For people who don't know this application is called LightWave 3D this version is 9 and for those who asked if it's commercial or free it's not free like blender it's for 895$ for the latest version 10.1 this moment summer 2011
I should probably mention that IKboost is another good option for animating long necks and tails. Its not quite as precise as using goals, but animates much, much more quickly as the user only has to click and drag the tail into the positions that they want. I just wish IKboost's interface were a little less clumsy :(
@tndStudios I tried to get IK Booster to work correctly for months with no luck. Although it is easy to pose with, the type of animation curves it creates are basically useless. It's unfortunate because if it had worked correctly it could have solved most of my animation troubles.
i really like your tutorial, i wish i knew lightwave, im using blender and it doesnt come out as good as that..but i just got ZBRUSH and am trying to learn that..anyhow i was wondering if you could teach me how to set up the bone structures like you did...its confusing as hell and i hate having to read manuals cause they never show you all of what youre trying to get to..anyhow, hope you can help..thanks
I did that with version 9. All those tools have existed since version 8 or so, so you should be able to do similar things with previous versions of LW.
The bone pitch, I've seen something similar in an XSI tutorial, the guy did it for an eyelid that is opening and closing. The pitch allowed him to have the bones open the eyelids, but the eyelid would look more natural with the pitch giving the lower part of the lid a slower reaction. Wondered how something like that would be done in Lightwave, now I know :)

I am entirely self trained in 3D. I learned through books and video tutorials like these.

Very nice. I'm still somewhat new to rigging and every bit helps.
Have any plans to do any texturing videos?
-Cheers
