Great advice! Very practical advice that many people don't think of. As an independent film producer, I think its extremely important for emerging filmmakers to think outside the box. It's what has gotten me where I am today. I love that through sites like YouTube and videos like this, information is so accessible to artists. Thanks for the video!
“Pick up a camera. Shoot something. No matter how small, no matter how cheesy, no matter whether your friends and your sister star in it. Put your name on it as director. Now you’re a director. Everything after that you’re just negotiating your budget and your fee.”
Such obvious advice, yet I'd never really thought of it like that. I figured that the film would have had to be good, professional, etc, but, you know, it makes sense that it wouldn't have to be. It just has to be...there!
nothing like 'expert village' vids for imparting specific detailed info! ".... just make sure you have a good camera with enough controls on it and all that....." Yes sirreeee buddy bobcat tail! I'm rushing to the store now to get my cam!
This guy.... I wont say anything offensive but you get the message.
"Use digital because everyone uses it - no one uses anything else anymore"?? - You mean everyone apart from all the top filmmakers and cinematographers on earth who use 35? Or RED?
this might be the least useful instructional video ever produced. Point 1: you need a camera to make a film. Point 2: your film will need sound. Thanks for nothing sport.
back in 08, and before that, most digital video cameras actually stored the footage on video tapes, i.e. the name DV, instead of hard drives or flash.

@ThisisPunk Its people who are partners on youtube can put advertisments into there videos to earn money. It's what makes youtube free so I'd stop moaning unless you want to pay to watch youtube videos.
Check out my indie videos sometime. Anyone in Louisiana, USA, would love to collaborate.

For a second there, I was like "TAPE stock? It's 2012 and you're talking in tapes?" I then noticed the "DV" logo. [facepalm]

@madman1128 no, it's like £4000 to buy a proffesional hd film camera. Unless you're going to use a holiday camera to shoot your film.

what is the difference between a grip handle and a Steadicam?. Which is better for me for short films? I have a Canon Vixia HG21.
Between Opteka X-GRIP and Manfrotto 585 ModoSteady? which do you recommend for short films?
