I want to start listening Mingus, but I want to make sure I find a good first record of his for me to listen to, you know? Also, I see Hubert Laws records in the stores pretty often, but don't know much at all about the guy. As usual, I'm not that good on my jazz =/ but one thing i DO know is that Sam Rivers sleeve is BADASS! Safe travels on your way to St. Loius! - Tim
@timothyjohnhenderson I think it's fairly safe to say that any Mingus is good Mingus.....he's widely referred to as one of the finest composers in jazz. However, when Duke Ellington was the person before you, it's hard to get noticed! Thanks for watching!
@McSoappy Maybe sometime in the future you can post up a video for me with your thoughts on mingus, showing your collection, and some recommendations for a newbie like myself.
@timothyjohnhenderson I will certainly try to do that. In the mean time, you should check out Teddy's Jazz Starter Kit video, it changed my way of looking at things.
Killer finds. I'd maim for a copy of that Hubert Laws record. I found a couple of his CTI albums earlier this year and I like them alot, One is jazzy and the other a bit commercial.
I revisited Electric Ladyland last year and it was better than ever. I never really knew how good the writing was until I sat down and gave it a good listen. Thanks David~
@Paneeks1960 Yeah Electric Ladyland seems like a forgotten record at times from Hendrix, but it cannot be ignored. As you know it's a fantastic piece of history! Hope all is well man!
Killer. Excellent finds man! Mingus, Dolphy, Blakey, Rivers, Gillespie and Hendrix...just to name a few! Jazz albums are so exciting to me! So glad you're picking up some choice lps man. I wish we lived closer...I would set up a listening and chill lounge for us...and invite so many of the cats on here. Hope someone on here meets up with you in St. Louis...that would be the tits. Be well.☮
@DoctorDeadwax Yeah I went to Vintage Vinyl in St Louis.....did pretty well! I had them ship the records to me as I wanted them to be in one piece when they get taken off the plane! :)
@DoctorDeadwax I know right! I think people think if it wasn't more of the high brow hard bop jazz, it's not "fancy"......CTI put out some amazing stuff! That Jeremy Steig album is amazing! Thanks for watching!
i just realized how young jimi hendrix was when he left! you found some great albums, david. listening to that music in the background reminds me of dinnertime when i was a kid.
Awesome finds again! Not sure what Herbie Manns thing was with no shirt, same thing on his lp Push Push. Great lp, creepy cover. Love the Dolphy. Mingus, Dizzy, Rivers & Hendrix --You did very well.
@bigstar1000 Yeah I'm really excited about this recent stuff. I'm listening to that Jeremy Steig album right now for like the 6th or 7th time since I bought it. The Herbie Mann is really great too. That Eric Dolphy is good but can't really speak to it too much yet as I've just listened to size one so far and it's a double LP. As always thanks so much for turning me on to some of this great music and for watching!
I own no Jimi on vinyl, the stores in my area would sell that copy for 10 bucks even with all the ring wear. Needless to say, still waiting for a copy to show up one of these days either at a better deal or better shape.
@onebigholiday42 Yeah Electric Ladyland is a brilliant record. I just couldn't turn down an older copy for cheap! Thanks very much for commenting and watching!
I love Cannonball no matter what. I've never heard Cannon sound bad, I'm sure he does somewhere, but I've never heard it. Hubert Laws is wonderful. The only thing that I really dislike about Herbie Mann is his album covers - they were awful. He loved to show off his fur sweater for some reason. I have this Paul Horn record where he tried to play to killer whales. Far out! Art Blakey is so good it is just stupid - all the records you are showing are terrific. I dig Dizzy's dirty drawers.
@TheZeekgeek1 Cannonball was the original "Overweight Lover". Yeah Herbie needs to put it away. Blakey is fantastic, check out the book Hard Bop Academy sometime if you get the chance. WERD!

I read the same thing about Eric Dolphy- he was a real innovator. Hubert Laws- nice! I picked up a couple of his records- excellent stuff

@MrFartboy79 Have you seen the insane amount of reed instruments Eric Dolphy could play, along with the flute? It's just insane!

J.Steig, Mingus, Cannonball..awesome shit man! Herbie Mann on Embryo...cool. Eric Dolphy is the man. Would love to hear those Berlin gigs.
