Firing millions in missles against individual human targets in a mountainous region... it doesn't take a brainiac to figure this would fail.
The reason the action was opposed is because of the futility of the operation and the fact that any action as a whole was declined by Clinton on numerous occasions. A republic has constitututional limits to prevent the majority from violating individual rights. In many ways you could think of a Constitution protecting individual rights as the very line separating civilization from barbarism.

There are plenty of examples of where under Bush people who opposed the war or pointed out America's fault in the rise of the muhajideen were basically called terrorists, or offended in some other way (Jeremy Glick on O'Reilly's show anyone?). First off my simple minded friend.... Clinton NEVER sent troops to Afghanistan. He instead fired millions of dollars in cruise missiles at them and accomplished nothing. He did this only when the media attention on the Lewinsky and Whitewater scandals were getting too hot for him. There was not once troops sent. The reason the action was opposed is because of the futility of the operation and the fact that any action as a whole was declined by Clinton on numerous occasions. Where were you anti war people when we were sent to Somalia? Where were you when we were sent to Haiti? How about Bosnia? Support the war in Iraq means exactly that - you support the decision to go to war with another country, and support the reasons for doing do. You support the POLICY.
Support the TROOPS means you support the individuals who are deployed around the world to fight or protect.
In order to support the troops - you must analyze and criticize (if necessary) the policy to go to war, so they do not fight and die needlessly.

How does the left go against free speech? Well, there's the 'Fairness Doctrine,' to name just one example. Forcing free market broadcasters to adhere to a standard of "fairness" defined by the government is clearly fascistic... as if being free to broadcast whatever you like in terms of ideological content isn't the very epitome of fairness to begin with. Doing so is not only fair, it's a right guaranteed by our Constitution, not that the left gives a damn about that document.

As for Nazism, that word is slang for NSDAP, which is a German acronym for the words (when translated into English) National Socialist German Workers Party. Jackie you rock... We need to protect this country from the crazy people running it. I'm now afraid that my grandkids will grow up and never see the America I know and their great grandpa fought for. It hurts me to see so many willing to throw it away, so many that just don't know what a precious place we live in. And for our own leaders to call us Nazis for disagreeing, when they are old enough to remember what a real Nazi was like......disgusting behavior. They should be ashamed.

I'm sure when President Obama starts acting like a president that will one day end up on Mount Rushmore, people will stop complaining.
Until then, if people believe America is like a slowly sinking ship - not hard to believe - and they don't want to stand by and let it sink, you can hardly blame them for speaking out, DrHoldowicz. Maybe you are tired of dissent and want to wish it away. That's your business. But respect and tolerate the dissent of others. That's your duty.

Too true. I find myself arguing with idiots who never heard of the Community Re-investment Act ( Which was a major force in the mortgage crisis that caused this recession) or never heard of the so-called "Second Bill of Rights" which was FDR's assertion that Americans had a right to a good job, good health care and a good pension among other things. In other words he promised Prosperity as the right of everybody.
The networks do not educate at all.
They do not investigate.
They fail us.

That's true, and democracy is, in this context, just an electoral process - not a system of government. A democracy as a system of government is in essence nothing more than gang rule by consensus. A republic has constitututional limits to prevent the majority from violating individual rights. In many ways you could think of a Constitution protecting individual rights as the very line separating civilization from barbarism.

I'm sorry but what utter rubbish. There are plenty of examples of where under Bush people who opposed the war or pointed out America's fault in the rise of the muhajideen were basically called terrorists, or offended in some other way (Jeremy Glick on O'Reilly's show anyone?). The modern press is dependent on advertising revenue for the majority of their profits. Advertisers only want to be associated with successful, popular products so that is what drives news, not Obama, or Bush, or whoever.

Holding a poster has got nothing to do with democracy. Free speech/expression is an inalienable right, valid so long as it does not infringe upon others' property rights. Shutting down central London, for example, in order to conduct an impromptu thousands-strong street protest, is not free speech. Castro and his regime simply exercised their ability to use extreme force to jump to the end of what democracy will become, when the 'will' of the majority of voters, is to act as cleptocracy.

charlessmyth, holding a poster is a method of communicating an idea. Communicating an idea is a form free speech. Free speech is valid part of a democracy.

Free speech, a poster, for example, is a valid part of the democracy which permits it. The extent to which it is a valid part of US democracy, is contingent upon the 'will' of the majority of 40% of the electorate. The constitution and bill of rights have long ago been consigned to the dustbin of history and replaced via democracy, with the Federal government and its institutions. Ultimately, free speech depends on one's ability to self-defend it against those who would deny your right to it.

Yes, I think there will be an America then. As long as folks like us stand up and fight back at every possible opportunity, I think there are still more of us than there are of them. If we fail in 2010, I don't think we have a prayer.

Democracy is the antithesis of freedom. This is why more than 40% of Americans need to vote. Not because they stand to benefit from the zero-sum-game of: What's mine is not yours. But so that such an aspect of democracy will be less likely to prevail. The mainstream media have the right to refuse to propagate any item they choose not to propagate. Which is why we have Youtube and/or international possibilities such as France24's comments sections, etc. Oi.. les French :-)
