I fix latops, and Toshiba are the worst out there. I'd pick any brand over Toshiba, even those shitty generic brands like Advent. Every Toshiba laptop is slow, every Toshiba laptop overheats and blue screens/shuts down due to poor CPU or GPU cooling. This has been a problem since they began producing laptops. They pretty much sound like they're gonna catch fire just from the pressure of booting up Windows. I don't know how they've managed to get away with this so long, it's absolutely incredible

1. battery life is atrocious

2. when playing video/audio it freezes and buzzes from time to time.

other than that its ok.

don't get me wrong i'm still going to return it and get an asus laptop i'm a student and i need a reliable one

Toshibas are some of the cheapest, flimsiest, downright nastiest laptops you can buy. I could tell you all kinds of horror stories about them, as my parents bought a bunch of them for their business and I had one for awhile. They would overheat, randomly shut off, had horrible battery life, were always needing replacement parts, and were made of cheap coffee cup plastic and held together by masking tape inside in some cases, as I found when I took one apart.

Try windows 7 , then download the drivers from the Toshiba website... Everything should work besides the sound, do some more digging for the sound card from other laptop mfg's and you should be good. I'm on Windows 7 x64 and it's ok now. I will try Ubunu 10.04 next month and we'll see what up with that.

If you can, you can try Ubuntu 64 9.04 or the 32 bit edition , it works pretty well. Well the thumbscanner and modem don't work, but the sound works and the video is gread with the nvidia driver in Ubuntu, no thanks to Toshiba of course. I'm getting a HP next time.
