nope, there is no difference between a Violin and a Fiddle they are the same body, generaly fiddles are strung with steel strings and violins with synthetic catgut.

in irish traditional its called a fiddle not a violin

@MrShutupandskate I believe it's the size of the instrument that's what makes it a violin or a fiddle. Fiddles are technically a large viola.

Same girl recorded Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with RTE Concert Orchestra (second biggest orchestra in Ireland for those of you not from here!) a year or two ago, so yes she can do classical!

This is Mairead Hickey from Cork in Ireland. She does play classical and she is the Irish National Concert Young Musician Award holder for classical music in 2011. She has won All Ireland traditional fiddle several times.

What is amazing is where her mind is at. She isn't just staring at the wall. Her eyes may be open, and she may be looking at something, but I would bet her mind is focused on getting everything right, even if she isn't directly thinking about it.

I don't care where she's from, she's playing bluegrass. And I disagree that fiddlers can't do classical. I'll bet Aly Bain or Eileen Ivers can do both, they just chose not to. After all, a violin is just a fiddle that hasn't had beer spilled on it.

@XXxdeadXXangelxXX It really depends on style of playing.  She actually has good posture and looks classically trained. I'm classically trained but when I'm playing in a session, I tend to play with the scroll pointing almost to the floor and almost flat wristed so I can better hear the rest of the group.
