Hey everyone, don't forget to celebrate "This is what you get when you poke the bear, AT&T, day!" Show AT&T what we can do if we have an unlimited plan with AT&T. Our holiday is the last day of the billing cycle and shows AT&T what happens when unfair business practices are imposed. We are the 5%, er 95%! :)
Basically, Dial *3282# on your AT&T phone with the unlimited plan. Then, celebrate the day before your next billing cycle by streaming as much hi-def as possible. Let's up the quota!
AT&T's word & network can't be trusted. If you complain your "Unlimited" data contract is breached by throttling, they try to justify it by making up definitions. Webster's defines UNLIMITED as: lacking any controls, unrestricted -unlimited access-- Conversely, if you try to escape AT&T's clutches they cite their unalterable contract; with an early termination fee of hundreds of dollars. Warn others of AT&T's misconduct, report it to your Atty. General, the FCC & FTC; & start lawsuits.

Soon AT&T will find a way to limit our unlimited text message plans! Rather than receiving a text within minutes of sending it the recipient receives the text the following business day!
I was throttled at around 2gigs ten days into my billing cycle. Now my data is virtually useless for the remainder of my billing cycle. What's interesting is that I was out of town when my billing cycle started. Was out of town for a week came home and a few days later I was throttled. It wasn't like I had abused a particular tower because I travel a lot, not to mention I work in a different state than what I live in. AT&T has some nerve!
The reason upload isn't throttled is that it's not practical to control the rate of inbound packets (i.e. from the phone to the network). The only way to do it (refusing to acknowledge packets) causes resends, so ends up causing more data transfer. It's trivial to control the rate of outbound packets.
throttling wasnt that bad a few months ago either. before i would get throttled to about 1mbps and unthrottled was about 3-5mbps now its just un-useable. websites load slow. apps download slow. streaming is choppy. i dont have a contact atm with att so i will probably be looking for another provider that doesnt make your smart phone useless.
this video is right on the mark. before i would get the 5% user warning when i was using about 6-7gb of data now last month and this month i got the message again and i thought to myself, wtf i barley used 2gb. so i checked my data and surely enough i was at about 2.1gb and already getting the warning. and before with the speed test app , before a throttle my speeds would be around 3-4mbps. now i redid the speed test after throttle its down to 0.10mbps WTF ATT!! i cant even download anything now
I switched my att home internet bulls**t because it was as bad or even worst then the cellphone's internet. Now i have road runner and its fast. Supposedly i pay for 10mbp /down but i get 15 to 19mbp. Im happy with this service now. And it took me 45 minutes to finally disconnect stupid att!
When you did the maps comparisons, the throttled device had "Show Traffic" enabled while the other didn't. Would've liked to see how the throttled device compared with this feature turned off. Moral of the story though, throttled makes device pretty unusable.

@Miner49er0 Oh, believe me I know. I'm one of those users. I get threatened to be throttled at around 1300MB and then they throttle me at 2GB. Its crazy. Throttling after 5GB would be acceptable.
@appadvicedaily Wow! that's crazy, Thank god for Sprint being out there. i see that these are both at&t devices. What is the cap before throttling, 2GB or 4? if Its 4, you can almost live with it, if you wifi everywhere you can get a wifi connection. But that's a shame for us high bandwidth users. I need an unlimited data plan!
Throttling is a win win for AT&T. At first let's say the top 5% unlimited users used 12gbs per month. They get throttled and the following month(s) they use less for fear of getting a useless phone. So a few months later the new top 5% is using around 9gbs per month so they throttle them. Rinse and repeat.
The threshold is continually going down which is what AT&T wants. They are full of it if they give you a set threshold. It's continually going down.
Got my first and only text a few days ago. I'm sitting at a hair over 5gigs. I have about 11 more days till this cycle is over. Not throttled yet, bet they are waiting till 6gigs.
I've used 2GB of data this month and am being throttled. How does that even make sense? I could understand if I was using 5 or 6GB a month, but 2GB? Don't believe the AT&T lie that this is to help everyone have better speeds. I'm paying $30 a month for "unlimited" but being throttled after 2GB while other people are paying $30 for 3GB not throttled. It's not about improving speeds - it's about punishing those of us with unlimited plans.
