the reason pigs and wolves fall through is because when they jump on water thant thin they fall throyght where as chickens 'fly' and do not push themselves through the water layer :D

Well, for spiders (I found it most efficient) Is dig back a 3x3 area(Like Normal), then place 1 lava bucket on one of the sides, Then place another in the middle. Remove the one in the middle (So the flow is "Messed Up"), then place a bucket on the other side thus leaving and open space in the middle *****Dont forget the ladders on the edge to stop the lava flow. That way when the spiders crawl up the wall, the die and drop their items through that 1x1 are easier. At least it worked for me.

@756secret no, they have to be 4 wide and 5 high, but theres two ways to make them: 5 high and 4 wide, then ignite it with flint and steel, or take out the corners and then ignite it, it still works

if the Monster spawner is down the bottom, i reccomend shortening the mobavator, this will just increase the efficency. the ideal depth to be from the spawning pads, is around 26 blocks. this will mean, you arnt to far from the mobs for them to spawn, but your not invading the chunks down there..... you should use mcEdit to copy the spawning room, if you wanted to edit it. :)
