Check out Steve Rothery and Diz Minnitt in The GranMarstonberries - one off gig at a festival - Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb is the best song they do. Brilliant
The kid at the end of the song that Fish picks up in the audience looks like the kid on the cover of Misplaced Childhood. Was he a plant by the band or a real audience member?
@gacci777 My guess is that it was planned. He must have known what was about to happen, if it had been spontaneous, I think there would have been some uneasiness on the part of the kids near the front... but watch around 8:11 one kid grabs his own hair, as Fish is releasing the boy. "Hey Fish, over here, grab ME!"
wtf was Fish doing in the end with that guy from the audience? Anyway, I was going to try to defend this song as not being the notorious Supper's Ready rip off, but it really is. It's still a masterpiece though.
@ANOMTOfficial and @mathmss The Finale is not plagiarism, more a tribute I think. Supper's Ready "Apocalypse in 9/8" is a different rhythm... 9/8 lol... I learned the bass part of Grendel first, and when I tried to play Supper's Ready it was obvious.. @@ # @ # @@@ # (2 beats, crash, 1 beat, crash, 3 beats, crash, repeat...)
@aliendogbrain Or... thumb thumb pop thumb pop thumb thumb thumb pop thumb thumb pop thumb pop thumb thumb thumb pop (repeat) For the freaks like me who don't read music. But I love both songs.
Loved Marillion as a teenager and a young squaddy out in Berlin, Hogamany 2010 and listening to my music hero's long live the 'Fish' Brilliant music am having a great evening watching these guys on you tube..
Thank you for sharing and Happy New Year to you all.
For me, Marillion was the band that continued the legacy of the Gabriel's Genesis over the 80's but i understand why they cut out Grendel from the set list, that last part "ruined" the song in terms of always been remembered as the "Supper's Ready plagiarism song" and it's a shame because it's a great tune.
Do fans STILL shout "Grendel" during Marillion and Fish concerts? It disappeared from the setlist 26 years ago, and they won't ever play it again! Shame, though: it's a good song.
Not that there's anything wrong with Fish, BUT to all you who say he is Marillion. How Much music, not lyrics, did he write. Answer none!!! He's just a glorified poet and without the other four guys he wouldn't even be that. It takes more than one person to make a band you know. And at least Steve Hogarth can write and read and play music!
@Nathanjrix1 - I think when people say Fish IS Marillion, they mean that with the voice, passion, charisma, drama, character, madness and originality that Fish brought to the band, no other person could quite match him. And thats a damn rare thing that few frontmen offer. If he really didnt write anything, then it makes him no less of an enigma because the lyrics/music that he did or didnt write, he brings to life in a way (nothing against Marillion II) Hogarth never has and never will.
@Nathanjrix1 music wasnt and isnt what Fish is about. He is a lyricist who can bring his words to life in a song. Without him the other 4 guys are nothing. They only brought music to the party. Fish brought the party to them and gave the music they were so capable of writing(a fact I dont dispute) meaning. They were a group who complimented each other. I dont say that "He is Marillion" but without him Marillion are far less of a band than they are with him.

