Nope. Magnetportal's largest N52 is 100x40 mm costing $400 (€300).
K&J Magnetics has a N52 in size 100x50 mm (4x2") costing $800 and a 4x4x2" block of N52 for $1000.
I haven't seen larger N52 magnets but the insanely high prizes probably limit the sizes.
A 150x50 mm like my one in the video has 77% more volume than a 4x4x2" so it probably would cost $1800 if K&J Magnetics should sell it in grade N52 :'(
@brainiac75 I see, 4" X 1.57" thats minuscule. But $400 is so so.
Still for a self running motor I have a hunch size matters. It's sad no one attempted to build an air battery the size of skyscraper but bit if there was one wouldn't it be cool to power 2 blocks with it? lol .
It you don't want the weight to make a dent in your table, it might be better to put the weight on the bottom of the table far from the magnet and to slide or roll it towards the magnet while it is already touching the table.
Oh, OK. Your talking about their 4x4x2" block (3.9 kg). It's only about 60% the size of a 6x2" disc (6.6 kg). But theirs is a grade N52 which is awesome for that size! But a prize of nearly 1200$... :(
What!?! Where do you have that info from? I've searched their website and can't find anything like that. Their custom magnets is even limited to max 4" (mine is 6").
A neo magnet 3 times the size showned in my video for eg 1500$ is a total bargain.
Yes - I have seen some videos where a 1 dollar bill is attracted to a magnet. I have just tested a danish 100 kroner and 500 kroner bill. They are also a little attracted because of the iron doped ink they use as an extra safety precaution to reveal counterfeit money.
I'm trying to order that huge magnet too on that website but I don't understand that language, nor did it say they ship to United States :( Yet I wonder if that would be illegal to have with me say if I was walking down the street with it to show someone, I'd definitely not want to carry that in my bmw lol.
Sorry - it's a german site and they don't ship to USA. Getting this thing on an aeroplane is very expensive in packaging... In Denmark it is totally legal - I don't know for USA. I think I saw a Mythbusters episode where they said you had to pass a test to legally handle large neodymium magnets? Anyone else knows about this?
Thank you for your suggestion. I have a lot of ideas for videos but only limited time to realize them. And I try keep my videos high quality = time consuming.
I do have a lot of different sizes of magnets and I guess I could make a interesting video comparing the lifting force of them. It's now on my 'future ideas' list :)
another nice video, I have recently purchased a 3inch x 1inch N45 disc magnet and cant believe the power. I can only imagine what this thing is capable of.
Okay if i were to place one earth magnets in my rectum and another in my mouth would they say? Meet in my stomach or would they go and get stuck in my small intestine........I must know ASAP!!!!!!! Dont ask why just give me an answer. Also should i use a prelubed condom as a precaution due to possible chemicals found on the surface of the magnet?
Sorry - they don't. Putting this on a plane for overseas shipment requires a huge and sturdy box with proper shielding. Shipping from Europe to USA would probably be as expensive as the magnet itself.
But for US and Canada there is a 6 x 2 inches disc magnet available on eBay: 800$ + shipping.
If i were to put that on a car making it go forward or backwards based on wich direction the force is aimed at, that would be equal to a really mean engine =D
I could be wrong, but if the actual car weighs just about 1300 kilo and the magnet can pull like 1000 kilos with some force losses, that would be just revolutionazing!
If you have another wheel attached with small magnets between two of those, the one end would repell and the other attract, kinda make sense doesn't it? :)
I had been thinking that if you ordered such a magnet, and it came in a small box, it would be very funny to try to watch the Post Man pull the box out of his truck.
One other interesting thing is to hang the magnet freely from its side via a rope and then watch it orient itself with the magnetic field of the earth. I'm assuming the weight of this magnet will dampen the effect a bit, but i would imagine it's still very obvious.
Some years ago, I saw on E-Bay, a NIB magnet that claimed it could lift 2000lb. They said every movement with the magnet had to be carefully planned. If you walked through a room with CRT tubes in it, they could go out, etc. Have not seen one this large since!
Ok. A few questions. Doesn't metal shit just fly through your house at that magnet? Like all the knives fly out of the drawers at you? Seriously though, what is range? How careful do you have to be when you walk around with it? What happens if it gets stuck on something or something on it? And finally, was there just like a big warning on the box in came in that said something like, "Do Not Take This Out of the Box! You assume all responsibility"?
Magnet force falls very fast with distance. At just 1 inch distance from the magnet the pull force is only about 1/4 of the pull force directly at the surface. Try KJ Magnetics calculator on their website (although with the magnet in the video it gives an overflow error :o)
I keep other large magnets at least 2 m (6.5 feet) from this magnet (but try to avoid them being unpacked and in the same room at all!).Very small metal objects can be as close as 1 feet without flying.
Moving this magnet takes planning. If it gets stuck to a large metal object (like a radiator) the magnet can't be removed without destroying it... Small objects are 'easily' removed from the magnet because they don't have much metal for the magnet to apply its force on.
Actually no warning on the box as that would scare the postman (see my new video to see the box it was delivered in). Hopefully people know what they are getting into if they are willing to pay for this magnet!
No offense, but how would you stop the ROUND metal weights from simply rolling towards the magnet and then being lifted towards the magnet itself?
It seems unreal, not that I'm callin you a liar, just that when I've dealt with magnets in the past, they seem to be unstable and annoying when presented with round surfaces and imperfect positioning
