Jimmy Rushing was born in 1899, according to the 1900 census, which helps explain his pleasantly archaic playing style. He was five years older than Pete Johnson, for instance. An interesting pianist to compare to Rushing is Freddie C. Washington, who was born in the 1880s and recorded "Lulu's Mood" with Zutty Singleton for Capitol in 1944.
Thanks for posting this TOP NOTCH video of the great Jimmy Rushing!!! I've listened to him over the years and never knew he played such great piano too!! I have a couple of albums with him and Buck Clayton and one with Oliver Nelson. This video is FANTASTIC and I am delighted to see it!!
What you mean chords? I only know the chords for guitar.. It's pretty easy, 12 bar blues, it's 4 measures Am, and then 2 Am 2 A, then 2 B7 and then Am and A. Done. :)
I loved this, he had a wonderful voice.

Never knew he played piano - wow! Could have had a night-club gig for as long as he wanted, and I would have been first in line every time.

Following careful thought and evaluation, I've decided my favorite two jazz vocalists are James Rushing and Jack Teagarden.
