  • very into this kind of thing but i dont like either of them, bear grylls is so unauthentic and doesnt try to teach anyone anything its more like a real life action film where we just watch him ramble about, whereas ray mears is such a joyless calvinist and so obssessed with not being too flashy that he eschews practicallity, like he wont take a big knife with him even though in a pinch it'll do prettymuch everything an axe and pocket knife can, but hipster ray cant be seen with a "rambo knife"

  • @ImEuanAndIGotsSkeelz Why use a big knife that can do 'pretty much everything' when you can have a smaller knife and an axe that can do everything? Especially when he's travelling with a crew. Hardly has to consider personal storage capacity.

  • @40622088 fair enough if you have a crew but most people go off on their own or with a mate and ray mears, being a teacher of sorts should consider that.

  • @ImEuanAndIGotsSkeelz Plenty of people out there do take a knife and a hatchet/axe in their pack. I'm not arguing that the big knife doesn't have its place, or that you can't use it to replace an axe and a smaller knife. Just that it comes down to personal preference.

I don't like big knives personally. I feel they're unnecessary, cumbersome, and more of a fashion statement for a lot of people. Would much rather have a survival/bushcraft knife and a hatchet in the bush.

  • @40622088 well each to their own but i think that some people, ray included, take an axe and small knife along as a fashion statement, to tell everyone that they are a genuine proffessional oldschool real woodsman and not a flashy rambo wannabe, personally i find a big knife handy, lighter, capable of doing all the other two can, funner to use and cheaper to buy too, i just get tired of being dismissed as an idiot for using one.

  • 3:25

home-made string, leather pouches.... and a gold watch?? lol

  • check the geezers watch...

  • did anyone notice the blood stained part of that wooden blade ray had :O

  • i can't manage to make cordage like this

  • "Amazing!" ? ... Really ? ... Here's a ball of string and a rubber band. ... Knock yourself out.

  • God, people are such fags.

Both men are good at what they do.

None of you are out there, so why you commenting?

  • Lots of the juice that comes from similar plants like that one are really itching when it comes in contact with the skin, like the agave we got here in Brazil! I dont know if it´s the case of the plant he used though.

  • This guy knows his stuff!

  • The best advice would be to combine Ray's and Bear's lessons and not just one or the other by themselves. Bear uses extreme survival techniques to get out of trouble very fast if you are fit and able and that is what you need to happen.

Ray uses a more sedate approach which lets be honest for most of us is probably more valuable because we arent mountain goats who can leap around like Bear does.

Never just have one teacher - Learn a lot and lose nothing - learn little and lose everything.

  • hahaha love the bushman's watch

  • It is coll how noone seems to know that that sack and a nut/ball sack Lol they use everthing.

  • I LOVE BUSHCRAFT CUZ EXTREME SURVIVAL TAKES THE PISS WID THE STORIES

  • Ray Mears teaches and gives demos to army recruits on how to survive in the wilderness, his knowledge of survival is outstanding. he has visited many tribes over the world to share, teach and learn Bushcraft.

  • Wow! An intelligent, non-sensationalist man who actually explains survival and bush-craft subjects with some detail and cultural context. Holy shit, you might actually learn something and not merely be entertained. Why don't we get this show in the States?

  • @hpd707 Probably because most Americans prefer pure entertainment, like that wanker Bear Grylls.

  • @hpd707 les stroud does it. or did it i dont think survivorman still comes on. but i think dual survival does a good job.

  • @mmantech I remember Les Stroud from years ago - the first guy on telly to show how to do bush survival. Ray did a prog on meeting him and you could see and hear the total respect he had for Les.

Dual Survival was ok but i think the producers left far too much out and went for theatrics instead of knowledge. I don't doubt those 2 have great skills but most of the time they were made to look like fumbling idiots.