These weights are quite heavy. They are not gonna randomly roll around and fly through the air unless close to the magnet. I made sure that the weights approached the center of the magnet. This way they are not gonna roll towards the magnet but only be attracted to the magnet from the direction I chose. Gravity and the magnetization of the weights themselves also play a part in stabilizing the weights. No tricks here - just carefully planned science in the extremes :o)
Holy s**t! You're right. The price is now 899€. I bought this magnet with discount for around 290€ in january 2010!
Neodymium is a rare-earth element where China is the main 'manufacturer'. The government in China has imposed strategic materials controls on the element so my guess is that the price of neodymium has exploded. Everyone including me expected a rise in price but not this high for my part! I should have bought two or more...
I've just checked the price for neodymium on the website 'metal-pages':
~110 $/kg in january 2011
~410 $/kg mid june 2011)
My biggest magnet contains roughly 1.76 kg of neodymium so the value of the Nd in this single magnet alone is around 722$!!!
The total weight of neodymium in all of my magnets is estimated to be around 5 kg so I kinda hope this high price for Nd has come to stay... On the other hand I can't afford some new magnets :(
Maybe you know but "Neodymium magnets" are not pure Neodymium. They are Nd2Fe14B which is 2 parts Neodymium, 14 parts Iron and 1 part Boron. So your magnets are only 26.7 percent Neodymium by weight, and that is the maximum. In reality they are probably a little less than that, even N52 magnets are less.
I think you can safely bet the price will continue to go up. The demand is increasing and China is probably going to start exporting less of it or taxing it even more.
We are both kinda right :o) My biggest magnet in this video weighs around 6.6 kg so 26.7% is the 1.76 kg of neodymium I have theoretically calculated. It could be a little less as you mentioned.
My whole collection of neodymium magnets weighs over 20 kg or roughly 5 kg of neodymium.
In a big box magnetically 'shielded' with thin iron plates (in the same way as speakers with shielded magnets for use near CRT-screens). Not 100% shielded but enough for the post man to get it out of the van :o)
Just saw a picture of a guy who had his finger crushed by an N45 magnet. I'd love to play around with such a magnet, but the power of it scares me from purchasing one.
if you put this magnet on your chest, after some time (6hrs+) you would see large dark veins start to develop around the magnet, you would also feel very sick and tired. this is the magnet quite literally sucking the iron out of your blood!!
How do they keep the magnet from sticking to everything when they ship it? What if you decide you want two, so you can have them repel each other? How would they ship that hahaha XD
what is the point to a magnet that big? dont get me wrong i have my share of magnets as well for generators, bearings, and so on, but i just can not see a use for one that big. if i was making a turbine that big i would just use an electromagnet, so what do you use it for? once again dont get me wrong, because i want one now too!
The magnet have no practical purpose in my life. I'm just fascinated by science - the more extreme the better... Feeling the force of this magnet in real life is mind-boggling and actually an adrenaline rush!
I too have no idea what this magnet was intended for. Science labs also tend to use electromagnets when they need this kind of magnetic force.
@brainiac75 yeah i tried to find a true use for one that big and just couldnt hoped you had heard. and i saw in one of your comments something about feeling the magnetic force, i have to say one time i swear i felt it from an MRI, i eat a lot of meat, and when i give blood they do that iron test my blood sinks fast, meaning high iron, and i swear when i was getting an MRI that i felt a force very light and baerly there but man i swear i felt it. but thats a moveing magnetic field and much bigger
@1crazyfocker same reason as the female gender wanting to own the biggest diamond, the bling factor. At least for the guy, a monster magnet is still much less expensive than a monster size diamond stone.
I have had 8 inch diameter neo N40 disc magnets before and stacks of 6 inch x 4 inch x 1 inch thick magnets as well as my 4 inch pyramids. I also have this one and put up my video using it a couple of months ago.
What kind magnet is this, how is it different from a regular magnet, and how in the hell does such a small thing like that lift up such a large amount of weight. that's some freaky stuff.
@portugal82 Its a neodymium magnet. I assume a 'regular' magnet is a permanent magnet, if so its just stronger. It lifts up that much weight because the electromagnetic force is much MUCH stronger than gravitational force. You should look at the magnets CERN use, (google cern magnets)
@josiah32000 It was the same knife as the 'regular knife', the magnet was under the table, under the plate. So the magnet was attracting the knife so strongly to break the porcelain plate.
It is widely believed among scientists that permanent magnetic fields does not affect humans physiologically but I must admit that this magnet affects me psychologically: it scares me. I must be fully aware 100% of the time - otherwise I could get hurt by having fingers crushed etc. But other than that I can't feel the magnetic field affect my body at all.
I'm not gonna test that for sure :o) But no, it would not squeeze through my body because of the distance that my body would separate the magnet and a thick metal plate with. Magnets power decreases rapidly with distance. However I'm sure that it would still kill me because I wouldn't be able to breathe with my lungs being pressed between this magnet and a thick metal plate.
@brainiac75 heres an idea, what if you took two of those monsters, and attached every magnetic thing in your house to them? how much more of the magnetic field would be created? or, with the example above, if you took two of those things, and put one under your back (laying on it) and the other on your chest, would they go through then?
I don't live in USA so I have no experience with buying magnets in your country. The only one that I know off that comes close is the N45 6 x 1" from magnet4less. It's only half as thick as my magnet in this video but a bargain at $161.
Officially €349 or around $470 at todays currency rates but 10-20% discount is possible if you're a regular buyer like me. But magnetportal doesn't ship to USA (probably because it's nearly impossible or at least very expensive to ship this magnet by aeroplane).

