  • My great grandpa crushed his ankle during rehearsal for this operation. He couldent go so his unit went and almost all of them were killed. It makes me think of all the kids I could actually know but I dont because their forefathers were killed in things like this...

  • OK - what do I need to say: My dad cycled up to Friesland to get food aged 9 with two small sisters in tow, his older brothers went into hiding to avoid working in Germany, my mum lost a brother to leukemia. Damn to all strategists. Let's just all agree this is wonderful film music. It won't ever do any of the soldiers who fought at Arnhem any justice. But I salute them all.

  • No one will understand what it was like at Arnham unless you where there. Operation Market Garden was a disater yes. Mostly becaue of bad planing.

    To do something knowing there is more than a good chance you won't becoming back and do it anyway that to me is true courage and bravery.

  • My grandad was wounded just outside nijmegen trying to reach the brave boys in the parachute regiment after fighting his way ashore in the first wave on gold beach with 1st battalion the hampshire regiment. He was 19. He inspired me to the point where I'm joining the army, I never had the chance to tell him properly and he died earlier this year, he was an incredible man who touched the hearts of everyone who knew him. RIP ernie boy, I love you and miss you more than words can say.

  • As an American i clearly recognize the Brits contributions to the war, their efforts at Arnhem moved me, and at the end of the movie with the retreat and singing "Abide with me" well i almost cried.

  • As much as I love war movies involving the Americans, I always think it's interesting to see movies from other people's points of view, like the British, the French, or even the Germans. That's what makes movies great, being able to watch them from anyone's point of view.

  • @Anders2185 I don't mind dramatizing the truth a bit, but these days, war movies are about special effects, not the soldiers, the hardships they went through, the mental strain, the comradery; now it's all about explosions.

  • There are maybe 5 "war movie " themes that stand out as the all time best this is one of them. The others are (in no order) Patton, Bridge Over The River Kwai, The Longest Day and the Great Escape. Each has a terrific sound track to go along with them as well. Thanks for posting this. Bye the way all the books were better than the movies.

  • @jorcastify That's an idea, but the area around the northern end of the Nijmegan bridge was swamped in SS troops to, finding a safe drop zone close to the Nijmegan bridge at short notice would be tough, plus the only other Airborne troops we had were the British 6th Airborne and they had only just returned to England in early Sept from the front.

  • @jorcastify Many Germans considered it their greatest defeat. beating the british at Arnhem meant it was Russia and not the Western Allies that got to Berlin first. If Operation Market Garden ahd beena success it would of changed the cold war entirely.

  • This music captures the entire event well. It starts with so much jubilation, so much enthusiasm for the coming job...an enthusiasm that the British 1st Airborne Division never gave up at Arnehm. If you haven't read the book yet, I strongly recommend that you do. The actions of the Red Devils at Arnehm go beyond words; there's simply no way to describe their fighting spirit and tenacity.

  • @penroff4 The division was still destroyed by two very understrengh SS panzer divs made up of ethnic Germans, the two Panzer divs were so depleted by the Normandy fighting, I think the British even outnumbered them, But its probably pretty hard to stop a Panther with a Piat. The British and Americans had all the resources on their side, notice how the English very seldom beat the Germans on the ground unless they had overwhelming force, Germany was way way spent by this time in the War!!!

  • @b52gf16c You're correct, the Brt 1st Airborne did outnumber the II Pz Corp; but the Germans had the support of the 1st Para Army as well as the German 15th Army. Although these units were heavily depleted from the battles in France, they were still far from "way spent". The Red Devils were supposed to hold Arnhem Bridge for 4 days; they held it for w/o proper anti tank weapons for 4 days with only 700 of the 10,000 strong division. The division would go on to hold Arnhem for another 5 days.

I think the Germans would have stomped your whole Army (like a narc at a biker rally) with just one of their top Groups , but to be fair to you English you had military evacuations perfected to an exact science by that time (so maybe your losses would have not been that bad)

    The English clearly didn't win the war, but they held on when it was tough, when it was easy to give up. They fought valiantly, determined to do their duty. But you have such a hard on for Germany you seem to either ignore or approve of who they fought for. Read your history, they didn't fight for Germany, they fought for the National socialist party.   • @jpank11 Lets be honest the British 8th army ( a very lavishly equipped Army) had a hard enough time against two very small, ill supplied German formations in the African theater. The litany of English disasters aganist a prime Germany early in the war is a lot of information to digest- Norway, France, Greece, Crete ect ect. You people had a good Airforce, but in a fair fight you cant match the Germans on the ground and you know it and to be fair nor could the Americans either!!!

Bittrich, the II Pz Corp's leader, said himself Brit 1st: "In all my years as a soldier, I have never seen men fight so hard." If you compare Brits to the Germans, its true that one army beat the other. The Brits naval and air exploits more than made up for this. In fact, it would be the Brits system for close air support that laid the ground work for the modern systems of today.

Im sorry there may be exceptions to the general rule (like Arnhem) but on a whole I was not very impressed with British military prowess in both World Wars (regardless of the fact that they were on the winning side) The Western powers essentialy let the Germans and Russians bleed to death (no wonder the Soviets did not trust the West after the war) and came in at the end to defeat a very weakened Germany, bravo Allies!!!!

So while I see some merit in your summary of the forces involved in Europe, the focus of this video (and of my original comment) was not the entire British military c. 1944, but of the Red Devils.

