I was lucky enough to sit in on this project when it was still in development. This version of the opening sequence is a little different than I remember. The first sene that we got to see was of the Vesp miners at the refinery investigating something in a cave. Then it switched to the external with the marines. The team that worked on this were really nice and shared a lot of stuff with us. Funny stories about the first starcraft and production problems.

I think I read somewhere that Starcraft was originaly intended to be a Warhammer game but the deal didnt go throught or something so that is why you SEE simmilarities but they are far from being the same game.

The movie you're talking about was 1987 I believe, but never really inspired anything except more Dune movies. If you're into this kinda shit then give the book a read, you won't regret it.