without a doubt probably the best song ever written, it just so happens that it was done by one of my favorite bands The original band made a hug error lettin this fish "get away"
There is truth in almost every post, but you must know that supper´s is a metaphore in time and grendel is about an ancient Norwich poem, really different in context, that Fish is a Gabriel´s fan, absolutelly, who wouldn´t, so forget if there´s similarity or not, and as some of you wrote, Yes AND Genesis AND Floyd AND Crimson AND Camel AND Marillion, just live and enjoy these masterpieces they left us, and those who don´t agree, then go and listen POPULAR MUSIC there´s place for you all.
One other thing i wanna say please people dont insult this song.Yes there is simularity in one part of genesis song like 1 min but the song contains great art of music in each second of it.I`m reading stupid comments and that realy hurts for a song like this.REMEMBER MARILLION WITH FISH LAST JUST 6-7 YEARS AND LOOK ALL THAT PEOPLE AT LORELEY.imagine if they last longer!!!!!!!!
saying marillion is a copy of genesis is a very limited opinion. i agree that this particular track is heavily influenced by genesis' supper's ready. fish is also wearing a mask like peter gabriel did. but marillion made great original music albums too. so they are up there in the league with genesis and pink floyd for me.
Many people saying marillion are copy of genesis. That`s not true.I love both bands. But u tell me one genesis song that contains solo guitar like marillion have.Suppers ready is just a simular song with no guitar solo. Many songs of sympho or crout rock are simular.Than if u say this is genesis copy than all new progressive rock bands are copys of pink floyd, eloy ,van der graf generator atc. And i was surprised with your note that u said u are guitar player and u dont like this solos
People who say Marillion are a copy of Genesis clearly don't understand progressive rock. They associate Genesis with that kind of music and assume they were the first. I love almost all prog rock (while early Pink Floyd is rather weird). Marillion was one of those bands formed to show off their talents and bring in other influences, such as classical music (hence this sort of piece). People influenced by the same things may arrive at the same end.
@aliencheesemaker There's a fine line between being influenced by an artist and merely ripping them off, however. And in this song, Marillion is CLEARLY copying the Apocalypse section of Supper's Ready starting at 3:43. I don't know how anyone who's heard both pieces could think differently.
Sure the early prog bands had their influences, but they added something original as well. Marillion fails to do that here.
Yes it`s true about that part starting 3:43 fro second part it`s exactly same like Supper`s ready just the problem is that this part is worst in this song and that part of genesis song is best part in that song.Since u start reminding us about how great genesis are im asking u where are genesis today.U and all others talking about simularity cause nothing left of them:(.J loved them a lot to but that`s it, they are finished and marillion are not.
human20 can u tell me wtf are u talking about man.U know this is their greatest song. How can u tell it is not very professional,i can`t believe what u saying. This is one of the greatest progressive rock songs ever maybe the best one.And that u play guitar maybe u playing good TAKE THAT if u saying this is not professional.U realy pissed me off and i don`t know how`s taht this is your favorite band and u don`t like grendel.
marillion is my favourite band , and i am a guitarist too... it seems to me thta the guitar solos here are not very..good..and not very proffesiional...i guess its the early days ,..:)
Yes, we knew the supper's ready rip off in 1982/3, however it is still 17:40 (ish) of fantastic rock from an era of Wham and culture club. A wonderful trip down memory lane.
You think you're witty or cool with your stubborn quotations of Genesis ?
If you hate Marillion, why don't you just stay away from their channels ?
Believe me, everyone has lots of bands one doesn't like - but why to go to the videos of these bands and tell the watchers/listeners there, that they all are idiots - if not for provocation ?
What problem do you have, my dear ?
Btw I have all Genesis of the Gabriel era - but none the less I like Marillion ...
Pal, youare right...of course i prefer Genesis, and your coment is right....I will be honest with you, it`s not my intention "ofender" (sorry, im am from south america, i speak spanish) (to offend) to anybody....It`s just i love to cause controversia, and make a discussion about th thing that we really love behind it all: the music. Any way your coment is very gentle to me! saludos.
Yeah, I don't see a lot of similarities to Supper's Ready either. This feels more like a complete piece, with it's own story to tell. The parts of SR seem more separate and distinct.
Coming closer with our eyes, a distance falls around our bodies. Out in the garden, the moon seems very bright, Six saintly shrouded men move across the lawn slowly. The seventh walks in front with a cross held high in hand. ...And it's hey babe your supper's waiting for you. Hey my baby, don't you know our love is true.
Clearly fish and marillion were influenced by genesis this is made apparent (around the time fish puts the mask on)
by the rhythmic 123-12-1 beat in suppers ready which is kinda mimicked in Grendel but i love both fish/marillion have their own voice and story to tell.
I've seen other makes references to "Genesis' Supper's Ready" as if they automatically deserve overlord status.
I just listened to that again, and it really is quite monotone and not with nearly as much variation and emotional intensity, depth, power, and impression as Grendel.
I prefer the perverted wailing of Fripp (often passionate because of, not in spite of, its technicality), and the twisted beauty of Hackett's melodies (at least in his prime i.e. Genesis era).
Rothers is quite good, but still heavily indebted to his predecessors. It's unfortunate that he occasionally dipped into generic 80's metal stuff, but mercifully not that often. I agree that the solo on this track is pure gold.
Lol can't people just enjoy music without worrying about novelty and shit? If YOU only like totally new and original music, all the more power to you. Don't try to force that on others.
gideonguin u pathetic person how can u say all that. u have no idea what music is.go and listen coldplay u focking moron.this masterpiece u saying dont worth.get lost u and you`re supper`s ready.u think we don`t listen music and ul`l teach us now.Pissed me of realy bad