@cedorris I spoke with an ATT customer service rep yesterday. She told me that they use a daily average of all Unlimited data plans which ended their billing cycle that day and if your usage is higher than the top 5% of that average they can throttle you. She also said they can throttle based on total data used in a billing period. You can be throttled on the first day of your billing cycle if you use a lot of data in a short time period or if you slowly use a constant amount over time
im getting throttled down on my iphone its bad but not super bad i get under 2Mb/1up when i was not i get around 5+MB down/3UP...this sucks it need to change
@thatonebeone Most likely that isn't throttled. You probably have a tower/network issue in your area. If you were throttled your upload would remain the same while your download would be 0.15Mbits.
@oneHellvalley ive notice and been testing sometimes i get 4MB down/2UP we just got 4G so i assume it helps but depends on area and time/location everything loads fast still no problem with pandora radio is what i use data like crazy..
Dude AT&T has made my speed so slow I can't even finish watching this video. I'm so pissed that AT&T is slowing my speed because I use too much data wtf that's why I got the unlimited data plan in the first place!!! Is anybody going to do anything about this? My speed is ridiculously slow it went from 3.4 to 0.8
- adjective 1. not limited; unrestricted; unconfined 2. boundless; infinite; vast 3. without any qualification or exception; unconditional
Look at the fist defined : UNRESTRICTED ! Refer to the third and back to the first ! If I want the entire chicken than damn it the definition clearly states the chicken is MINE!
@getjiggywithit who's taking the who chicken , wtf are you talking about I'm using my Unlimited Data as well as the Others whom still have this! I am already up to 6gb in 14 days because I use my phone at my job downloading all sorts PDF's for manuals on the go! on different frequency drives amongst all the other features of the phone ! The problem with people like you is you give up , give in , you let them win without a fight , and wait till you read or see a YouTube vid to down everyone wi
If you have this problem, call 1-800-331-0500, ask for tech support. Otherwise they connect you to a "special division" which they have made specifically for this issue where the people are rude/ghetto and will only let you cancel your service for $299. They will not stop until there are no more unlimited plan customers left; they will throttle you regardless if you use 2gb or 150mg of data.
AT&T is the worst... After 4 loyal years, I finally admit it. Don't update your contract with them.
Just this afternoon AT&T has changed it's data plans. They look awful for new customers, all Unlimited users 4days before your billing cycle Ends run whatever apps you can to burn AT&T they only throttle you towards the end of your billing cycle.
Haha all you people who are saying you have sprint... Why are you comparing your service to at&ts? Your download speeds are what at&ts is throttled! Seriously! you get what you pay for! Cheep service! so yea you have unlimited data whooptie-doo the month will be over by the time you've finally downloaded one app anyway. Besides this videos not about a data cap its about throttling because those users use the most data out of anyone. it's 5% that leaves 95% with full data speeds.
I have an iPhone 3G, and when I went to nytimes.com (everything in safari cleared) my iPhone 3G went faster than the throttled iPhone. It might be because of location, coverage, etc, but its something to think about..
In Argentina, only Personal have a plan with internet free, but the speedy (3mbps = 384KB) is limited to only 128kbps= 16KB when you consume 1GB of data on the month.
The companies who make the Devices should be Penalized Not the Users! AT&T, Verizon Ect. Needs to sit down with these SmartPhone Companies and tell them if We are going to sell your Product Your gonna Buy Us better Equipment so the Customer can take full Advantage of your Product Properly or Stop selling Smartphones all together and the cell Providers Should Stick to 10 Key Devices Since that's all they can handle with the Cellphone users Growing Daily !
What alot of cellphone users don't relies is that there are things eating data that they don't account for : streaming anything like YouTube consumes, push notifications, mail, locations services , carrierIQ, GPS, notification center, background apps, Siri! everyone attacks the big things like Netflicks and Pandora but it's the smaller ones that eat your Data up!
@h8ncars you people always blame the big corporations for your problems. blame all you want but at the end of the day, there exist to make PROFIT. when you sign up with them you're voting for their EXISTENCE. you don't like them? leave them. enough people do that and they will fail as a business. fight them? give me a break. do you make 100 billion a year? well they do. so good luck fighting them.
