  • good. i an twgirl taiwan . you tube twgirl1

  • Video is out of sync; sound is ahead of picture.

Nevertheless, it's nice to watch the performance.

  • In tradition, especially in Europe, clapping uniformly is the highest form of

    praise.

  • did he miss the last note or somethin at 9:33? why isn;t there any sound ?

  • @AlexanderWung

the sound is lagging....... notice before the last note his hands are playing different notes than what you hear.....it just doesnt line up quite right

  • bellissima interpretazione wow !!

  • In my opinion B.Michelangeli left us the best, incredible performances, about this repertory.

  • I recorded Radu Lupu sound last may at a concert and was forced by Lupu Management to take it off, he played Book 1 & 2 from the Debussy Preludes, very subtle....

Is there any coverage of mr. Lupu or is it all eradicated? ;-(

The first part is on my Vimeo now ;-)

  • wow, somehow the video is so off-sync that by 9:00 the notes he's playing are showed in the video like, 2 seconds later. LoL

  • Funny japanese people clapping uniformly. :)

  • I would suggest if someone has cold or flu staying home is the best choice. Why share germs AND noise? There's no possiblity of making a racket leaving if you never go in the first place.

  • Why don't people who cough at concerts bother to even attempt to cover their mouths? It's so rude.

  • Cough is often compulsive when you have a cold or the flu. Most of them cannot help themselves, and leaving also involves making a racket, so... Once I had an allergy attack and had to run out of a concert almost coughing to death.

  • @dannym454a I am annoyed by coughing only after people remind me of it. it somehow escapes my ears. maybe I am a terrible listener

  • @dannym454a Because its Japan....

  • 2:21 which note is that?? is that the deepest note on the piano???

  • It's a C1.

  • is that the deepest?or the second deepest?

  • A0 is the deepest. C1 is three notes above that.

  • Its the deepest C, but not the deepest in piano =)

  • thankyoo! i already have the reply =) (sry my bad eng=(

  • merci Judicaël ;)

    un guitariste

  • cristalinamente irretocavel .

  • You are the mistake

    lokopiano

  • i love this performance!~ the only thing that i would say is a little slower, but that is just my preference. and also because he slipped some notes on those octaves but just what i think.

  • yes, i totally agree about too fast! my preference too, for this piece...

  • the 2.nd perlude was really hard

  • Adorable sound, Debussy is really the opposite of his ennemy Wagner.

I think he created a really modern sound, a new way of musical expression, so dreamy and melancholic.

  • everyone has the capacity, but not necessarily the talent...of course passion and dedication usually beat out talent for the masses...but only the true musician can understand the intangible...and on some level the layman gets it as well...after all what separates greatness from mediocrity? or maybe I am just full of it....

  • I think there is a huge amount that separates talent from mediocrity including; rebellion, brains, direction, independence, perseverance, meaning, understanding, tolerance, humanity...

Mediocrity symbolises the art of defeat.

  • this was my point , but I believe that talent is an inexplicable thing....it is not learned or based on and human characteristic....it simply is or is not...but as I said before, this is not a thing that can be expressed by words.....you know it when it happens.....that is my opinion and nothing more

  • To (0630812) Tallent is what differs people who cannot master any piece completely from those who crossed the line of hinderance and are no longer blinded by the "mist"... Unfortunately not everyone has tallent to be a pianist or musician.

  • For Some reason, When POllini is donw with a song, or playing, his face looks very pained, all the time. I don't know, can you guys see it?

  • His old... and probably his back must hurt...thats why the pain on the face :-D

  • yea i thought the same thing, i think its more of an impacted look, like he has just experienced something very profound

  • It's wonderful how the harmonics of the low notes ring out to add to the chords early on, and above the low tremolo and trill at the end, of the Cathedral. Pollini seems to take great joy in this music. The abandon of the West Wind is spectacular. Tremendous flexibility in the right arm to get those scintillating triple octaves. Bravo.

  • I played this piece - La Cathedrale engloutie - at my student's concert on December. I love it

  • It would be great to have your comments on my own performance, if you have a chance

  • bad sync

  • wish I had the talent to play like this...

  • --You don't need "talent" to play like this, you need practice.--

Sure, no talent, just practice. And a diet rich in fibers.

  • indeed. xD

  • pfff... sorry, i dont usually reply ignorant comments as yours... but, ah... nevermind.

