I never get tired of watching this video. You have to wonder whether Mitchell's hit to center could have been caught. The center fielder did not give it a shot
i was 17 in 1986 and the mets winning the world series is still the greatest sports moment in my life.that 86 team led by hernandez and carter was the best team that i ever saw.they just refused to lose that season.gary carter's death is so shocking to me even though he was really sick.you believed that the kid could beat anything.just like when he said i will not make the last out.that's the kind of man carter was, never quit and never say die.the world lost a great man.R.I.P. KID.
Obviously they didn't know who they were dealing with. Kid Carter was up next, and the rest was history! Carter, Mitchell, Knight, Wilson, Game 7, Trophy!
The Red Sox didn't lose because of Buckner you fuckheads. The Red Sox made several costly mistakes in Game 6 that all led to the Mets tying the game. Buckner was only one piece of this collapse.
I never get tired of watching this one. I remember exactly where I was at the time and how somber the mood was when Hernandez flied out. Everyone had their heads down. The series of events that followed was unbelievable. We all went from despair to sheer joy in a short period of time. I think Ray Knight's reaction when he approached home plate says it all. He had his hands on his head, implying - can you believe this?
Bill Bucker you peice of Shit!!! you owe me 3 grand i bet on that game! YOU HEAR ME FAGGOT YOU OWE ME! I HAD TO LIVE IN MY VAN FOR A MONTH BECAUSE OF YOU! god damnit Bill.....It wasnt a combination of things that lead to the lose, it was you. personally. Im going to piss on you one of these days, just like how you pissed on everyone else. YOU FUCKING DICKHEAD!!!!
the Red Sox have the possible biggest collapse in world series history and the biggest collapse in the end of the season complete my life as a Yankee fan/ anti Boston sports fan
It is hard to believe that it has been 25 years since the 1986 World Series. I always thought that Buckner got unfarily singled out for blame. What about everything that came before and after? There were the three base hits with two out as Schiraldi could not get that final out and then of course there was Stanley's wild pitch, which tied it. In Game 7, the Red Sox blew a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth and ultimately lost 8-5.
Quick question....why did you pick Miami 2017? Joel is a Yankees fan.....His full name is William (Billy) Martin Joel (Billy Martin was his favorite player). Thanks for posting, tho.
The clip is from "Last Play at Shea", so Joel picked it, not me. Billy Joel did the last concert at Shea Stadium (and sang the National Anthem before Game 6). If you're a Billy Joel & Met fan, pick up the DVD, it's excellent.
Not for anything but Bill Buckner could barely stand up straight by the end of that season. Never mind get down low enough to field that ball. Footage from that game alone shows him hobbling around in some serious pain courtesy of his busted kneecaps. I grew up in Flushing, a stones throw from Shea stadium... I will never forget that night, I witnessed a true miracle...
It always kills me when Sox fans want to blame Buckner for losing the series. What about the 4 plays before that? Give me a break!! If anything the pitcher should have had to have dealt with the loss as he gave up hits and threw a wild pitch.
Buck has been ridiculed by boston fans ever since the error.. His performance on Curb was that of an all-star! Hilarious!! Congrats to him and the writers of Curb for showing another side of Billy.. Funniest ep of the season!
When a player makes a play like that , they suck. I mean they are poor players and should be replaced. It was his job to field that ball and he failed to field that ball.
He sucks, but it isn't his fault that they lost the game. It was management's and coach's fault for playing him. With skills like that he should have never been allowed on the field.
@goatbucket Who gives a shit, it is just a baseball game. I will never understand people who take this shit too seriously and think a person should be blacklisted from society just because they made one mistake in one game that cost their team a game. Obviously, Bill Buckner was much better at baseball than you or you could of had a career in the MLB instead of being a whining washout who thinks he knows what it takes to be a pro baseball player.
All baseball players that field like Bill Buckner suck, just like him.