@getjiggywithit007 Some people are still in a 2 year contract. They could leave but they face the fact that they'll have to pay a ridiculously high termination fee. What we need is a group like Anonymous. If a group of hackers like Anon could take out the FBI website, a big corporation like AT&T is like stealing candy from a baby. Just because they're a corporation doesn't mean they can't be broken especially one that's well established in Internet society.
@getjiggywithit point blank you make no frigging sense , please define "unlimited" obviously at&t creates the account for one device and it not the same as you explain all my friends are not using there devices off my device ! AT&T should have held off creating new accounts and signing people on if the couldn't handle the load ! Im 14 days in my monthly contract and have easily used 6gb already!
@h8ncars I don't understand how you can reach 6GB in 14 days. there's wifi hotspots throughout the city for a reason. you use them when they're available. sure they promised you unlimited data but just because you CAN use it with no limit doesn't mean you SHOULD. that's like going into a buffet and taking the whole tray of chicken.
@getjiggywithit007 They put the whole tray of chicken out for a reason. For you to eat it. They don't make a buffet so you only eat one piece of that chicken hence why it's called "ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT". If you can eat a whole chicken, go right ahead. Same with data, if you're paying for unlimited why not be able to use an UNLIMITED amount of data? If ATT didn't want us to use unlimited data they should have removed that option completely and went with tiered data.
@getjiggywithit007 No. That's a terrible comparison. With a phone you have "Unlimited" so you don't have to worry about it. Food is much different and there's other people around in the buffet.
@getjiggywithit007 What are you even saying? You can't compare a cellular network to a buffet. The whole point for an unlimited package is so you don't have to worry about going over the limit.
Imagine At&t being a All You Can Eat Restaurant and all the Overweight people that come to eat Daily, get locked out from being served and have to oder from the slow side window after they become a 5% over-eater of the " All You Can EAT" ! AT&T is Discriminating and Punishing everyone they the send a text & email alert to , there is no way to Abuse Unlimited, regardless if it's not a purchasable plan anymore! When I contacted the BBB AT&T called me and asked me where in the contract does it s
100% true, a few ATT reps told me at 2GB's per cycle you're throttled in an "unlimited" plan. PS they throttle after 1 or 2 text messages 'warning' you, that day! And when i said how is that "unlimited" after a big pause, they can only answer with the "your data is still unlimited just slowed down" give me a fucking break. Slowing people down to below Edge speeds is not really having mobile data.
It's their way of putting customers in a corner to switch to a limited data plan, period.
Once you are throttled, are you throttled forever? Or is that just a monthly thing? If you cut down on data usage the month you get throttled do they un-throttle you next month?
A msg to att: thank you for making my new iphone 4s so useless by slowing down my unlimited data but i promises you at&t that i will use my super slow iphone internet just to leave negative comments about at&t and to support all those who are affected by this greedy ideas of your corporate people. Tomorro i'll cancel your stupid home internet service too. Have a horrible day at&t rats
I try to use my att home internet (wifi) in my 4s and guess what? I loss signal every 2 minutes. Called att complaing about it, 2 technicians have come ove to try to fix the problem and nothing. Changed modem, new cable installed at home, new filter new everything. Over $200 spent.. Still not working properly.
Somebody should do something about this. My iphone its pretty much useless now. Maybe starting a facebook page about it? If governments have collapsed by facebooking about it.. Why not this stupid company? We all paying for unlimited data.. Lets fight for it. Any ideas? Anyone?
AT&T sucks. Terrible customer service. Once you sign up, they treat you like a step child. Thankfully the t-Mobile deal was nuked, it would have hurt competition ..
I get throttled monthly I easily use 8gb of data on off peak hours in a month I am beyond p.o.ed I put a complaint into BBB! We get throttled to "EDGE" but the device still states we have a "3G" connection that is my biggest beef! The throttling is very displeasing! Att is punishing everyone for there mistake of thinking they were able to provide service!
2GB of data is nothing. Each HD Youtube video is 50Mb-300Mb each. So don't believe the carriers when they talk about 'excessive' data use. And AT&T is lucky I have WiFi at my house. The 3G usage is still at 6.1Gb for the month so far with 42.3Gb of data usage for WiFi.
