These are fun to study as bassists but as a listener I think I prefer the actual Cello which isn't to knock this performance. He is an amazing player and plays it well.
@flaminess Generally Baroque music is a lot more mellow and softer compared to slightly less older pieces of music and that is why, in the time period, this bow hold was often used. It created a graceful and mellow tone but lacked a loud sound.
@bryanfede123 If you have ever held a baroque bow you would know that it is quite difficult to hold it french style because the design was for the viola da gamba which holds the bow underhand moderately similar to a german style bass bow but only when you look at the grips. I tried playing viola da gamba and holding the bow was quite difficult and i play german style. I also have a masterclass with him this sunday
@flaminess I would assume it has it purpose, seeing that cello bow is shorter (generally, I know person who plays virtuoso cello and bass, and uses one bow for both of them. Maybe it is because it was really expensive bow... Dunno) But I would guess that i so he could get a closer tough to the instrument, since he is kinda playing like a cello in this case, even it is a Contr.bass
@flaminess It's a Baroque bow. That's why. It's held much higher up than a normal french style bow. The higher up with the baroque gives the better dexterity for your playing, especially on a cello piece as complex as this one.
wow i am a bass player and i will say, his position changes are absolutely amazing, with most bass player you can tell when they change positions but this guy is just co fluid and perfect. i someday hope to be this good.
@boastingkitty he does, however, in higher positions tend not to lift his arm. he sometimes even touches the wood, which is, by my teacher's opinion one of the worst mistakes in 'posture' (i don't know the right word, i'm Swiss) you can make, since touching the instrument takes away richness and fullness of the sound. not lifting your arm also tends to make higher positions more uncomfortable imo.
but i agree that his position changes are really good. and i also wish to be that good someday :D
Beautiful playing. Lovely tone. No jive histrionics. True understanding of the architecture of the piece. And, ironically, so rare for a bassist ...a wonderful harmonic sense.
@uprightbassmatt im a cello player, currently studying this piece, and i wish i can give him 10 likes! its impressive how well he performs it, then again, he must be one of the best bassists in the entire world. so, no they're from angry uh.... violin-makers that dont make basses! lol
I'm a technical metal bassist who is going to school for bass next year (switching from trombone) and have to use a bow. I'm pretty stoked to learn how to do this.
Absolutely sublime. I wish he'd finished it off with the low note though. Such a tease, makes you think he's gonna give you the ear throbber and he leaves you with the double stop.
@Ijjycoyote An upside down tree -- the Cb is tuned in P4s which as we all know are nothing but inverted, i,e, 'upside down' much more stable 5ths. Which is also why the Cb 'sounds' an octave lower (upside down?) than written.
to those 4(current) cellists that disliked this, put your toys down and try out a bass. you will understand that your toy is no longer worth doing anything with. toy= cello
I love when bass is played so that every note sound good and like they have a meaning, all the prejudice just gets knocked away and the bass opens up to be this incredibly beautiful instrument that sounds warm.
I strive with my pöllman and german bow setup to play bach like Rinat does, all the brutality gone, so that its no longer just an exercise or just an auditionpiece. But something people actually want to listen to, and enjoy
Thats fantastic! what is that bow your using? It looks like a baroque bow. And what bass is that? The combination is stupendous, and the playing is even more so!
Some people just comment as if RInat were another normal guy with great skills at bass. Do you get to the meaning of this piece? Behind technichal difficulties, barroque's articulation is hard to take the best of it. This interpretation (no matter this unique instrument) is superb. I think the same with Rinat's Koussevitzky in YouTube. They keep asking things just as "Ey dude, what's that bass?" That bass is borrowed from LSO, I believe.
While you're playing, do you find your right hand squeeze the hair on the bow and releasing tension. I'd imagine that the way you hold the bow that you could make finite changes to bow hair tension and you could actually use that to your advantage. Like on low notes you could loosen your tension to make low notes easier to bow and for high notes increase the tension in the a hair to make it easier to bow. Just a theory though.
@ rpgEvilshenlong, @ KISMOV; ...thanks for your kind words, right now I've found a music instructor and I'm working on reading and finding notes and scales....
