das hat beim besten willen fast gar nichts mit der kampftechnik der wikinger zu tun, diese haben es ihrer religion nach auf ein direktes kräftemessen angelegt, auf das stärkere gewinnt.

good way to finish off anyone who still fights after their army is routed. But the point of those big shields is for the shield wall. These moves would leave the wall open and the attacker's flanks vulnerable.
Nobody ever really simulates a true shield wall. It's probably not entertaining enough, it takes too long for one side to gain the advantage.
I been noticing that you do not defend much with the sword, is that because its a drill or you just focus on striking with a weapon? Great instruction otherwise!
Watched your number II video as well. I take it you're practicing huscarl fighting here, because of masks (I think I saw strikes being directed at the head)?

One lil thingy, many shields were attached to lower arm so that it couldn't spin. Also more power war delivered this way - I think more clever way than holding shield like sword.
the lack of spin only benefited peasants because they weren't highly trained. The shield's spin helps you absorb or deflect heavier blows with your arm possibly getting hurt. Also as you can see here a spinning shield can quickly block/blind an opponents attack or or defense.
The more skilled a fighter, the better a center held shield is. Yes you can carry a heavier shield when its strapped but that is only good if your in formation absolutley no advantage in loose figting.

Peasants? And what vikings were? Soldiers? No, they were peasants, barbarians.
And real soldiers like Legions or later in the middleage crusaders. Those were trained swordsman and they were using shields as I do.
Vikings were only promoted by legends, they weren't skilled nor powerful.
What's more after in the end of middleage leaders changed to two handed sword or longswords - every one of each could crush tiny wooden viking shield into small pieces.
Vikings were warriors not peasants. They had a warrior class and scandanavian peasants were better fighters than any other militia on the continent.
Hoplites used shields like you do, the trained legionary swordsman did not. I hope you realize that you lose over a foot in reach when you strap a shield and tactical flexibility.
Vikings defeated as wide a range of enemies as Rome did. They were the best inantry in the world at the time(warrior class). Just ask the Byzantine emperor.
@papaburger Eh... Just like any other people was at the time. Except for killing unarmed monks, which even the vikings didn't do, except for a few renegades found in any people anywhere. The vikings killed/wounded anyone in their way, be they armed or not. Those who didn't want to stand against the vikings most likely survived.
So, just like any other people, really. They just called their looting looting, instead of war and taxes.
@Halofreakanoid Which I stated earlier. "Vikings were warriors, peasants, nobles, merchants etc etc, whatever the other people have been." That does include settlers.
Same goes to samurais who are promoted to be best warriors ever. Oh, come on people. In the middle age they were running in wooden armor with bows and spears. Katana then were normal steel swords.
We know those great unbreakable katanas, but those been produced since 17th century when Europeans had guns giving no chance to samurais.
For me best warriors were those under leadership of Attila the Hun who conquered Rome.
Also Poland with their Husaria were the only one who conquered Moscow.
Outside of Greece, pretty much every shield was held in the fist without enarmes until about AD 1000. A lot of reproduction viking shields are made - incorrectly - with arm straps/enarmes, but there is no evidence that the originals were held held differently than shown in the film.

fucking pathetic. the best sword and shield technique for one on one combat is putting you sword on your shoulder and bashing your opponent with you shield then bring the sword down on them while there stunned.
WOT??????? and they r doin wot with there sheild at the time not blocking? not useing thier sword at all ? just lettin you hit them ?not a hope in hell that would work
Really great vids. But i think that this tecniques only work if you got a Branded Shield (I don´t now if that expresion is correct), i mean that kind of shield that you hold only with your fist, and not that one you hold with two leather stripes. Hope you understand me.
why is skeletor a viking now?

Nice vid, shows the techniques well, but I can't help but feel that they leave the aggressor open to a cut to the head.

you're a fucking idiot. Have you ever held a shield all-star. Attach a round shield to your arm and see how well you can block leg strikes.

I did ^^
By doing this I could carry heavier shields which means better protection agains arrows.

@MadiBebe infact is that the vikings were scandinavian peasents, the only diffrence from an grower peasent is that they went out to plunder or trade.

@DiabolusIgnis : Not all vikings were war-like. Many of them just came to settle in different regions, and live off the land of other countries.

@Vultar666 I totally agree, the samurai are very much overly glorified, especially fucking katanas.

Hi compupack, glad you appreciate our stuff.
The shield attack is from Talhoffers duelling shields section, the passing on of the defender's low cut is the result of experimentation.