@SaltMyCrackers they should cut your service. mobile data is not meant for you to abuse it. if there's wifi, USE IT. I don't care what network you're on. AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, whatever. There's a bandwidth limit on every network and it's you people who ruin it for everyone slowing shit down. Unlimited data on your plan doesn't mean you should abuse it. Do you go to an all you can eat buffet and take the whole tray too? Same idea.
Bandwidth limit? Unlimited abuse? You have no earthly idea about this subject and your thinking has been brainwashed to believe in the feces you just posted.
@SaltMyCrackers That's funny saying I have no idea about this subject because I happen to WORK in the telecom industry. Brainwashed? Ha! Try inviting 20 friends over, connect all your computers to your WiFi and stream Netflix all at the same time. See how long it takes to finish a movie and you get the idea. I'm not defending AT&T. I'm saying you people are complaining about a problem you created in the first place.
@getjiggywithit007 Did the standard customer come up with these powerful devices no so don't blame consumers for the problem it is the companies who make it and plus at&t provided these devices that eat up data so it's there fault they need to upgrade there data server to handle more load of data. This is why at&t ranks last in all major carriers.
@FragTestDummy Actually it is unlimited. They're not charging you overages and you're still able to access the internet through the network as much as you'd like. If your internet suddenly stopped working or if you were charged overages, then your comment would be accurate.
@MrEn5y How can you retroactively add throttling, a limit, to an unlimited plan and still call it unlimited? When I bought the plan in 2005, throttling wasn't part of the unlimited plan. When I renewed in April 2011 on a device purchase, throttling was not part of the unlimited plan. Throttling is something AT&T started after I was locked into a contract.
Would you like to lease a car and find later on that it's going to slow down to 10mph if you happen to drive to far in a month?
@FragTestDummy It would definitely not make me happy, but I could still drive that car as far as I wanted to. Lower speed ≠ Not unlimited. While the definition version, and breaking down the root of the word un - limited, imply that there are no restrictions, limits, or other restraints, telcomms advertise their unlimited plans in regards to how much you can use, not how fast you can use it.
So yes, you're slowed down, but you can still use as much as you'd like.
@MrEn5y I have a feeling that I'm really having a conversation with @ATT or one of its agents engaged in damage control trying to mitigate negative side-effects of the 2GB throttling plan. Good luck with that. No savvy consumer is going to accept a leased car that slows down if you drive it too far. They'll turn to the competition.
Enjoy your 10mph rate limited leased car. I've already moved onto another carrier. I encourage others to follow me. Vote with wallets, people.
@FragTestDummy Not far off; I used to work for them but quit for obvious reasons (lack of options and continual corporate greed). That fact of the matter is that the Terms and Conditions that you sign when starting service with them which applies regardless if you're in contract or not states that you understand they can change their service plans at any time and that you'll adhere to their acceptable use policy all of which is available at att.com and e-mailed to you.
@MrEn5y So, @ATT can do what they want because they had a lawyer put a clause in an agreement that says they can rewrite the agreement at any time for any reason without consulting the customer. Nice. I don't dispute that. They've already done it.
But, as a consumer, I don't need to do business with a company that treats its customers like that.
To anyone with a similar mindset: Find a new carrier and switch. Then, tell @ATT you've switched every time you get a chance.
@FragTestDummy In the ToS it actually states they'll advise you at least one billing cycle in advance, which they did. I ran out of room so I had to truncate the phrase. This is not corporate malpractice or misleading advertisement. This is how they intended their network to be used until a few (thousands) people started abusing it. Use Wi-Fi if it's available, and I can promise you that you can get through life without Netflix/Pandora or even YouTube on your phone.
@MrEn5y Aside from that, as you've stated vote with our wallet. If you don't like it, go somewhere else. In my circumstance, AT&T is the most affordable and best quality network in my area, so I'm not switching anytime soon. All I'm saying is a little education never hurt anyone; especially before crying wolf about lies and greed in the corporate world (not to say there isn't any).
@MrEn5y So, I should buy a fancy @ATT smart phone with an unlimited data plan and try my hardest not to use it. I guess I should use an insecure open wifi spot at the local starbucks and get my online identify stolen by anyone using firesheep. Yeah, that sounds like a great idea. Not.