    Peace

  • @RumbleGuts2112 they do have a lot of knowledge dave has a channel here on youtube visit it and see for yourself (wildernessoutfitters)-is his channel

  • @hpd707

You can order DVD's of his shows and his excellent books from his website raymears.com

I attended one of his lecture tours and it was fantastic, and his stories are very enetartaining he has IMHO the best bushcraft knowledge of any broadcaster/writer.

The other TV survival experts are just boy scouts compared to ray.

  • "Being on foot...it's SO different from being in a vehichle."

    Quote of the year.

  • ye, black man is preparing his journey because he is on his way to the UK like all the rest of them!

  • ray if yr wacthing this thank you fr the inspiration

  • just pop into Wickes

  • Comment removed

  • around £12.00 for a ray mears knife have a look at the RAY MEARS BUSHCRAFT WEBSITE :)

  • not alot of effort? bs

  • When he puts those fibres on the bush to dry at 2:19, I feel there should be a heroic 'swoosh' noise.

  • He missed a tip on making string this way, wear trousers so the string doesn't pull the hairs out of your legs lol

  • Ray Mears is a Delight!

  • I would like to point out that Bear's programs are based on escape and evasion, he always has an extraction point to get to and therefore takes risks you should never take in a real survival situation. Bushcraft is a much longer term philosophy. Both Ray and Bear have something to teach in the right context but unless you are a downed airforce pilot or a compromised special forces operative I would pay more attention to Ray Mears.

  • @warpedwoz Correct, Bear Grills is giving survival advice from a Military perspective. There's nothing wrong with that and there is certainly a time and need for that advice. However, Ray Mears offers a broader scope of survival based on first nations living and there are more times that his advice would be useful than Bear's advice.

  • Ray Mears. The real deal. Great videos.

  • Ray Mears is fat !!! I cant blame the fatter ones

  • btw u could just find a local knife maker and ask for what u want. same result

  • Insane Clown Posse tells us that long-necked giraffes are magic/miracles.

  • Ray is the David Attenburgh of bushcraft and survival knowledge. Nothing more to add. I like.

  • Nice, very similliar to harvesting Yucca in the southern sandy areas of the US.

  • A true British gentleman have a gun bearer, few seems to pay for the privilige nowadays tho... Ray is the man!

  • Bear and ray are not even comparable. Ray has an attitude which is all about respect, and gaining and sharing knowledge. Bear thinks he's james bond. Everytime he's on tv he goes on about being in the sas, and hes all about making exciting entertainment and being a hero. Ray is very honest about showing that the camera crew are there, and what supplies/support he has, because he's trying to give other people the knowledge to do it themselves whereas bear tries to keep that stuff hidden, hes fake

  • 1:35 thats what she said

  • i taught my daughter (13) how to make cordage from tree bark (one of rays other videos) and she was amazed to see string that didn't come from a store. great stuff, keep posting!

  • Actually, Bear Grylls is not liked in America.

Discovery Channel has the philosophy that with enough exposure, people will like the character.

Our TV viewer rating system is completely corrupt in America.

  • I think Bear is foolish. No doubt he could survive if he needed to, but his show is just to LOOK AT ME I EAT GROOS THINGS! I dont think there is much to be learnd from his program. Maybe thats just me though lol.

  • I am at least glad Man vs. Wild isn't promoting weapons, like so many shows now on Discovery.

  • your right that show gives you horrible info on how to survive unlike rays program which it full of info

  • Les Hiddins aka bush tucker man is a vietnam war veteran and he knows the ultimate edge of survival. Bush craft is only a tertiary skill. Finding water is primary, finding food is secondary, shelter is tertiary in regards to survival needs. The australian environmnt is very extreme.

  • In America we call it sistle thread. I can't believe he beat it like that, what a waist of energy. If you break off the point at the tip and just pull all the threads come out easy, and clean attached to the point. If you leave the point attached it can be used as a primitive needle and thread.

  • Yu miss a lot of the fibers unless you beat it. If you just pull the tip, you only get the centre fibers.

