Yes I use sand its a variety, as for filtration I have filtration and a refugium. With the built in wet dry I its 3 compartments so I put chaeto and a heater in the first . Second is filter floss then live rock and the third is my ATO and return pump. I have two 39 watt T5s over the chaeto that run in the rear of the light.

Do you have live sand in with your live rock?
Did you turn their filtration system into a refugium?