Treat your customers like crap and see what happens.
I love it when @ATT gives me a chance to say: I switched carriers. So can you :) I paid the ETF to get out my contract. It was worth it.
Smh AT&T Board needs to be hung. They need to put more money into getting a better network than this throttle/data cap non sense. The consumers are the losers here.
I have a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket LTE and AT&T throttled me only after using 2GB even though I get unlimited data plan....with LTE speed I get around 20-25Mbps but after throttled I get 0.1Mbps....
its not the top 5% they are throttling, its anyone with 'unlimited data plan' and when they reach 2GB they throttle, which is stupid...they dont throttle people who have tiered plan and after they get over 2GB they just charge extra...they just want us out of the unlimited data plan....
@OtherVincentLee they just started to enforce the throttling starting November/December and from now on its 2GB, its even on the AT&T website....the top 5% is complete bs
@agentspy26 i still have unlimited, and last time i used 5 gb was in december during my vacation away from home, it is jan 17, still no text, and reasonable 3g speeds.
@OtherVincentLee well lucky for u then, last month was the first month i got throttled 12/17 - 1/16 and i checked my data usage and it just reached 2gb, i checked on att fourms and a lot people with unlimited data plan are complained gettin throttled after only 2gb
I'm being throttled and it really stinks. They could have just blocked me from using Netflix. That test was generous. I only get .01 mb downloads. Now I can't watch Netflix. I now go out of my waystream pandora or iheart when I don't need to use my phone.

You can only use 49.438GB in a month throttled if you're using 19kB/s
30days(24hrs/1day)(60min/1hr)(60sec/1min)(19kB/1s)(1MB/1024kB)(1GB/1024MB)=49.438GB
That is certainly not unlimited.

It's not about improving speeds - it's about punishing those of us with unlimited plans.
cedorris 1 month ago
@cedorris I spoke with an ATT customer service rep yesterday. She told me that they use a daily average of all Unlimited data plans which ended their billing cycle that day and if your usage is higher than the top 5% of that average they can throttle you. She also said they can throttle based on total data used in a billing period. You can be throttled on the first day of your billing cycle if you use a lot of data in a short time period or if you slowly use a constant amount over time

If you have this problem, call 1-800-331-0500, ask for tech support. They will not stop until there are no more unlimited plan customers left; they will throttle you regardless if you use 2gb or 150mg of data.
AT&T is the worst... After 4 loyal years, I finally admit it. Don't update your contract with them.

getjiggywithit007 1 month ago
@getjiggywithit007 Some people are still in a 2 year contract. They could leave but they face the fact that they'll have to pay a ridiculously high termination fee. What we need is a group like Anonymous. If a group of hackers like Anon could take out the FBI website, a big corporation like AT&T is like stealing candy from a baby. Just because they're a corporation doesn't mean they can't be broken especially one that's well established in Internet society.
wondercast 3 weeks ago
@getjiggywithit point blank you make no frigging sense , please define "unlimited" obviously at&t creates the account for one device and it not the same as you explain all my friends are not using there devices off my device ! h8ncars 1 month ago
@h8ncars I don't understand how you can reach 6GB in 14 days. there's wifi hotspots throughout the city for a reason. you use them when they're available. sure they promised you unlimited data but just because you CAN use it with no limit doesn't mean you SHOULD. that's like going into a buffet and taking the whole tray of chicken.
getjiggywithit007 1 month ago
@getjiggywithit007 I like the point you made about the buffet. That's one way of looking at this data throttling.
TheodoreMcFail 1 month ago
@getjiggywithit007 They put the whole tray of chicken out for a reason. For you to eat it. They don't make a buffet so you only eat one piece of that chicken hence why it's called "ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT". If you can eat a whole chicken, go right ahead. Same with data, if you're paying for unlimited why not be able to use an UNLIMITED amount of data? If ATT didn't want us to use unlimited data they should have removed that option completely and went with tiered data.
wondercast 3 weeks ago
@getjiggywithit007 No. That's a terrible comparison. With a phone you have "Unlimited" so you don't have to worry about it. Food is much different and there's other people around in the buffet.