Derivative, pretentious shite. Only in such an impoverished society could anyone call redundant tosh like this "a masterpiece". And yes, the ending is a pure rip of the 9/8 section in Supper's Ready. At least Genesis tried to do something new, this is just poor man's prog. Thank god Fish left; at least then did they make the odd decent record.
Using pseudo-scientific vocabulary may imply experience, but sorry, no cigar. Grendel might not be Marillion's masterpiece, but it isn't half as boring as their actual stuff.
I have listened to 'Supper's Ready' a lot and I have listened to 'Grendel' just 4 times since early this morning! Ok you're right the last piece sounds just like 'Appocalypse in 9/8', but is it a bad song because Genesis used 9/8 earlier? NO, it is at least as good as 'Supper's Ready' but different.
robbiez1000, it was London Hammersmith Odeon. This was the 18th of April, 1983 because you can see Mick Pointer there and this was his last performance. It was a totally unplanned third encore, and as a side note, "The Web" which was played there has never ever been played live since that day. It was an amazing concert and one I'll never forget, yeah, im showing my age ;)

So you say you believe in all of mother nature's laws?
You lust for gold with your sharpened knives.
Oh when your hordes are gathered, and your enemies left to rrrrot,
You pray with your blood-stained hands at the feet of your pagan GODS!
Then you try to place the Killer's Blade in MY HAND!
You call for justice, distort the truth!
Well I've had enough of all your pretty pretty speeches.
Recieve your punishment, expose your throats to my righteous claws...
(then we stop, it's just a song)

You should have known better after all this time,
You're gonna pay in blood for all your vicious slander,
With your ugly pale skins and your putrid blue eyes.
Why should I feel pity, when you kill your own and have no shame?
God's on MY side, sure as hell I'm gonna take no blame!

It's becoming boring ! Every time I look up the comments - there always is this silly "original/copy"-discussion raging on.
Tjoppy, Dimovski and Alien explained it perfectly. Why the hell can't we love Marillion AND Genesis AND PinkFloyd ??
Apparently this question must be cleared anew every month 'til eternity ...
maguskh 2 years ago 3
saying marillion is a copy of genesis is a very limited opinion. i agree that this particular track is heavily influenced by genesis' supper's ready. fish is also wearing a mask like peter gabriel did. but marillion made great original music albums too. so they are up there in the league with genesis and pink floyd for me.
Tjoppy 2 years ago 2
o and Saga is great too
Tjoppy 2 years ago
I can see there that the band was very inspired by Genesis, though I must say that they make very good prog music as Genesis did!
frankymass 2 years ago 2
its a genesis copy !!!! especially the middle part , not an original marillion , original marillion for me was fugazi album
human20freedom 2 years ago
Many people saying marillion are copy of genesis. That`s not true.I love both bands. But u tell me one genesis song that contains solo guitar like marillion have.Suppers ready is just a simular song with no guitar solo. Many songs of sympho or crout rock are simular.Than if u say this is genesis copy than all new progressive rock bands are copys of pink floyd, eloy ,van der graf generator atc. And i was surprised with your note that u said u are guitar player and u dont like this solos
dimovski11 2 years ago 2
People who say Marillion are a copy of Genesis clearly don't understand progressive rock. They associate Genesis with that kind of music and assume they were the first. I love almost all prog rock (while early Pink Floyd is rather weird). Marillion was one of those bands formed to show off their talents and bring in other influences, such as classical music (hence this sort of piece). People influenced by the same things may arrive at the same end.
So that's an explanation, dummy.
aliencheesemaker 2 years ago 2
@aliencheesemaker There's a fine line between being influenced by an artist and merely ripping them off, however. And in this song, Marillion is CLEARLY copying the Apocalypse section of Supper's Ready starting at 3:43. I don't know how anyone who's heard both pieces could think differently.
Sure the early prog bands had their influences, but they added something original as well. Marillion fails to do that here.
jhillst 2 years ago
Yes it`s true about that part starting 3:43 fro second part it`s exactly same like Supper`s ready just the problem is that this part is worst in this song and that part of genesis song is best part in that song.Since u start reminding us about how great genesis are im asking u where are genesis today.U and all others talking about simularity cause nothing left of them:(.J loved them a lot to but that`s it, they are finished and marillion are not.

