Dang it, nobody knows anything in these comments. At first I saw one comment that I was going to reply to for being wrong (I watched the series in about a week and finished yesterday, so I know just about everything) but then I saw another, and another, etc, so I gave up.

@Android18uk U definitely should try it It's a really good anime with a sick story, lots of rational plot twists, and great character development. And no the show doesn't end with lelouch using geass on himself, thats more toward the beginning of the show, but the ending is one of the best anime endings if seen.

Just as when he used his geass... *SPOILER* on Charles by breaking something, throwing it up in the air, and then through one of the reflections that bounced between all the pieces he could see into Charles eyes. In Mao's example he could not see his eyes.

If someone was say, wearing normal transparent glasses, they could still be affected by the Geass. Therefore, when Lelouch looked at himself and used his Geass, it worked. It's also said by Lelouch that looking at someone else through a mirror and using the Geass will also work.

The only condition Lulu has is that he has to have eye-contact in order to cast his geass. Mao's glasses are the type where you can't see their eyes! yes, WE see them, but it's an anime, so it's like when we see lulu through his Zero costume. That's why the glasses keep lulu's geass away, and the glasses are on to lessen the severity of Mao's geass (much to no avail). The mirror lets him have eye-contact with himself. Ever made eye contact in a mirror? definitly possible XD

Mao has special glasses that stops Geass. He was using it because he couldn't control his own Geass.

For Geass to work, you just need to catch a person's eyes in anyway, as long as it's clear.

Well, lets say that geass was a light, if that light was going through glasses, it would get refracted and wouldn't exactly reach the eyes, as the glass in glasses are not straight, but slightly bent. However, with a mirror, the light just reflects right back in the exact same position.
