For the purpose of this series, he is just another mutant, but in the comics he is a human that gained powers from contact with the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak. Cyttorak is a demon that plays no other large part in Marvel stories.

He is the half brother of charles, and if first class was so accurate they would have shown the brotherly tension they had growing up. Especially how charles got bullied by him or how cain's father treated charles better than him, which tends to happen at the hands of an abusive father.
