Hello got a question so after the primer surfacer can the base coat be applied??

I am repainting my truck. I blasted the whole bed with a soda blaster and have some parts on it that need a little bodywork. What would be the best thing to put on the bare metal to keep it from rusting while im working on those parts?

@mxkx48 Epoxy primer would be the best primer for your truck. The best thing about epoxy, is that it is the only primer that body filler can be applied

@ButlerCollision i plan to go with a bc/cc system. Probably a cheap one since its my first paintjob and if i mess up it wont be expensive to repair. I will more than likely be using summit racing's paint. After i spray the epoxy and get the spots repaired, do i go straight to a primer surfacer r what? And would a urethane or acrylic urethane be the easier way to go for a beginner?

@mxkx48 Yes, once epoxy is sprayed, you can wait the recommended time (usually 30 minutes with most brands) and then shoot your surfacer. Anywhere you spray surfacer must be sanded. So after the surfacer is dry, block sand with 320, then 400-500 and you are ready to paint. I have a step-by-step guide for prepping a car you may be interested in. Is epoxy primer sandable and paintable?

@mixtecapitbullkennel Epoxy does not sand well. If you are going to sand, it is better to apply primer surfacer over the epoxy. You can paint on epoxy without sanding as well. However, it has to be within 72 hours with many epoxies. If you wait linger than 72 hours, you will need to give it a light scuff.

Go ahead and block it out and reprime. If the scratches are bad after priming you can also use glaze putty after sanded. Be sure to use guide coat before blocking. This will help identify your scratches and lows. Sometimes it take a few prime block and sand to get it right.

@Mr513phill . Yes, epoxy provides excellent corrosion protection and should be applies over bare metal. The you can apply 2k primer filler on top for build to fill sand scratches. There are other methods, but this is my preferred method.

@car0010 We are not spraying acrylic, it is a 2k urethane primer surfacer. Well, first we sprayed epoxy for corrosion protection and adhesion then we sprayed the primer surfacer.

@llaracuente hey not a paint guy but do know a bit about business. may be bit late but hey. basically work out how much materials u you used and work out how much that cost say £4 of materials then how long it took so say half hour of your time to sort it all out so charging at £30 an hour for labour(thats cheap were i live its like £50) so £19 and just round it up to £20 to make your life easy.

most shops dont do it this way and just rob people. (all prices are guesses on my part)
