Wow he got old fast, but you figure when he had that hit song in the `70`s he was already 49. That`s so true though what he says about the Beatles. My Mum grew up around Liverpool, Manchester primarily, and she said her first thought when she saw the Beatles was that they were a joke, a comedy act, not a real band because everything about them was so over the top. And you know they said the same thing about the Ramones and even Elvis. There`s always a hint of humor underlying all great art.
I just finished his boook as well...and it's signed too. I was looking forward to hearing him speak at Chicago's Beatle convention a couple years back...and was sad to learn of his illness and eventual passing. It was such an interesting read...and he was not afraid to say what he really felt! RIP Normal!
I recall that there was a credit for trumpet playing for Hurricane Smith on the Teardrop Explodes 'kilmanjaro' I presume it's the same guy. Wiki and Times Obit doesn't mention it.
It is the same guy, Norman "Hurricane" Smith, who played trumpet on the Teardrop Explodes album. He also played trumpet (flugelhorn to be exact) on one of the cuts of his British album "Don't Let It Die." Aside from being the Beatles' longtime engineer, he also produced albums for Pink Floyd.
Thanks to Seth for interviewing Norman. I just wish people would spend more time dissecting his career as a recording artist because his self-named '72 album was one of the best pop albums I've ever heard in my life. I tried to get record companies to do a compilation of his work, to no success. Really wanted to interview him before he passed on, and now, it's too late. Some real melodic, sentimental gems on that LP and subsequent singles. Goodbye, Hurricane, and thanks for the music.
RIP Norman. You where a great unsung hero. George Martin and Geoff Emerick deserved all the good attention they ever got regarding the Beatles. But you where one of them too! You are maybe the single most influentual and most listened too sound engineer in recorded history. And you have just passed away. I'm so sad!
norman smith needs to write a book...geoff emerich did but jeff tokk over from norman from revolver on..but norman was the man from the beatles first day at abbey road emi studios thru to rubber soul...come on norman write a book...please and i loved "oh babe" too...
Norman did write a book.... it's yet to be publically published - it's called "John Lennon Called Me Normal". He promoted it at a Beatlefest in the US last year.
And I type this just minutes after hearing of Norman's passing. A sad night.
I have an autographed copy of his book and it is a treasured possession. I was a huge fan and was so sorry to hear of his passing. RIP Hurricane -- you are truly missed.
I loved his songs and his voice, I even strummed along to his songs, when I was a lovesick teenager!!! there will never be another.

I just heard about his passing, heartbreaking. They need to release his early 70s stuff on CD, that whole original LP was fantastic.

35 years ago he was saying what the world is talking about now..........
"What we see is what we choose
What we keep or what we lose
forever
The world is ours to tear apart
But what if it's too late to start
again?"