  • Ah, Thank you I learn something new everyday. It does not grow wild in NewEngland, but a American Indian friend of mine showed me how to get the threads because he new I was into bushcraft. I think it grows in the south west. A bromilade type of plant?

  • I am acctually from canada And I have never seen this plant in real life, but I have seen it on a lot of programs and in a lot of books. And I hear that is why you need to beat it. I cant say for sure. But it make scence to me :)

  • ray uses that same technique but this way you can get more fibers

  • This whole Bear vs Mears thing is retarded. One shows us extreme survival and the other shows us bushcraft, 2 completly different subjects.

  • The original knife costs £280 and has a 10 year waiting list or there's the new ray mears bushcraft knife at £250 or just buy a woodlore clone for half that price from a knife maker

  • Bear Grylls and Ray Mears is my idol

  • for me bear grylls is more exciting and fun to watch

  • That's because of his target audience. It's shown more in America, and for some reason their TV programmes always seem tobe hyped up and excited. Ray Mears is more knowledgeable and presents more like David Attenborough - less nonsense.

  • Agreed :)

  • 3:26 lol at the watch on his wrist!

  • That watch probably bought some lucky Brit an entire mountain.

  • @prickett233 hahaha yeah. you can't hunt and gather without a fancy time piece lol

  • @prickett233 That slice of bling is hilarious, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was a gift for participating in this sort of thing - a gift of a watch for us isn't much, for them is an invaluable tool.

  • @prickett233

good eye, he must do a little pimpin' on the side from his string making, LOL

  • @prickett233 hahahah!! didnt notice at first ! ahahha thats funnny

  • @prickett233 yea, simple bushcraft

  • ace

check out my vid of ray mears killing bambi lol

  • how much does it costs a ray mears knife ? ? please help and answer ? ?

  • alot.. couple of hundred

  • @eddiemate741 looks like he's making a fat load of cash off of his stuff ... is he jewish by any chance?

  • @eddiemate741 450 quid

  • if you want the Ray Mears signature knife it costs £250

  • @milotist a ray mears mora knife will only cost you £10.(when i got mine, that was its price). but you can see all of the items his company outlets at his website, just google it=]

  • @milotist

    £260

  • @milotist going on 220 quid now, and theres an 11 year wait list

get a clone or make your own

  • @milotist way too much, there are plenty of good knives for 1/8 of the cost. Just get a friggin Mora #2. You can beat the shit out of them and they won't break. Mors has had Moras that he's used incredibly hard for decades.

  • @milotist can visit raz mears web site and there zou can see the products in sell..

  • @milotist If you get a ray mears mora knife it will cost about 12

  • @milotist

buy a mora clipper or a mora buscraft, they're only between 10$ to 30$ and ray reccomends them

  • @milotist £275.00

  • @milotist the wait list is ten years. but their are plenty of others makers that make clones. A good but cheap starter is a Mora knife.

  • @milotist Ray has is own range of branded bushcraft products including educational literature. My mate bought one of his basic knife for about £30...it was VERY sharp and was great for basic bushcraft. But, like most things...the sky is the limit, all depends what you are willing to pay.

  • @milotist haha,... yeah,... the original is more than a houndred bucks...

just buy a mora frost s knife.... its what u want..... i think for about 20 bucks

  • @milotist it cost395 euros if you order it from woodlore but you can order the same knife just without his name from swc knifes for about 90 euros which is about $135

  • @milotist I got a Ray Mears Mora knife and it was only around 15 bucks

  • @milotist A Ray Mears knife is £350. Over 10 years waiting list because they are hand made.

  • @milotist get an enzo trapper, same design and just as good, and actually affordable

  • @milotist looks like a $15 Mora would compare.

  • @milotist 450 pounds

  • @milotist if you are still looking for rays knife .....he has a website..google ray mears bushcraft he sells most things he uses....knives , axes ,fire lighters ,video's. etc.....

ignore the lonely trolls, and there, shit talking comments...most people on YOUTUBE are OK..and happy to help.