When they suck they suck. If you ever see a player error, its guaranteed that he will do it again, and at the worst possible time. He should have been replaced with a minor league want to be, who would have wanted to make the play, and not be a pussy, like Bill Buckner is.
@goatbucket i read the other comments. it seems like every feels as though you need to grow up. yet you think im the idiot? i just read four different comments that basically told you to get a fucking life. just like i told you!
I was in the Mets dugout (NYPD) during all of this. My best memory - besides praying the dugout would not collapse from the fan shaking - was when after Hernandez made his out - he passed by us - on his way to the locker room - and said to us "I hope you guys aren't going to kill me".
EVERYBODY BLAMES BILL BUCKNER...HE SHOULDNT HAVE BEEN IN THAT POSITION ANYWAY...IF THE REDSOX SHOULD HATE ANYONE IT SHOULD BE THE CLOSER FOR THE 3 STRAIGHT HITS N THE PAST BALL..THEY MIGHTVE LOST IN EXTRAS ANYWAY
@THE4BROTHER Buckner does indeed take a lot of heat but the Red Sox manager, John McNamara, deserves the blame for what he did in the final two games of the '86 World Series. He wanted to leave Buckner on the field for the final out but replacing him with Dave Stapleton was the more practical move. He also could have started Oil Can Boyd for Game 7 but put Schiraldi in after three days' rest.
Great video of a great moment in Mets history, but personally I prefer the Bob Murphy call over Vin Scully. Check it out as it is done by MartPositive. Also I agree w/SiriusMined about Mookie, I was at the game, and at that time I knew he would have been safe even if Buckner fielded the ball.
It was all Schiraldi's fault... he Lost game 6 and Game 7 for the Sox... Smh, But its cool. We got our 2 Rings in the 2000s... Ready for This 2011 Ring. Dont sweat it Buckner.
Great game. Even if Buckner had fielded the ball, he'd never have beaten Mookie to the bag. The pitcher was not covering first, and Buckner was slow. Look where Mookie is when Bucker reaches for the ball.
@SiriusMined The only reason Buckner was even @ first was because the Boston manager wanted him to be able to celebrate a World Series win on the field! And you're right.. Mookie was a speed demon and Buckner had 2 bad knees!
I never went from complete despair to utter joy over anything in sports so fast in my life. The greatest moment in Mets history with the magnificent Vin Scully on the call. Chills still go up and down my spine every time I hear that call.
If Buckner makes that play, Wilson's still safe at first due to Buckner's bad wheels and Wilson's speed. The on deck hitter was Howard Johnson, who NEVER got a hit in the post season despite winning a WS in each league. HOJO would be the last out of the NLCS two years later, TAKING STRIKE 3!
@erice495able actually it wasn't in memory of shea. it was because of all the homeruns he hit there against the mets. shea was still standing when he became a father.
@ThePass1967 You're insane. I'm a Mets fan and I have many emotional ties and memories at Shea Stadium and it will always have a place in my heart. But it was a dump. Citi Field is gorgeous.
If the Mets had not sucked their first three years in the new ballpark, you wouldn't have such negative feelings about it.
@terracottapie If the Mets have a record over 500 next year (which they probably will) people will start actually going to the park and not just complaining about it. And shea was NOT a dump, it wasn't very nice inside but the field was beautiful.
@vantageIIx But all baseball fields are beautiful (well except the turf ones). They're all basically identical -- grass and dirt.
The actual architecture of Shea was bland and boring, gray and drab. It was a cookie cutter stadium like all the other ones built in the 60s and 70s, for multi-sport usage. The trend back then wasn't for fan comfort or for aesthetics. Things have changed; now stadiums are like amusement parks.
That said, I still love Shea. Like your favorite ugly old aunt.
@terracottapie True, true. But I've been to Yankee Stadium, Camden, AT&T, RFK (which was a true dump) and Citizens Bank, and no place looked nicer to me than ol Shea.
Because of bill Buckner the red sox got to the world series. He was a great player.
