Perhaps his biggest mistake was his long hold-out....not only did he miss much needed practices during camp, but it KILLED him with the Redskin fans. He was suddenly not allowed any honeymoon, and angry fans demanded that he play great right away. Keep in mind that it had not been too many years since the Skins had been winning championships when Shuler decided to hold-out. Fans were incensed with his arrogance and felt he should have displayed gratitude for being drafted by the Skins.
As a Chicago Bears fan, I'll admit it, "I really didn't like Rex Grossman, all that much, but, after seeing him win the NFC Champion-Ship & going on to 'Super Bowl 41' during the 2006-2007 season, although the Bears lost, I had a much different opinion of him & started to take a little bit of a liking to him.".
Part of the problem was also that Shuler really stepped into a pile in '93. The Redskins were just starting what would end up being a 20+ year decline into mediocrity and irrelevance. Gibbs had just left (probably saw the writing on the wall), old man Cooke was obsessed with getting his new stadium built before he croaked instead of building the team, Pettibone ended up being a stopgap interim head coach with no long-term direction or authority, the vets were aging quick, etc.
@zyxwut321: Sorry, just looked it up & Shuler joined in 1994. By that point the team was even further in decline after 1993's collapse. It's kind of scary how quickly and completely the Redskins collapsed after the 1991 Super Bowl. I remember at the time as a kid feeling like that Super Bowl might have been the peak of the team since the veterans were getting old. Rypien never seemed to be the long-term answer even at the time. He just had a career year. Norv never did much in DC either though.
@TMGPREZ I know Shuler never went to a Superbowl, but if you think about it, he was borderline mediocrity. I mean he was a bad player, though he's probably a nice guy in real life.
@jww112093 You're out of your mind. How many Super Bowls did Shuler ever play in? How many years did Shuler last in the NFL? Rex Grossman certainly isn't a great QB, but my gosh he's a far, far better player than Shuler ever was and has actually had a career in the NFL. Any player at any position that can hang in the league as long as Grossman has gets a thumbs up in my book.
Shuler was a helluva QB! A team gets a high draft pick because they suck - the whole team. Amazes me that so-called knowledgable football fans expect a rookie 22 year old to come in and play like Joe Montana. And the Redskins fans screwed themselves out of good player by not allowing him to develope. Good job Redskins fans - you idiots!
Heath Shuler, Gus Frerotte, Brad Johnson, Jeff George, Tony Banks, Patrick Ramsey, Shane Matthews, Danny Wuerfell, Gibran Hamdan, Tim Hasselbeck, Mark Brunell, Jason Campbell, Todd Collins, Colt Brennan, Donovan McNabb, Rex Grossman, John Beck.
As the guy at 2:28 said, "They don't have a QB! They're losers!" Which pretty much explains the Washington Redskins since 1994.
@theloserof08 A big part of my family are Redskins fans and they always thought Trent Green was finally the answer after his '98 season. He threw for nearly 3,500 yards, 23 TD's and 11 INT's. I guess he rejected an offer from the Skins during the winter of '99 and signed with the Rams for more money (greedy athletes), but then got his knee blown out during the first pre-season game (bad karma perhaps, but also the birth of Kurt Warner). Anyways, Redskins definitely seem to have a QB curse.
it always hurts as a redskins fan to see a draft bust. At least we got someone good in kerrigan this year. Does it suck that we have rejects from the bears (rex) and dolphins (beck) now. yes. Hopefully we get someone good that is not like luck. Don't get me wrong luck looks good but he is almost as popular as the #3 on this list
How do you think I feel?; I'm a Chicago Bears fan & we got Cade McNown in 1999, I believe & he made Heath Shuler look like he was just recently drafted in 2008, or, something like that, from what I've been told.
I don't think Shuler & McNown are busts, personally, but, that's another story.
@darthjon247 college players don't stay within the number boundaries that the NFL uses. You'll see quarterbacks where numbers in the 20's and kickers were something like 99. Linebackers where anything between 30-50. Offensive and defensive linemen sometimes where numbers in the 80's.
I have seen Troy Aikman played football and Heath shuler shouldn't even being named in the same line as Troy Aikman.
Troy Aikman has three Superbowl rings, MVP of Superbowl 27 and one of the greatest to ever play the game. Also he was my hero growing and I'm just saying that I'm sure Heath was good in College but in the NFL he is not in the same league as Troy Aikman
I saw the first 2 preseasons games he was a really good scrambling QB then the 3rd preseason game came and i dont know why the skins would force him to be a pocket Qb
If I were an NFL head coach I'd have a rule where if a quarterback threw for 3 or 4 interceptions in a single game (definitely four for sure), I would bench him. Even if it was Joe Montana or Peyton Manning and I loved the guy or whatever, I'd tell him, "It just isn't your day, son. You haven't lost the starting job but I'm pulling you out for your own good. Just take a rest and we'll study the game film next practice." Something like that, anyway.
Funny you mention Joe Montana, because he actually did throw 3 INT's in that famous 1981 NFC Championship Game against the Cowboys. Had you been the coach, you would've benched him, "The Catch" would've never happened, the 49ers would've lost, and the 49ers dynasty may have never taken off.
@AllPro777 Didn't he also make a lot of good plays as well during that game? I meant if the guy was having a really terrible day. And maybe I should have clarified that that would be a tougher call to make in the playoffs. If your QB has been good enough to get you into the playoffs to begin with then you should probably stick with him in playoff games even if he's playing badly. The playoffs are kind of like an alternate universe since a loss eliminates you and all that.
As much as he struggled he still did have a moment. Saints were trailing 17-13 in the 4th quarter against Chicago. Shuler throws an 89 yard TD to eventually win the game 20-17.
A great talent wasted. Tim Couch got cut for the same reason. NFL offences are much more structured and less explosive when compared with the NCAA, so if your a rookie quarter that's been thrown directly into the pocket and has no time to learn and adjust to the NFL not to mention Defences are much more difficult to deal with in the NFL. Tom Brady wasn't a starter at first, won a Super Bowl as backup the next year
I never cared for Shuler as a player, but I have to give him credit for agreeing to appear on a show titled "Top 10 Draft Busts". That shows humility and character, which is in very short supply these days. However, his election to Congress confirms what some comedian once said about politics being a refuge for people who were complete screw ups in the private sector. That comedian was right.
@Archangel101576 how is he a complete screw up, he got picked 3rd overall. He had to be doing things right for a longtime to accomplish that. And he seems like a genuine person, not like a lot of the politicians in this country.
I don't know why Heath Shuler became a bust. He's a nice person, he never had any character issues. But for some reason, he kept turning the ball over. That's just heartbreaking.
the word bust shud be out sports cuz college is different from the pros look at reggie bush their are ppl still calling him a bust an he got a ring an i say guys like Barry Sanders an Dan Marino are busts cuz they dont have a ring just stats u see what saying get rid of the word bust .ITS A TEAM GAME
