About a year ago I looked out and saw a hawk standing on top of my coop just like the hawk was doing on yours. I didnt have a shotgun but I grabbed my little .22 rifle and missed on the first shot (which surprisingly didnt scare it away) but hit it and killed it on the second shot. I dont know what kind of hawk it was or if it was legal or not but I would do it again anyday to protect my birds. Sorry for your loss.

We've had a hen taken by a hawk. The hawk ate only the meat off the neck and left the rest. I don't blame the hawk, chickens are delicious. As long as they don't kill my rooster Sasquatch, who's already escaped a fox.

You should covered up the whole chicken coop. No matter what is out there in the woods. Your living in a wild life habitat with other wild creatures.
You know if a dog cares for the sheep and goats. Dogs do care for chickens as well. Small or Big it doesn't matter. Make sure it's a puppy that stays with chickens and as it grows up it will chase any intruder hungry predators out there just to keep your live stock safe.

this sucks, happened to me yesterday to..my hen with her 12 chicks wanted to come outside to eat some grass and take a bath on the dirt...i went inside to change because i just came back from school so when i came back all my chickens and rooster were crying..when i got there the hawk was there i ran to it but it was too late sadly one chick died, one got stapped on the back and the another one got loose with injuries and is ok now and one is gone and cant find it...the hawk probably took it
Same thing happened to me ! I put chicken wire over the whole top. & filled in any holes anywhere.....You need to buy a nice long riffle .22 with a scope.

Not all hawks are considered Chicken hawks, and being you had to get on the computer to get to YouTube, you can also educate yourselves with the computer. this is the technology/information age. Please take advantage of it while you can. Some Birds of Prey are bird specific, some are rat/mouse and even insect specific. Peace

this sucks, happened to me yesterday to..my hen with her 12 chicks wanted to come outside to eat some grass and take a bath on the dirt...i went inside to change because i just came back from school so when i came back all my chickens and rooster were crying..when i got there the hawk was there i ran to it but it was too late sadly one chick died, one got stapped on the back and the another one got loose with injuries and is ok now and one is gone and cant find it...the hawk probably took it

haha damn so it just wasnt me i had a red tail hawk (((((HUGE))))) kill one of my chicks and he stood on my chicken coop for a while so i and walked up to him with my 9mm KHAR and shot in the ground twice when i was standing rite next to him and he didnt even budge so the i through rocks at him and he flew in to a tree but he kept coming back so i had no choice but to shoot him!!!!!!
