Knowing a lil' something about CSNY, I will bet my bottom dollar that the message of that song is not simply "freedom is expensive". They invested A LOT of time protesting war in all forms.
Not entirely an accurate depiction. Although it was a very tragic event, one could do some research and find out what really happened that caused the ONG to fire Being there was an eye opener. There is a warning to responding to the clever skills of yellow jounalism with an agenda which is to show only sharp contrasts ie..innocent students getting shot by the big bad mean bully NGs. This is a typical ploy of yellow journalists. A lot goes on in between these images.
...moving stuff 4 sure; i heard on a recent BBC documentary about Neil Young how now near-iconic footage of the shooting of that 1st student percolated in his creative songwriters' mind until the song suddenly birthed = it figures....the power of images cannot be underestim8d, i don't think (aka the old adage 'a picture speaks a 1000 words' - + in this case, triggered a key song of that time which is still relevant 2day...)
No, some live and stock footage is from the practice field behind my dormatory....the soldiers aiming their guns toward the hill is footage from Kent State University, where it all happened. A candlelight vigil is still held there every year for the 4 students who died~

The song simply makes the statement that freedom is expensive. That cost is why so many people get upset when freedom is not respected.
