@bikebeerrun1960 Actually he didn't. Rod McKuen wrote English lyrics for Jacques Brel's original French version ("Le Moribond") in 1963...despite what Terry Jacks says!
@Polyhymnia61 Yes, McKuen made a deal with Brel to do the official English translation. However, Terry Jacks is correct in saying that he changed the lyric in some significant ways, making it more appealing to a teen audience. His version sold 12 million plus. It was a pretty obscure tune before that, so give Terry a little credit! Cheers
@charlyW34 Sales figures mean nothing to me, sorry. And Brel's original (and the Walker Brother's lovely English remake from the sixties) aren't considered "obscure" to audiences outside North America.
@Polyhymnia61 Hi, point taken. Since most of the music I have liked since the mid '70's never sold squat, I too rarely take sales figures into account. I only mentioned it in this case to illustrate the impact the Terry Jacks version had. Though you and I care not for sales figues, I'm certain both Brel and McKuen were happy with the impact those figures had on their bank accounts! Cheers
This is stupid, why is he beating that girl?

@cheriansrule Because she is trying to force him into marrying her so that she can divorce him and steal his boat.

Man, that Terry Jacks had A macabre streak in him. . . no wonder he later wrote stuff like "Seasons in the Sun".
