances but this one stopped me in my tracks.

  • Amazing.

  • Some people just comment as if RInat were another normal guy with great skills at bass. Do you get to the meaning of this piece? Behind technichal difficulties, barroque's articulation is hard to take the best of it. This interpretation (no matter this unique instrument) is superb. I think the same with Rinat's Koussevitzky in YouTube. They keep asking things just as "Ey dude, what's that bass?" That bass is borrowed from LSO, I believe.

  • oh shit, this is good.

  • Perfect. In every way.

  • Totally wonderful!

Be sure to watch each movement. They are all beautifully played.

  • Nice performance :) Are you tuned to 5ths?

  • The bass is much mother like than others

  • This is very beautiful. What key is used to play this?

  • @JoseVega1817

I think it's in G Major, look at the opening scale. The original is in C.

  • Great playing. Love to be playing in the LSO one day alongside such a great bassist as Rinat

  • HOLY COW!

  • While you're playing, do you find your right hand squeeze the hair on the bow and releasing tension. I'd imagine that the way you hold the bow that you could make finite changes to bow hair tension and you could actually use that to your advantage. Like on low notes you could loosen your tension to make low notes easier to bow and for high notes increase the tension in the a hair to make it easier to bow. Just a theory though.

  • de beuté justesse de le son

  • @ rpgEvilshenlong, @ KISMOV; ...thanks for your kind words, right now I've found a music instructor and I'm working on reading and finding notes and scales....

  • Absolutely stunning. The baroque bow really helps to bring out the character.

  • Hello, I am 27 and I just wonna star Double Bass...Is it possible at my age???? I don't want to be a jazz man or and expert to be on stage, I just want to play it for my hearts sake, I'm crazy about it...please answer, I need your advise...thanks a lot.

  • @VAHEABED

Its never too late an learning double bass at higher age is a bit easier than learning the other bowed instruments. I was 18 when I started playing. Just try it!

  • @VAHEABED

you just need a teacher and some music education of you can't read the notes, keys

    that's all

  • I was looking at what instrument I should learn, something I've always wanted to do. I love Baroque and I love Jazz and what better instrument to represent both than the bass? It's so versatile. I had no idea you could play a solo like this. Very inspirational. Now I begin the long journey o becoming a bassist.

  • pure madness.

  • @Organette Its a baroque bass bow

  • Just noticed how he holds the bow.

    Interesting.

Very nice capturing of a great musician. Thanks for uploading.

  • I love that LSO and their members are so keen on reading and responding to the uploader comments. For a young bass players like myself it's like I am able to interview my idols. Youtube and LSO both kicks ass!

  • This is one of my favorite videos on YouTube. The Bach Cello Suites are like ballet for the left hand. The LSO is lucky to have him.

  • Great Playing!

    Bravo!

    Is your bass a Grancino?

  • Does anyone know what tuning he is in?

  • @Natessellin He is playing in solo tuning

  • Very perfect !

The best instrument is the double bass !

  • Very nice.

I'm curious who made his bow; anyone know? (I hope this hasn't been covered already...)

  • Holy hell man, this is amazing!!!! Is that a period bow for gamba or some sort of mock-period bow adapted for the modern double bass?

  • You make Bach proud.

  • You really break a sweat playing Bach on a bass.

  • Awesome!

  • has rinat made recordings of any of the suites on cds?

  • i can't figure out how he does the octaves in the middle section. does anyone know?

  • I watch this video almost everyday wishing I could play it like that. I want to learn Bach from this guy one day.

  • I don't think I can play it that fast on the cello : |

  • I think you play the suites on bass better than anyone I've ever heard. Unbelievable

  • bravo rinat ! ! !

  • Thats a period bow, which was held further up the stick.

  • Beautiful.

I thought you always have to hold the bow by the frog like the teachers always said...?

  • tooooooooooooo clean sounds !!! :) lovely

  • I would kill to have a bass like that! Such astounding beauty in tone. But of course the incredibly skill of the artist can't be overlooked.

  • Bravisssimo Rinat !!!

    Beautifuly musical and stunningly perfect.

  • I want this on tuba!!!

  • i missed annies performance AND i hoped to c a show w you as i always miss it..sorry..i got there but everyone was packing up and leaving. sincerely sorry. i was facebook artsculpting 24 hrs nonstop this time so, wuz tired, sorry.

  • Ones hands must be strong and supple

  • Give the man a medal!

  • Outstanding! You and Edgar Meyer are my Bach bass heroes however Meyer plays Bach more romantically and that's why I prefer Your version :) Beautiful !!! Pure perfection.

  • bass is the sound of mother earth beautiful

  • My deep respect! P. Iuga

  • aaammmaaxxxinnggg omg.

strange bow hold. but man he's good.

  • he holding the bow like a baroque musician, and yes: the man is really good... never saw that

  • Great instrument!!and player!

  • i can personally tell you, that this is one of the hardest pieces a bassist can play

  • great.....its some beautyfull

  • the pitch sounds like cello lol

  • fantastic.great musical understanding

  • Solo Tuning I believe (each string up one whole step)

  • So, since the 1st note is an "A" harmonic on the G, err, A- string, I would assume he's tuned in 5th's??

  • Apparently the best bassist in the world don't use French or German. They just grab the middle and kick major ass.

  • couldnt have said it better myself

  • it's a baroque bow. i think he usually uses french....

  • @crumikins lol thats obviously a baroque bow

  • For that to be "obvious" you would need to have knowledge of baroque instruments... I don't think anyone can be expected to have an inherent knowledge of something like that.

  • @crumikins HAHAHA! good one

  • @crumikins Looks like an overhand(french) hold to me.

  • @crumikins

that's a baroque type of bow

that's the way to hold baroque bow

  • @crumikins

it's the baroque bowing method. different but no less effective and beautiful

  • @crumikins Yep >> so PRO>> baroque bows are SERIOUSLY hard to get used to=0=

  • Could someone further explain his bowhold?

  • It looks like he is using a baroque bow!

  • This is beatiful, thank you... I am a double bass mexican student, hope one day i'll become as good as you, just one question, which strings do you use??

  • Hello, thanks for your comment. Rinat uses Pirastro Eudoxa Solo (covered gut strings) in this video. Best of luck with your studies!

  • Beyond historical performance or double bass playing, this is a real revelation to listen to Bach's music, I forget about instruments and styles and realise the real beauty and love of this music, depth of harmony and sutility of detail, cannot be more inspired, thank you Rinat, this IS really fantastic!!!

  • Brilliant playing! You make it look so easy, LOL. I am inspired, thank you

    Mr. Ibragimov.

  • the way he approaches his fingerings is really quite neat because he just has a knack for finding ways to make it work even though it might look sort of strange.

  • I'm really impressed by this! The excerpts by this same man, were not impressive, but this is quite good!!! (except for that last trill)

  • Phenomenal! Very interesting!

  • Masterful, I love the live feel and the tiny imperfections, makes it so real. Amazing job, I envy your ability at my only playing 5 years with a bow. Thanks for the inspiration!

  • Wonderful performance. Very interesting way to hold the bow. I'm going to try to see if it works for me. :)

  • Before you go and try a new bow hold, be aware that this is not a regular bass bow, but rather a baroque bow. In the baroque era bows were actually held like that, so I wouldn't recommend it with a regular bass bow. I'm a violist, not a bassist, but I certainly wouldn't recommend for a violinist or violist to hold their normal bows in the same fashion so i would imagine the same principle applies for bass.

  • it's about time

  • Beautiful.