Yes, we knew the supper's ready rip off in 1982/3, however it is still 17:40 (ish) of fantastic rock from an era of Wham and culture club. A wonderful trip down memory lane.
megapawnstar 2 years ago
At 3:45 wow that is the SAME time signature/rythm of Supper's Ready: Apocolypse in 9/8 this should be Grendel in 9/8 lol

Btw I have all Genesis of the Gabriel era - but none the less I like Marillion ...
maguskh 2 years ago
Pal, youare right...of course i prefer Genesis, and your coment is right....I will be honest with you, it`s not my intention "ofender" (sorry, im am from south america, i speak spanish) (to offend) to anybody....It`s just i love to cause controversia, and make a discussion about th thing that we really love behind it all: the music. Any way your coment is very gentle to me! saludos.

Love Genesis as well. Seems that South America has great taste in music! ;-) Then of course, lots of good music has come out of South America!

Yeah, I don't see a lot of similarities to Supper's Ready either. This feels more like a complete piece, with it's own story to tell. The parts of SR seem more separate and distinct.
MatthewEK 2 years ago 5
This doesn't sound anything like suppers ready to me, sounds more like what iron maiden might have sounded like if they played prog instead.

Ya top five best songs ever
5. Grendel
4. 2112
3. Dogs
2. Suppers Ready
1. Echoes!!

I've seen other makes references to "Genesis' Supper's Ready" as if they automatically deserve overlord status.
I just listened to that again, and it really is quite monotone and not with nearly as much variation and emotional intensity, depth, power, and impression as Grendel.

That might be due to the limitations of recording technology in the early 70's.....just a thought

Whats all this shit about comparing Marillion and Genesis songs?
Both great bands and both make great music!
I love them both and am now listening to bands like Porcupine tree.
Guess i will get thumbs down for that coz they are not Marillion or Genesis.
Grow up you lot. They all have a place in music!

the best guitarist in the world for expression! Has any other guitarist been as consistent in passionate guitar lines?
dalgia 2 years ago 2
Too true!
Alot of people (NOT me) Say that David Gilmour is more expressive, but seriously, with Gilmour you get 2 great solos per album.
With Rothers, you get a F***ING Amazing guitar solo on most tracks on the album, and a brilliant guitar melody which he nearly always rights.
In short, I agree with you 100%!
progkidjoel 2 years ago 2
I prefer the perverted wailing of Fripp (often passionate because of, not in spite of, its technicality), and the twisted beauty of Hackett's melodies (at least in his prime i.e. Genesis era).
Rothers is quite good, but still heavily indebted to his predecessors. It's unfortunate that he occasionally dipped into generic 80's metal stuff, but mercifully not that often. I agree that the solo on this track is pure gold.

Derivative, pretentious shite. Only in such an impoverished society could anyone call redundant tosh like this "a masterpiece". And yes, the ending is a pure rip of the 9/8 section in Supper's Ready. At least Genesis tried to do something new, this is just poor man's prog. Thank god Fish left; at least then did they make the odd decent record.
gideonquinn 2 years ago