SaltMyCrackers 1 month ago
@SaltMyCrackers they should cut your service. mobile data is not meant for you to abuse it. if there's wifi, USE IT. I don't care what network you're on. AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, whatever. There's a bandwidth limit on every network and it's you people who ruin it for everyone slowing shit down. Unlimited data on your plan doesn't mean you should abuse it. Do you go to an all you can eat buffet and take the whole tray too? Same idea.

I'm saying you people are complaining about a problem you created in the first place.
getjiggywithit007 1 month ago
@getjiggywithit007 Did the standard customer come up with these powerful devices no so don't blame consumers for the problem it is the companies who make it and plus at&t provided these devices that eat up data so it's there fault they need to upgrade there data server to handle more load of data. This is why at&t ranks last in all major carriers.

@FragTestDummy Actually it is unlimited. They're not charging you overages and you're still able to access the internet through the network as much as you'd like. If your internet suddenly stopped working or if you were charged overages, then your comment would be accurate.
MrEn5y 1 month ago
@MrEn5y How can you retroactively add throttling, a limit, to an unlimited plan and still call it unlimited? When I bought the plan in 2005, throttling wasn't part of the unlimited plan. When I renewed in April 2011 on a device purchase, throttling was not part of the unlimited plan. Throttling is something AT&T started after I was locked into a contract.
Would you like to lease a car and find later on that it's going to slow down to 10mph if you happen to drive to far in a month?
FragTestDummy 1 month ago
@FragTestDummy It would definitely not make me happy, but I could still drive that car as far as I wanted to. Lower speed ≠ Not unlimited. While the definition version, and breaking down the root of the word un - limited, imply that there are no restrictions, limits, or other restraints, telcomms advertise their unlimited plans in regards to how much you can use, not how fast you can use it.
So yes, you're slowed down, but you can still use as much as you'd like.
MrEn5y 1 month ago
@MrEn5y I have a feeling that I'm really having a conversation with @ATT or one of its agents engaged in damage control trying to mitigate negative side-effects of the 2GB throttling plan. Good luck with that. No savvy consumer is going to accept a leased car that slows down if you drive it too far. They'll turn to the competition.
Enjoy your 10mph rate limited leased car. I've already moved onto another carrier. I encourage others to follow me. Vote with wallets, people.
FragTestDummy 1 month ago
@FragTestDummy Not far off; I used to work for them but quit for obvious reasons (lack of options and continual corporate greed). That fact of the matter is that the Terms and Conditions that you sign when starting service with them which applies regardless if you're in contract or not states that you understand they can change their service plans at any time and that you'll adhere to their acceptable use policy all of which is available at att.com and e-mailed to you.
MrEn5y 1 month ago
@MrEn5y So, @ATT can do what they want because they had a lawyer put a clause in an agreement that says they can rewrite the agreement at any time for any reason without consulting the customer. Nice. I don't dispute that. They've already done it.
But, as a consumer, I don't need to do business with a company that treats its customers like that.
To anyone with a similar mindset: Find a new carrier and switch. Then, tell @ATT you've switched every time you get a chance.
FragTestDummy 1 month ago
@FragTestDummy In the ToS it actually states they'll advise you at least one billing cycle in advance, which they did. I ran out of room so I had to truncate the phrase. This is not corporate malpractice or misleading advertisement. This is how they intended their network to be used until a few (thousands) people started abusing it. Use Wi-Fi if it's available, and I can promise you that you can get through life without Netflix/Pandora or even YouTube on your phone.
MrEn5y 1 month ago
@MrEn5y Aside from that, as you've stated vote with our wallet. If you don't like it, go somewhere else. In my circumstance, AT&T is the most affordable and best quality network in my area, so I'm not switching anytime soon. All I'm saying is a little education never hurt anyone; especially before crying wolf about lies and greed in the corporate world (not to say there isn't any).
MrEn5y 1 month ago
@MrEn5y So, I should buy a fancy @ATT smart phone with an unlimited data plan and try my hardest not to use it. I guess I should use an insecure open wifi spot at the local starbucks and get my online identify stolen by anyone using firesheep. Yeah, that sounds like a great idea. Not.
Treat your customers like crap and see what happens.
I love it when @ATT gives me a chance to say: I switched carriers. So can you :) I paid the ETF to get out my contract. It was worth it.