  • Nice watch you got there Bushman, 3:26

  • ray is better than bear!!

    you have to love him.

  • well bear grylls and ray mears are both awesome in all honesty so lay of them

  • synthetic u fools lol

  • great vid! but his breathing annoys the crap out of me!

  • Chris McCandless should have listened to this guy...

  • If you were lost anywhere on this planet you'd want to be lost with ray. What a bloody nice knowledgeable bloke.

  • if you were with Ray you wouldn't even get lost

  • man made as opposed to what? neanderthal made?

  • machine made O_O? i guess

  • as opposed to something that occurs in nature.

  • i had a dream about ray last week.

i dreamt about going through a bushcraft course and he gave me his bushcraft knife, and flint, and showed how to make rope from birch bark. i woke up and cried until morning knowing how awesome he is.

    jk...

  • coolstorybro

  • The techniques here are so similar to making nettle cordage. Huzzah for transferrable skills!

  • ray mears is a champion....simple to understand.

  • Ray Mears....what a guy. A love watching his stuff, he really knows what he's talking about.

  • Public school boy?? Is that some kind of stupid british humor. What ever it was burn biotch

  • you can do the same thing with Yucca and Bear/ Razer Grass

  • ha ha i love the watch that guy at the end is wearin!!

  • lay off bear,he probably watched this cmn up and was inspired. if it was not 4 bear, i wouldn't of found out about mears

  • well i found Mears before bears, and there is difference between them: Ray wants to teach us something about survival, Bears just show how hes cool jumping around and eating gross things

  • I did not say what u found... I said I would not have found Mears if it wont 4 Bear.... Of course there is a difference between the two duhhhh.... Bear just has a differnt way of doing some things than Mears , I like Mears better also, If I was ever stranded, I will no what is safe 2 eat & how 2 get H20 because of Bear, I will know how 2 make a grt weapon & camp site because of Mears they both r very talented ,sexy, manly, men & we can learn from them Both ! So Stop hatn- from a chik n da hood

  • bear is crap though, yeh?

  • No I feel bear just has a diff style of doing things than mears. Mears way seems more effective cause he is taking his time and making sure it is right. But still give bear credit.... I mean he ate a live larva for gods sake!!! Thats sum crazy shit to do even if u r hungry

  • wow..yeh your right a larva...man that guys mental.....who would of thought he could actually eat something! ha ha ha! come on. hes just a wannabe

  • Bear teaches how to survive long enough to get rescued, Mears teaches you how to survive for a long period of time.

  • bear teaches you how to survive long enough until you can check in at your 4 star hotel

  • yeh your totally right!

  • @Shifticek bear is the man stfu

  • Comment removed

  • @Shifticek yeah, ray's got actual real knowledge, bears all show and guts. Rays practical. I recommend going to stagevu.com and watching his canadian adventures as well..... Mears is number 1 by far.

  • @Shifticek

I personally prefer Bears minimalism in his shows. Ray is always going to be great, but deifying one person and slanting the other seems a bit narrow minded. They're both pretty entertaining, and know what they're talking about.

  • @Shifticek Enough said there. your quite right.

  • this is similar to the agave

  • your wrong ironlung that was the best because it informs you as what is safe to eat

  • As a soldier I once trained in a country whose army's field uniform was made partly from fibres of this hemp. This uniform was issued to us and was surprisingly comfortable.

  • Yep Ray rules not that public schoolboy ;o)

  • i like ray mears but he shouldnt have done that series where he goes around eating plants with that creepy guy

  • I like the white men's name. "Mother in laws tongue", I like Ray Mears.

  • what in the fuck does this have to do with Gransfors Axes

  • Bear Gryllis is an fake.

  • I am planning to do one of his 'survival weeks' in england. So that i never run out of string:Phaha

  • Bear Grylls is a TOOL.

  • Hey, you leave the gorgeous one alone! ;D

  • So sexy.

  • is this man a legend.
