I agree with the Prof in every respect except that his comments can only really have meaning, more or less, to a Western audience. For those of us privileged enough, and by nothing more than a random accident of birth, to live in the West, being a free thinking atheist is a luxury. In many parts of the world, for many different reasons, being an atheist is not an option. However, Dawkins has a valid point which we should remind ourselves of as often as possible.
The irony in this is, Richard Dawkins is in fact just complementing what's being said in the bible. John 10:10" I have come that they may have life and have it to the full. " I'm not sure that this is the exact quote but it has been paraphrased anyway.
@DeusSoli92 You might be better off having read a dictionary, specifically the page containing the word irony. The bible also encourages slavery, including Paul in the new testament. It says the god who's never there and we have no reason to believe exist loves us and cares for us and yet, no sign of any of this. It says the earth is six thousand years old. Who gives a shit what it says is what I am getting at, it's an irrelevant collection of stories and lies.
"Dead-to-the-spirit deluded "God Delusion" author & blithering fool scientist goon Richard Dawkins another "leader" given to the profane masses is another useful idiot for Jesuit machinations"-C.O.
Jesuitical: pertaining to the Jesuits or their principals; designing; cunning; deceitful; prevaricating
The Jesuits completely altered the education system to suit their evolution agenda to discredit the Bible. They cant have a Satanic society of 'Do as Thou Wilt' if people still follow the Bible.
looks like a guy who is secretly upset, trying to convince himself... of course it does, RD. of course it does. that's why you're always arguing with people and trying to convince them you're right.
if I was truly an atheist I wouldn't care what others thought. I would be living my own life.
@wishingwellspring He's trying to do his part to help end religious superstition and promote rational thought. The intelligent among us get that, but you clearly do not.
You say you wouldn't care what others thought. That's a huge difference between you and us. We do care about others and their well-being. Throwing away a large portion of the one life that you actually do get to experience is just sad.
@ndrthrdr1 Saying "the intelligent among us get that, but you clearly do not" is a form of superstition because without any rationality, you're assuming that I lack intelligence and that you possess it. Therefore your initial statement about promoting rational thought is a little flawed, because the kind of thought Dawkins really promotes is illustrated through your second sentence. Caring about the well-being of others is different from caring about their largely harmless 'superstitions.'
And before you say: "Religion isn't harmless, it causes war and bigotry and etc" - that is not generally true. People cause war and bigotry and etc. Everything isn't to be blamed on religion. Doing so is an irrational tactic, comparable to the fear-mongering practiced by would-be tyrants in regards to other ideas like socialism.
@wishingwellspring I know what genocide is, I was making an analogy to show the errors in your logic. sigh...
Ok, gas chambers and racist ideologies don't kill people, people do, so according to your logic, there's nothing inherently wrong with gas chambers or racial superiority.
@ScottBrown666 There is an incorrect assumption you make when you formulate an analogy that draws a parallel between genocide and submission to God. It is: "the institution of religion teaches its followers to do bad things to society." This is only true for the irrational followers of religion. Islam teaches - love: don't hate. Be at peace. Follow and respect the originator of all life. He teaches you how to live under natural law. Research the institution, not the institutionalized few.
@wishingwellspring Islam also teaches you to stone adulteress women to death and all kinds of other horrible things that if you truly submit to can be no more palatable than genocide. But thanks for dodging my revised analogy.
The originator of all life? You're operating under the assumption that life in this universe vast beyond comprehension only arose once.
@ScottBrown666 You should investigate Islam more. In past Islamic societies, stoning almost never occurred. Neither did adultery. The threat was enough. These days, terrible people rape women and then stone them to death. That is far from Islam and completely despicable. And no, I'm not operating under that assumption. In the Qur'an it states multiple times that there have been past worlds before us and after us creation will be reborn.
@wishingwellspring I know. I never said Muslims couldn't be peaceful. I'm not gonna bother getting into this, I'll leave it to Steve Weinberg: "With or without it, you’d have good people doing good things and evil people doing bad things, but for good people to do bad things, it takes religion."
@wishingwellspring And.... uhhhh.... don't be so coy. Quran (5:33) - "The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement"
@ScottBrown666 Yeah, those who wage war... i.e., active military fighting against Islam. This doesn't even say 'against you' - it's specifically 'against Allah and His messenger'. I think your ideas about religion are based too deeply off other people's (such as Steve Weinberg's) quotes and ideas. You should really get into it, search for the truth irregardless of popular opinion, and formulate your own rational judgments. It also takes religion for selfish people to do good things sometimes.
@wishingwellspring I wasn't aware that atheism was a popular opinion. But i am aware that it's not, at least where I live. AMERICAAAAAAAAAAAA! Actually, Americans trust atheists less than any other group, including Muslims.
But yeah, most of the time when religious people do something good, it's for all the wrong reasons and probably ends up contributing more to evil in the ultimate scheme of causality. Christians love to help indigent, vulnerable people, with the goal of converting them.
@ScottBrown666 It all depends on what circles you surround yourself with. These days, within this younger generation, in the societies in the more developed and civilized parts of the world - atheism is pretty popular. It's like the cool newer kid on the block when it comes to life philosophies [religions].

@wishingwellspring People also cause genocide, are you going to tell me that genocide isn't necessarily a bad thing?

@ScottBrown666 Uh, no? How did you draw that logic from my reply? What I said was tantamount to saying 'guns don't kill people, people kill people'.

@wishingwellspring According to the same logic you could have said "Genocide doesn't kill people, people do."

@ScottBrown666 Genocide is the definition of killing a race. Don't be silly.
