put a container or strainer there with the floss in there so the returning water runs through the floss to keep it clean and clear up the tank for you.
Here is a tip. Buy the smallest amount of 'filter floss' a fish store will have. It will help polish the water and get rid of the gravel dust in the water. You can rinse clean the filter floss and reuse it about 4-5 times before it starts to break up on you. I have heard of polyester filling at Walmart but be careful because it may contain anti-bac materials which will kill your fish/filter. Filter floss is cheap. I think the smallest is 1ft sheet. Put some stilts in the middle of the holes and
@PoohbearDX Thanks pooh. I got so fed up with the system that I just drained it and started all over anyway. Done this several times now actually. It's all part of the learning experience right? :0)
If you think perlite is bad. Try vermiculite. I did a perlite and verliculite mix once in my hydroponic setup. OMG.....the vermiculite turned into sludge after a while. Perlite while has it's downsides I used it in styrafoam cups and used gravel around the cups.
Yeah. I finally drained the whole system yesterday and spent several hours cleaning it out. REAL PITA. Anyway, been playing with some DWC which is producing some astounding results. My basil has tripled in size in 3 days and 2 of those days it wasn't even under grow lights! I am dreaming up a RDWC system to use for this out of folgers coffee canisters.
Note to self: Don't use perlite ever again. Whole tank got saturated with it while putting in net pots and rock wool . It's going to take me some time to clean this crap out of the system.

Recirculating Deep Water Culture. I want to try it using multiple cans and one fish tank for the nutrients.

yeah, I used perlite in an attempted aquaponics system last fall. I STILL haven't been able to get rid of all of it. I hate that stuff.

What is that white stuff on the gravel?

@ZombieGreaser501 : It is perlite. It's for starting the seeds more easily.
