Hey look, cultural imperialism at the top of the comments section!
Honestly, I can understand the impulse to say "you do not know how this is supposed to be done"; but at the same time, it's art, and there's no right way to do it. There's a right and a wrong way to practice an artistic tradition, but he's improvising and clearly claims to be doing so.
It's more insulting to Lao culture and people to be stereotyped with tradition by hidebound cultural conservatives.
You know, people all around the world are playing the guitar, and the piano, the flute and the trumpet, and so on. And they are seldom able to do it in the same style as an American or European player. But when they play a western instrument in their local style, we don't say they're doing it "wrong". They are just applying their culture to a foreign instrument. They shouldn't be surprised at all when an American wants to do the same with one of their instruments.
@LaoMusicOriginal Apparently, he can ;-) It is really too bad when a person feels so tied to tradition that he (or she) will not consider anything new. I think it is more "respectful" that he did not try to play a traditional Lao piece: he was demonstrating a wonderful Laoation instrument, not Laoation music.
@LaoMusicOriginal Completely idiot you are. You are a disgrace of however original musician you claimed yourself. Music is not belong to just one country but an asset of human civilization. Music is heart and art. People that have these two things can play music. Why don't you tell the rest of the world that you can play Khene pretty good since you were in the womb.
interesting to hear the speaker talk about the dynamics of the khene reeds and i their relationship to the finger holes.if the holes are not stopped the air flows over the reeds and out the finger hole thus not producing any sound. whoever figured this out all those years ago must have been a genius..!
met you at gm design a few yrs back but didnt know you played khaen,,, i used to play in stairwell there at lunchtime . best wishes just loaded many khaen videos

@LaoMusicOriginal Quote "When I play this style in Laos or Northeast Thailand it really strikes the people there as incredibly exotic."

Great sounds. I have no idea if that's how it's 'meant to be played' but it sounded great to me.

dude, you can't play the Khaen that good. The reason the music sounds good is because of the instrument, not the player!

if he was a woman you'd all be commenting on how disgustingly obese he is and not how much he's disrespecting Laotian music

That second instrument appeared on the film 300 when Leonidas and his men set out to war.

Even with the relatively low quality on this recording these instruments somehow resonate a really ancient sound, nice one Jaron.

@teleomorph Not a psycho. You obviously do not know anything about the khaen or Lao people.
LaoMusicOriginal 11 months ago
that was awesome. were you feeding that khaen through effects pedals?
XylenRoberts 11 months ago
Wow, it sure sounds beautiful through a ton of delay / reverb.
