Perhaps you meant melodic minor? Some people hear Freygish modes in this way (fifth degree of the melodic minor), but they are few. Technically you could hear it either way (beginning note as tonic, or as dominant). Remember, since it's not a folk composition, it follows its own theater logic, and is in no way typical. Isn't Shalom Aleichem in harmonic minor, rather than Freygish? I always thought of Freygish as the "fifth mode" of harmonic minor. The melody to Shalom Aleichem does not begin on its tonic.
