@ogaretho In her earliest appearances in the Fleischer Talkartoons (1930-31), Betty was a dog and had dog ears. By 1932 she had morphed into a human character and the dog ears had been transformed into earrings.
So now you know, kids: next time a gang of scary-looking people ask you to be a member of a sadistic society, say YES! Chances are it's a group of sexy women clones in disguise wanting to seduce you!
this is more on the bizarre side than on the surreal side. That of course is not a bad thing at all. This is one of the best Fleischer cartoons ever made.
@afg4life13, I have learned that the best way to expose these scumbags is to expose the banking system and the Federal Reserve. Please watch The Money Masters and tell others to watch it too.
Oh, yeah. I get it. ...and the candles on the hoophoopahachas' heads represent enlightenment (i.e. "illumination").
BTW, It's my understanding that Order of Skull & Bones borrowed the Skull & Crossbones and numeric symbology from the Thule Society (Secret Society which trained Adolf Hitler in the art of public speaking). The Thule Society borrowed their symbol from the Jolly Roger, which was in turn borrowed from the Templars.
@gunsandbullhorns, yes the Knights Templar. You got it. You should watch The Money Masters on youtube and next to it is a video called, "Evil International Bankers Rule the World with around 70,000 hits on it. The Illuminati controll the Federal Reserve and the entire global banking system ON PURPOSE in order to force humanity in world govt or their New World Order. Check out also The Creature From Jekyll Island and you'll really connect some dots there. Take care!
You should subscribe to misesmedia. It's the channel of the Ludwig von Mises Institute (Austrian Economics). Knowing who to blame is all fine and good, but it's essential to have a proper understanding of economics if we ever expect to beat them.
Now i get it... There was stiff competition between Fleischer and Disney and they always stole from each other... but Disney was a Freemason and Fleischer wasn't so that gave Disney some unfair advantages and connections and influence that Fleischer didn't have... and I think that's what the cartoon is all about and that's also why it's Mickey at the beginning who traps Bimbo.
@Supenmanu, these comments helped me connect more dots so to speak. The number 13 represents the Illuminati bloodlines, the bones and skelton represent, Skull and Bones secret society and the 33rd degree freemasons like Disney etc. This cartoon made me think of Bohemian Grove, The Bilderberg Group and I have learned that the best way to expose these criminals is to expose the Federal Reserve and the banking system. Please watch the Money Masters on youtube and then you'll understand.
This is funny becasue at the time MIcky MOuse was obviously the most popular and highest grossing, so in a way Micky Mouse was fucking over all other cartoons.
Plus, and somebody might be able to help me out here, the cartoon where there is guy and his stubborn mule trying to get across the United States to deliver a letter or package. All I can remember is an Indian that disappears with the words "The Vanishing American" on his back and the mule uttering the line: "three more box tops and you will be, Boss". Any help out there with that one?
I think you need to add "The Mad Doctor" to your list. It certainly ranks as one of the best ever to come out of Disney's, and was so good that Uncle Walt actually allowed it lapse into the public domain (he kept his grubby hands on the sappy stuff). If you haven't seen it, it can be found here on youtube.
This cartoon is mentioned in the commentary to the recent DVD release of the early Popeye film "Can you take it?". The comparison is very apt. This is much darker than the Popeye, although there is more direct violence in the latter. Great to be able to look this up so easily: thanks.
I think so. I guess Disney was subliminally eliminating the competition. Mickey was on a "I'm Steamboat Willie, Bitch" power trip then. Real Disney fans will get that joke.
Cartoonist put political statements in their work like writers. So it could also have been a metaphor. Like how easy it is to get people to follow pushy people blindly.
When Betty first appeared in this cartoon, she was intended to be a romantic interest for Bimbo, the Max Fleischer cartoon studio's dog character, (an attempt to create a Mickey Mouse equivalent).
My favorite cartoon of all-time! Notice the repeated "Skulls and Bones" motif, the exclusive Yale University secret society which had Prescott Bush 1917, George Herbert Walker Jr 1927, George Herbert Walker Bush 1948, George Herbert Walker III 1953, & George Walker Bush 1968 as members - also John Forbes Kerry 1966
yeah, i noticed that! makes you wonder what our grandparents, or even great grandparents were up to (or into!) great cartoon, and the first appearance of betty boop in a canine incarnation!
the fact that Mickey Mouse locks him in the sewer (and the club he's becoming a member of is all Betty Boops) can possibly be read as meta commentary. Was this the first cartoon of Bimbo? Was the initiation an enterence into the world of cartoons of which Mickey Mouse and Betty Boop were already part of? That would be quite interesting if so.
I do not know about micky, but Betty Boop is a spin off character from the Bimbo animations. This is obviously an early version of her as she has long, dog like ears. As she gained popularity her ears became shorter and more human like. Oh and bimbo became just a minor character in her cartoons (he never even appeared in the sunday comic strips).
My point is not that such a comparison can't productively be made, it's that Surrealism as an influence on the Fleischers' work has been too long over-stressed. Context is indeed important, but it's also possible that, when not missing the point, one can be missing something almost as crucial.
I disagree with Tom`s assertion that the comparison to european surrealism is fruitless. It is known that the surrealists held american popular entertainment in "high" regard. Especially Fleischer cartoons and Marx bros films. They`re also pretty close to Japanese animation from the same period. It`s not missing the point to put things in context.
Glad I found it, haven't seen this since I was a kid watching a Max Fleischer documentary with my dad.

It's too bad they don't make cartoons like this anymore.
It'd be nice if it was in Technicolor, but that's like saying that Geri's Game should've been in 3D.