@jackanakanory :

I'd love to play around with such a magnet, but the power of it scares me from purchasing one.

now what would happen if we are to push and pull it in a coil of wires....
luxollidd 10 months ago
if you put this magnet on your chest, after some time (6hrs+) you would see large dark veins start to develop around the magnet, you would also feel very sick and tired. this is the magnet quite literally sucking the iron out of your blood!!

1crazyfocker 11 months ago 2
@1crazyfocker:
The magnet have no practical purpose in my life. I'm just fascinated by science - the more extreme the better... Feeling the force of this magnet in real life is mind-boggling and actually an adrenaline rush!
I too have no idea what this magnet was intended for. Science labs also tend to use electromagnets when they need this kind of magnetic force.
brainiac75 11 months ago 3

At least for the guy, a monster magnet is still much less expensive than a monster size diamond stone.

oh, the iron that is bound to hemoglobin in the blood isn't magnetic.

What kind magnet is this, how is it different from a regular magnet, and how in the hell does such a small thing like that lift up such a large amount of weight. that's some freaky stuff.
portugal82 1 year ago
@portugal82 Its a neodymium magnet. I assume a 'regular' magnet is a permanent magnet, if so its just stronger. It lifts up that much weight because the electromagnetic force is much MUCH stronger than gravitational force. You should look at the magnets CERN use, (google cern magnets)

what's with the heavy knife??? I don't understand
josiah32000 1 year ago
@josiah32000 It was the same knife as the 'regular knife', the magnet was under the table, under the plate. So the magnet was attracting the knife so strongly to break the porcelain plate.
yourjefe 1 year ago
@yourjefe ohhhh ok. Thanks that makes so much more sense!

That magnet is disturbingly powerful. I would probably get rid of all small objects with iron in them in my house before even purchasing one.

i'm not going to, but if i was to get two of these and put one on a car and one on the garage door in front of the car, would the car get stuck?

now put two on each side of your hand to see if they stick :P

You should do another video and point a laser past the magnet and see if the light bends.
supergsx 1 year ago
Coool. They say that magnets can affect ius in weird ways. does it feel strange at all being around that thing?
helxig 1 year ago 2
@helxig :
It is widely believed among scientists that permanent magnetic fields does not affect humans physiologically but I must admit that this magnet affects me psychologically: it scares me. I must be fully aware 100% of the time - otherwise I could get hurt by having fingers crushed etc. But other than that I can't feel the magnetic field affect my body at all.
brainiac75 1 year ago 3
@brainiac75 If that thing was resting on your chest, and some metal was under your back, could that potentially go THROUGH your body?
riotpoliec 1 year ago 2
@riotpoliec :
I'm not gonna test that for sure :o) But no, it would not squeeze through my body because of the distance that my body would separate the magnet and a thick metal plate with. Magnets power decreases rapidly with distance. However I'm sure that it would still kill me because I wouldn't be able to breathe with my lungs being pressed between this magnet and a thick metal plate.
brainiac75 1 year ago 5
@brainiac75 heres an idea, what if you took two of those monsters, and attached every magnetic thing in your house to them? how much more of the magnetic field would be created? or, with the example above, if you took two of those things, and put one under your back (laying on it) and the other on your chest, would they go through then?
Shadowphix1000 11 months ago
@riotpoliec uh yes.. not sure if it would go through his body..
BUT it would cause some serious damage :c
Especially what part of the body the magnet is placed by.

strick1011 1 year ago
@strick1011 :
I don't live in USA so I have no experience with buying magnets in your country. The only one that I know off that comes close is the N45 6 x 1" from magnet4less. It's only half as thick as my magnet in this video but a bargain at $161.
brainiac75 1 year ago
@brainiac75 how much did this magnet coast in your country?
strick1011 1 year ago
@strick1011 :
Officially €349 or around $470 at todays currency rates but 10-20% discount is possible if you're a regular buyer like me. But magnetportal doesn't ship to USA (probably because it's nearly impossible or at least very expensive to ship this magnet by aeroplane).
