It's not so great for self defense, seeing as it is so large and due to heavy recoil, it's not so easy to line up the next shot. Double-tapping with a .50AE Desert Eagle Mark XIX will land your first shot, but your next will be way off. Better to have a Glock 19 Compact.
either way, the Desert Eagle .50 is very fun to range shoot with.

Funny vid, but I`ve always thought the .50 DE was kind of a novelty gun. I`ve never seen anyone shoot more than one round at a time, and the recoil kicks everyone`s ass, plus I dont think it really has any practical self defense use. But, if you want to be the badest MOFO at the range, I guess this is the way to go :-)

It could be used as an effective deterent. You gotta fire it inside, with no ear protection. The sound alone will make you crap your pants. Its not fun.
It's not a military handgun. It's designed for silhouette shooting and it works very well as a sidearm if you're hunting bear with black powder weapons-- just in case.
As a self-defense weapon, I'd prefer a .45. But at the same time, you open carry that monstrosity and no one will mess with you. And if you ever pull it, someone's going to shit their pants.
