I always interpret this song as truly wild and fearful, the first nation kind of singing thing, and then near 2:20 when the music slowly becomes more twisted. At that point it's like when you find yourself lost and you're looking around in panic.

It was hard to keep tears when the Wild Things (especially Carol) bid Max farewell by howling, for in their howls you could hear the pain, the resignation and the knowledge that they will never see such a kind friend again.