  • Well, the thing is that I don't believe in Talent. WHat is talent for you?

  • sorry my friend. This is a very difficult question to answer in just a few pages... im not saying even some words... but, nevermind. How could i argue with someone that do not believe in talent? it is somehow, understandable... you´re only 19 yet... just a kid. You´ll see someday!

Good luck my friend... keep studying, for that is "all" you need, as you say.

  • Of course you need talent. You need talent to be able to practice it.

  • or rather hard work... good mind... yeah...

  • The second prelude is in sync though.....incredible!

  • I love Paul Jaccobs as well.

A name that seems to be forgotten..unfortunately.

I think his recording of the Etudes is still my favorite.

This is beautiful, atmospheric playing...too bad the video is out of sync w/ the music.

I've seen him in concert, never that close, so this is very cool.

  • I had a recording of Jacobs playing Le Plus Que Lent that was incredible. His version for a while was my favorite Debussy performance other than Richter.

Phillipe Entremeont also plays brilliant Debussy.

  • paul jacobs is gooood

  • This is "La Cathédrale engloutie" -- the drunken cathedral...a lot of dissonant tones, but beautifully sounding...

  • Uh, it's 'sunken.' Otherwise, the cathedral might be a lot less artfully dissonant, majesty beneath the waves. 2:24 is absolutely riveting, obviously don't skip there though.

  • "sunken cathedral"

  • XD it's not Mozart but debussy, the music has evolved during 150 years don't forget that :)

  • this really did make me laugh, they kept clapping until he came back :P. I enjoyed these pieces alot

    Already my favourite

  • Pollini is ultimate perfection.

  • This version is solid, and of course live, but I think the version by Paul Jacobs is still superior to anything else I've ever heard. This includes Zimerman, Ohlsson, and Michelangeli, the other performers I rate highly for this piece.

  • Hello...I love Pollini's playing..and am wondering if you can send me this film..I am now learning the second piece in it.. thank you very much!:)

  • Great performance of one of the greatest pianists nowdays.

  • what do they mean by encores?

  • encores are extra pieces played by the pianist after his official program is over. Encore is French meaning something like 'addition' or 'more'

  • Literally, encore means "again" in French. Not that you were very off...I just had to say it.

  • Romantic??? What are you talking about??? Debussy is not Chopin!!! And this is the best inerpretation i've ever heard!!!

  • i agree with daeviydt his recording of the etudes is frickin awesome

  • nothing to say...pollini is the best pianist of ever...don't hear who says that it has not a great sound or interpretation...shut up them!

  • The video is all out of sync for me..

  • Dang. A little dissapointing from one of my top 5 favourite pianists. His style should really stay in the romantics, no offence to himself. He sort of 'rushes' Debussy, and has only a little taste of my favourite prelude (Sunken Cathedral; 1st One). Still, I would still reccomend him to stick with Chopin, Shumann, etc.

  • i really dont understand his way of playing.

to make a comparison with the same piece played by michelangeli would be simply not benevolent.

  • I'm wondering when are we going to stop comparing performers.. -indeed, there are some pieces who have a specific tempo, but you could change it if you can give a musical justification, as you can chance accents, phrases and other ideas, defending them with an objective justification..

  • this is a live performance, the sound isn't as up-close up-front and personal as it could be -- michelangeli is a god to me, richter is a god to me, but Pollini is a god to me also. This isn't a disc. This is a concert. It's beautiful, it's terrific, it's fine... His Debussy on disc is PHENOMENAL.

  • agreed.

  • I agree with you, suphysis.Pollini is a great master of every time piano.

  • All of you above are full of crap. He plays more with his left foot than all of you toghether. Great performances!

  • My left foot is pretty gifted, but... Pollini is beyond reproach!!!

  • the second prelude was too fast.. doesnt even sound like wind blowing anymore haha..

  • Disappointing....

  • actually Im not usually a fan of his but I think he suits this music .But yes so do Michelangeli and Richter.Encores are supposed to be faster.lol

  • Actually the first prelude (la cathedrale) is played too fast and I've heard more effective performances by Richter, Michelangeli, Barenboim. Still, a pianist cannot be evaluated by his encores.

  • Compared to Richter, disappointing. Superficial. Tempos not correct.

  • yeah,.. Debussy was all about "tempos" and "order"..

  • Superficial??????????????

  • Superficial?