I dont agree with Nazi Policys, but what the German army was able to accomplish (with a population base of 65 million and the Nations economy not even on a real war footing until the middle of 43 was very impressive) and I hold the same praise for the Israeli defense force(which has even less scant resources). Be honest The US/UK/USSR had the resource base and Germany didnt- its called attrition!!!!!

Yes Germany had some of the best generals & equipment. Yet the worse off allied soldiers came anyway. From the assault on Arnehm, to the close run defense of Russia in '41, they still fought as inferior as they were, a fact they were aware of. They weren't the best. They fought regardless.

  • @b52gf16c kinda hard to tell since no other country is giving the kind of proportional aid the israelis get but if we were facing a army of poorly trained peasant conscripts led by officers who were barely better and got the commission as a result of family connections and were equiped with weapons vastly inferior to what we had we would win.

  • @madmike19682003 The USA has the smallest foreign aid budget per capita of any Western country and that was the deal at Camp David to pay Egypt and Israel to stop fighting and keep the economically vital Suez canal open. The US has already faced poorly trained peasant conscripts Korea/Vietnam and that did not work out to good for us. The Arab armies are all large and trained and with copious amounts of equipment and foreign aid, are you just pulling asseritions from the air????

The Israelis fought the Syrians in Lebanon in the 80s (you do remember the 86-0 IAF victory over the Syrian AF at the time) plus the Israelis bombed Iraq in 81 and took out a nuclear reactor (weapons grade) lucky for Us

  • @b52gf16c i figured you were a pogue of some sort. the nva lost about 2.5 million according to the best estimates. granted that's men lost to disease as well as combat. about 2.7 million americans set foot in vietnam with a additional 600,000 serving at one time or another offshore on ships or bomber crews flying overhead. and the nva were way tougher than anything the israeli's ever saw.

The UK and France wore the Germans down in WW1 and Russians attritted the Germans enough in WW2 for us to get into the war. since then we have a draw, two losses and who knows what in Afghanistan, its a poor combat record vs the IDF'S.

Because if you have never been there you cant appreciate what the security situation is.You literally can not drive down the highway for ten minutes without seeing the Airforce scramble their jets to some perceived threat. IDF troops defend 1 small area against basically 1 enemy in the marines we literally had to be able to fight in any clime and place. i did mountain,desert,urban and jungle training. well you get the point. i never served with IDF troops but i did deal with arabs....not exactly the toughest foreign troops i saw.

  • @b52gf16c i went into the service before college as i didn't want to be a burden on my parents and because i thought it would be a adventure i also do think if you receive the benefits of living in this country you should have to do something for it. so maybe i was idealistic. i work for a commercial airline mostly for the adventure. hey i get bored easily.

Its a tiny nation surrounded by nothing but pain and threats and you have the audacity (considering the American combat record since 45) to suggest that they are only up against chopped liver.   • @b52gf16c i was raised in tennessee by 2 great parents with 9 other kids. many of us were adopted and came from all races. we were raised devout catholics so that explains the school. i went to college for a year than joined the marines because i think everyone has a duty to help defend this country especially if you came from a rich or middle class background. and i wanted the travel and adventure to be honest. so yeah i was a romantic idealist you could say. did 4 years got out and went back.

  • @madmike19682003 i think the wifi is acting up so i'm gonna have to go slow. got out of the service after serving with a very diverse group of people which was a shock for me having to deal with stupid as well as smart people. something going to school with the sons and daughters of scientists and engineers didn't prepare me for at all. i served with all kinds on ship and shore. went back to school and basically became a jack of all trades but master of none. i feel like i did it all.lol

  • @madmike19682003 You know the other thing about Entebbe in the IDFS favor, they did not have a trained terrorist unit at the time (like Delta Force) the men were picked from various brigades in a hurry, so their operation is even that much more impressive considering our complete disaster (with more resources no less) in Iran yrs later!!

  • My fathers regiment played a big par in this battle but hardly receive any acknowledgement for the part they played. They were the glider borne troops of the 2nd Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment.

  • Real Bridge at Arnhem was removed and rebuilt as a medium scale bridge. Because during the war the bridge took quite a beating and caught fire from the German ammo dump.

  • This is wonderful film music. It bears no relation to the suffering of each individual soldier. Bless each and every one of them, but no film or any film music will ever do any of them any justice. The composer here attempts to grasp what all of them wanted to achieve - defeat of evil, in glorious failure, and glory despite of defeat is achieved. I salute them all.

  • how can someone not like this the film is fairly accurate but the brits got massacared they fell into the bear pit and got torn to shreads it is a place i want to visit to pay respects to our brave dead.

  • @timothy19681 I've been to the areas that Operation Market Garden took place in (Grave, Eindhoven, Arnhem etc) its a great experience, plenty of museums to visit, but the most memorable part of my trip was speaking to a Dutch man in one of the cemeteries who was a boy living in Oosterbeek when the allies landed there, it was very interesting, I'll never forget that.

    I highly recommend going.

  • this was a fantastic movie and steve maqueen was supposed to be in it, but he had a huge ego and demanded that he was the main star. He was cut and james caan took the part he was to get. man, the nerve of some actors!!

  • One of my patients brothers was killed near Arnhem and is buried in the airbourne cemetry.She was only 4 at the time but still remembers him vividly.These men were dropped into a hornets nest by our illustrious leaders and it is to their credit that they fought heroically in the face of impossible odds.I have met two of the survivors and they both told me that the operation was doomed from the start due to a traitor within the dutch resistance.However they have nothing but praise for the Dutch.
