This place reflect 4 tragic events of the Bohemian history, civil war of 1278-81, famine 1315, plague 1380, and Hussite wars 1420-1434. Some skulls have wounds from medieval weapons. The cemetery was considered a holy ground and for that reason people wanted to be buried there. When the burial plot was full, the bones were excavated and put into the chapel. Over centuries, thousands of people were buried there. The message was that live or dead, all Christians belong to the community of God.

Dear all, I am a manager of Information Center in Sedlec and with the full authority given to me by the owner of the Bone church I have to confirm, that the bones have nothing to do with muslims. The bones come from 3500 sqm large cemetery and they were exhumed before the abolition of the cemetery. There is enough independent scientific evidence about that. Only the fact non Christians could never be buried on Christian cemetery neither inside any church in those times gives enough support.

@lushhmushh Ever heard of plague? They had to do something with the remains. I like that instead of building yet another Holy Trinity Column they decided to do this and kill two birds like that. It's unique and original.

Also (yes there were books and chronicles) it's a great, terryfying(thus quite effective) document about how horrible times were there seven centuries ago.

But when you got a full gaveyard still in use, you gotta do something with the remains so there is place for new ones. These are not Muslim bones. There were no Muslims anywhere in Central Europe. When this church was build and people were buried around it, Ottoman empire even did not exist. The nearest Muslim country was in Spain, from which medieval Bohemia had not whatsoever any ties. Many of these bones have wounds from several battles that happened within the area of the monastery from 13th to 15th century.
